So now that I have actually finished a few models, I wanted to share them with you. C&C are always welcome! :smile.:

Rubric Marines

As you can see I took the whole "Legion of Dust" theme quite literally. However, the inspiration for my dusty legionaries doesn't come from the "All is Dust" warcry etc but from a scene in one of the Ahriman books. In the book they destroy a planet by killing off all flora, thus leaving only dust and a starving population. After smashing aside the resistance, Ahriman leaves some Rubric Marines on the planet, which are getting covered by the sand and eventually buried under it. Years later Ahriman and his retinue return to the (rebuild) world and fight there once more. They awake the slumbering Rubrics and the enemy is shaking in their boots as sand bursts apart and green glowing eyes pierce through the shifting dust. That scene was so epic that I decided to replicate it for my army. Thus most of my minis will be covered with brown pigment as if they just rose from the sand. Notice however, that the Sorcerers aren't covered in sand (apart from their boots), since they weren't dormant under the ground, thus they aren't covered in sand.

Scarab Occult Terminators

Legion Contemptor Dreadnought

I regularly fight Orks and I got some old models from a buddy of mine. Seems like this Greenskin wasn't fast enough to evade the Contemptors grasp...

Maulerfiend

The tank is from the Hero Bases kit. Love my big Daemonsaurus!

Rhino

Sorry for the blur, my smartphone can't make sharp photos when the object is so close to it. :/

Blue Horrors

A selection of my Blue Horrors. Quick and dirty! Just basecoated them white and made everything else just with washes.

I still have a TON to paint. My pile of shame consists of:

30K Ahriman (painted, Disc of Tzeentch unpainted)

3x Exalted Sorcerers

1x Warpsmith

1x Maulerfiend

1x Heldrake

1x Forgeworld Predator

1x Rhino (mostly painted)

3x Chaos Spawn (converted from AoS Ghost Swarms)

1x Daemon Prince

some Cultists

1x Converted Sorcerer in Scarab Termi Armour w/ Power Fist

Thanks. :) Is there an Android Camera App that you could recommend?

I am playing around with the idea of using a TSons Chaos Warband. I love the Chosen models from the Dark Vengeance Box but they are probably too "chaosy". Has someone an idea which models I could use as a base to build some Thousand Sons Chosen from?

Small update. I've got my first Exalted Sorcerer done. The result:

I tried to take the "how to take a picture" advice to heart and edited the shot a bit to add back some colour contrast (the white light of my lamp makes the minis look "washed out" on the pics).

Next up I'll probably finish my second Rhino and start working on my other Maulerfiend and my Daemon Prince.

Very cool MoGuy.  I love that combo of bits and I love the warp flame coming off the hand... well done. Back pack flames are well done too. And you had the guts to put the book on the disk! I didn't. lol

I play a lot in different places so I was afraid of it snapping off, but now I wish I had done it.

Great job.

Thanks for the comments, guys! :)

@Prot: The warp flame on the hand is actually very easily done. Just basecoated it white and then washed it with Nihalite Oxide. I do all my flames that way. The flames on the shoulders are a gradual blend from Drakenhof Nightshade to Druchii Violet to Caronburg Crimson. The blend on the staff is also done with washes (Seraphim Sepia -> Fuegan Orange -> Caronburg Crimson).

Today I picked up two boxes of Raptors and the Shadowwar Armageddon box (yes, I was lucky enough to pre-order mine before it went out of stock :P). One box I assembled as Warp Talons and the other I converted a bit to "Rubric Raptors" with two Warpflamers:

I am amazed how well they actually blend in with all those spikey bits! I've shaved off a few here and there but overall left the original models untouched. Here's to hoping that jump infantry will be good again in 8th edition! ^^"

Aaaand done! Just finished the converted Raptors and wanted to share the results with you guys:

I played around with the gemstone colors a bit and ended up using it on the teeth of the chainblades. Looks good to me. Maybe I'll do the same for the power claws of the next Raptor Squad...

Anyway, let me know what you think of the results. Do you like the conversions?

Glad you like them! Sadly, I didn't have time to get a game in - yet! I might try out the Chaos Warband, as I don't have three Raptor squads yet for the Raptor Talon. Thinking about running them with a Chaos Lord with Jump Pack, two Maulerfiends and my trusty Scarab Occults with an Astral Sorcerer. All could move 12" each turn, which will put a lot of pressure on my opponent.

Got some games in and I tried out my new Raptors.

I took the Chaos Warband (since we can't take Raptors with the Grand Coven :(). I had a Lord with Fist, Claw, Astral Grimoire, MoT, 4++ and Jump Pack. I had some points to spare so he got gift of mutation. He got +1 wound and after killing Cypher he got +1 Attack. Mwahaha! His bodyguards were my Raptor Squad with 2 Flamers.

All in all my list was very fast. 2 Maulerfiends, 2x5 Raptors (Champs w/ Claws) and 5x Termis with Combi Bolters and Claw (Champ with Fist) that jumped up 12" via the Astral Grimoire. So pretty much everything could move 12". My opponent was under a lot of pressure from Turn 1 forward. He played Iron Warriors with Renegade Blobs. Game went on for 5 turns and ended with him conceding as I would have tabled him if we went on to turn 6.

The Raptors did very well! They pair up so nicely with a Maulerfiend as the big dino can mulch up tanks and the Raptors will cut through infantry.

I've converted my second Raptor squad with two Melters (Champ with Claws again). Hopefully Jump Infantry will be good again in 8th edition!

  • 4 weeks later...

With 8th edition coming up I am painting away at my grey pile of shame! This weekend I finished another squad of five Rubric Raptors. I also put together 2x5 Tartaros Termis from the Prospero Box that I got relatively cheap on eBay. One squad is almost finished, only need to base them properly. I've also finished working on my second Rhino with the Forgeworld doors and I am almost done with the Dragonfate Dias terrain piece.

Hope you like the results!

Haha, that artwork looks dope! Thanks for the kind words. ^^

Today I finished my first squad of Tartaros Termis. They are very refreshing to paint as they haven't got that much intricate golden trim to paint. I also "converted" some Combi-Flamers on them. The flamer-tip of the Champion's weapon is from the Aspiring Sorcerer's warpflame pistol. And the other Combi-Flamer was made by just glueing the tip of a normal warpflamer to the Combi-Bolter.

I also tried some freehands on their shoulderpads. I am really bad at those but I think this bunch came out quite okay. There's also loads of weathering on them. I gave them some scratches and used Agrax Earthshade to make it look like grime and rain was running down the scratches.

Eyes look good!

Friendly tip, dont be afraid to go back and clean up the lines or shapes of your freehand by putting down the base color over parts of it. With less trim and more open space on those 30k pads, its no trouble at all and really dont take long.

That yellow is magic, isnt it?

Thanks for the tips guys, I am already working hard on the next batch of Termis. :D

Normally I paint my Thousand Sons minis like Duncan does (paint the gold trim first, fill in the blue parts). The Tartaros Termis however, have so little trim that it is easier to just drybrush them blue entirely and then do the gold trim.

Small tip for making cheap basing: Get some all-purpose filler from the pound shop, mix it with a bit of PVA or wood glue. Add loads of sand and some stones for texture. I let my bases harden over night so I am not sure how long it takes for the filler to dry but about 1-2h should do it. I personally think it looks very good and depending on the grain of your sand/rocks you can even make your own "Armageddon Dust" texture paint etc. It's definitely cheaper than using the GW stuff and you can pretty much cover more than one army with a single tube of filler.
