Venator
This is the start of my Thousand Sons blog. The aim is to develop a large force which fits the fluff of the Thousand Sons, without comprising entirely of Sekhmet! I'm hoping to develop my skills and broaden the techniques I use. Before any of that though I need some advice on my test mini - what needs tweaking? I want a legion I can be proud of. Be brutal http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0493_zpscjuflifs.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0495_zps2q9uswgc.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0496_zpsccui9czf.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0494_zpsxzymjwlx.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/333278-venators-thousand-sons/ Share on other sites
codyrstuart
Very nice paint job! Too bad it must burn! Joking aside I don't really see anything I can nitpick about. I especially like the golden glyphs on the white bolter. Keep it up! Lord Marshal Ragnrok
that is quite possibly the most stunning paint job iv seen on those small small models. i mean look at that crimson Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/333278-venators-thousand-sons/#findComment-4723686 Share on other sites
Venator
Thanks for the encouragement guys! Do you think I should try and put weathering powders around his feet? I've got the FW powders and some Vallejo pigment fixer. I'm just worried it might be too much. Kierdale
Go for it, but just a bit. Less is more, and all that. Plus this is your test mini ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/333278-venators-thousand-sons/#findComment-4723717 Share on other sites
Lord Commander Eidolon
Very nice! I am nitpicking, I'd be very happy with an army of guys like that - just to offer some ways to improve! I'd probably try to push the shadows; I am assuming you've used an airbrush and transparent paints over a metallic base; so have the bottom corners of the shoulder pads darker than say the highest curve of the pad. I'd also have a pin wash around the knee pads and cabling. Top tip for the gold trim on the pads is the Agrax Gloss Wash, it makes everything so much easier, sticks to the recess! Absolutely weather the feet, it's fun (says he who doesn't allow his EC to get dirty!!) - certainly less is more, especially on the smarter legions! Venator
Cheers guys. I will try and push the shadows more on my next one as you have suggested Lord Commander and do a heavier pin wash. I shall have a go at using the powders tomorrow. I've just spent the last hour or so mocking up a base for a Contemptor. I've hacked up a Sicarin for rubble, and used some sculpey to make a smashed bas-relief with hieroglyphs. I've then put liquid green stuff down. Once thats dry, I will add sand, and stone chippings into the gaps before adding grass tufts and leaf litter. What do you think so far? About right? Or does the wall look naff? Its still very WIP and just a mock up at this stage.... http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/image1_zpsdgkgh5hq.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/image2_zpsr2lgde8p.jpg. Phatsquirre1
Wow, that Son is awesome. Great job. Personally, I like the base. It's cool, but not over-the-top like certain resin mins... Olis
Loving that cherry paint job on the Son, brother. That's got some real pop to it. :tu: I've hacked up a Sicarin for rubble, Wow. Words fail me. In a good way, of course. That's a ballsy move to chop up an eighty quid model for just a base... Knight of the Raven
Metallic red maximus-pattern Thousand Sons are truly the best-looking marines ever. You know, in case this comic didn't make it obvious. Wow. Words fail me. In a good way, of course. That's a ballsy move to chop up an eighty quid model for just a base... Yeah, cheap recasts from honorable, morally-irreproachable Chinese and Russian businessmen would probably be better for that kind of sacrifice. I've got the FW powders and some Vallejo pigment fixer. I'm just worried it might be too much. Dirt for the Dirt God!!! Seriously, you've created a beautifully colored and detailed legionnaire and your base is amazing. A bit of dirt will bring them together and give it a very realistic look. Can't wait to see the dread. This will be worth watching. Venator
Well, whilst I was waiting for the green stuff to dry, I've made some progress on a Sergeant for my first veteran squad. Without further ado - Veteran Sergeant Ahmos. He's armed with a plasma pistol, bolt pistol and power sword. I appreciate its not the most efficient load out, but I'm more interested in the rule of cool! He is not finished yet. It was my first go at using the airbrush to do a plasma glow as well. He still needs transfers and weathering powder. I thought I would get a few prepped before I start messing around with the powders.... http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0516_zpsymldjblt.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0517_zpssaowdzbm.jpg Plus one shot to show the shading. Hopefully it is better than on the test mini.... Lord Commander Eidolon
Lots of lovely contrast with the shadows! Very nice edge highlighting too! The first marine was good but the Sgt is a great improvement - great job on the white trim, I know how much of a pain that can be!! Venator
Only a little bit of progress thats worth showing this week. I used green stuff to make cobbles and some egyptian themed rubble. I also had a spare spartan door from my Death Guard lying around so I've used that as well. Still very WIP! What do you think of the cobbles and rubble - too much or just right?
