Rathamanti & Don't-Be-Haten:

 Irish Gaellc,

I'm a fluent Gaeilgeoir. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.

There are some ancient Irish traditions about names. In Connemara where my grannys family are from traditionally people didnt go by their family surnames as there were so few surnames in the area and it was easy to get different families confused. Instead they went by their first name, fathers name, grandfathers name, great grandfathers name. My grannies name in English was Bridget Naughten but in Irish was Bríd Mhairtin Micheilin Eoin- Bridget daughter of Martin, Son of Little Michael, son of Eoin. (Making me Maitiu, Micheal, Brid, Mhartin). My grandfather didn't know this tradition so wrote her a love letter and it went through 9 different Bridget Naughtens before it reached the right one.

Might be interesting way to have marines ceremonial names- maybe it'd be Marine name, Marine from whom he got his geneseed, Marine from whom he got his geneseed.

Irish is a big passion of mine and I never thought I might get the chance to mix it with 40k.

The word for Inquisitor in Irish might be scrúdaitheoir (literally examiner) which pronounced phonetically is "Screw the Whore". If Gav Thorpe can have a character named "Erasmus Spooge" you should try that one.

Loving this so far. I've had my eye on these boys for a long time. I've been looking for a chapter to contrast with my Raptors and think the pale blue and white will contrast well with the dull green and black. Now I know the B&C's very own wordsmith is taking care of them, my decision is finalised!!!

Here's a mock up of 8th Company Captain O'Marcach.

Sorry for big image if a mod could put it in spoilers for me please, as I am tech inept.

Just remembered that the Irish word for "Fist" is Dorn.

Wow, nice one. Interesting  - it was a methaphor upon Dorn (Primarch) creation or simply it's a coincidence?

I imagine the Rogal part is a coincidence, although possibly not since the IF are kind of based of the Holy Roman and Prussian empires which did include Poland...there's no way Dorn meaning fist in Irish is a coincidence though.

I'd also really recommend the British Museum's Celts: Art and Identity book. It is an excellent series of essays, assembling some of the latest and best in Celtic scholarship, plus full of pretty objects.

Ordered, thanks, dude.

Petitioner's City

Ordered too, thanks. By the way really good tracks while reading Abercrombie or something Space Wolves or Ultramarines related.

Very happy to add to both your reading, it's a lovely book!

I think I will see a lot of glued lines from W40K/HH where :)

For really reals. I think its probably a coincidence.

"Cleaner" as in washes their hands before dinner?

Sorry, my English is terrible :) I don't know what else to call it. More straight types?

Apologies Brother I was just being daft. Your English is excellent, as are your Emperors Spears!

Maybe it's being too close to the language as a fellow irish person but the Raven Guard and Death Guard come across as much less intimidating for having 'gardaí' in their names.:tongue.:

Slua Dubh does come out as surprisingly badass though.

Oooh, have you considered some inspiration from the phoenicians/carthaginians? I hear there was recently a discovery of some early celtic texts... written in the phoenician alphabet (I think it was in portugal!) It seems to me that the phoenicians had very strong links with celts and greeks (and obviously the carthaginians and romans).

I'm only working with Google Translate, but maybe Caomhnóir instead? It's "guardian" rather than "guard", but it lacks the policing connotations.

Caomhnóir indeed. Thanks to Bowden and you I dived into Scottish and Irish epics and folklore
