DuskRaider's 40K Nurgle - An Experiment in Flesh and Machine

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Some news (sans pics)...

The Knight is as converted as it's going to be and I've begun painting it. I did a few more things here and there but they'll have to wait and be seen post paint. I didn't have too much time with Halloween and all... the holiday is kind of a big deal at my house and we go all out every year.

Anyhow, the Kromlech Gatling Cannons arrived and I got word that the Den of Imagination Cannons will be shipping soon so I'll have to wait and see which ones I'll arm this bad boy with. I'm leaning toward the DoI ones, only because they're magnetized to switch to Battle Cannons as well and it's nice to have that option.

The Necromunda box has inspired me. I've also begun piecing together a Nurgle Cult for Necromunda (not sure if I'll ever play but why not?). A friend of mine picked up the Blood Bowl Nurgle's Rotters way back in the spring for me and I have yet to use them for anything... until now. I'll be mixing them with Cawdor bits and some other goodies to come up with something interesting.

Man, that latest WIP Knight is quite something! The concept of organic tissue tearing itself away from the metallic parts is a brilliant idea, and it's also an effect I have rarely seen tried on a model -- and never this well, to be sure! The whole thing has a wonderfully icky "The Thing"/"Akira"/"Virus" body horror vibe.

I wonder if the head could use some kind of disgusting touch -- maybe an organic eyeball instead of that aperture like sensor unit? It may sound corny, but I think it could really work if painted well.

Anyway, your Knight conversions never fail to amaze! Brilliant job! :)

Thanks, brother! It's coming along nicely, I've only the metal to do and then little odds and ends. Unfortunately I still haven't designed a base for it, but that's next. I want to get the model out of the way and fullfil my vow first.

As far as an eye... unfortunately, it's a bit too late for that. I did consider having flesh or claws coming out from underneath the carapace and reaching toward the head, but in the end I couldn't get a good mock-up, especially since I have the torso and carapace separate for painting purposes. Besides, with the body being so mutated, twisted and corrupt I wanted to keep the mechanical aspect in tact in some places. Even if I did do an eye, the general theme is glossy black and that's the same way I do my lenses, so it may not have really stood out all that much.

More good news. My Series 3 Space Marine Heroes have arrived! I get to paint more Death Guard! Such cool models, I can't wait to tackle them.

Affiliation: House Makabius / HelForge Volgan (formerly Forge World M'Pandex)

Designation: Exitium Malleo Hammer of Ruin

Pilot: Phenex Makabius, the Cursed One

Attendant Daemon: Euowuushfolccksksksanq'dugzrhilthlmmoeq'shyyaeoeossgzhhyymmyaeeussg'gi-

iowllrhaaebhulhlg'giaern'nuuduarq'aadaararphmmflaaph

Origin: HelForge Volgan

Notes: Frame Exitium Malleo is a rare example of an imperfect or rejected possession. Evidence suggests Volgan Idolators with Word Bearers' assistance have shackled the Greater Daemon to the frame, but true symbiosis has not been attained. Blasphemous creature has been seen attempting to escape it's prison and rumor is that the pilot has been in the process of being absorbed by the beast over the centuries. Has been reported to be unpredictable on the battlefield, attacking both Imperial and Makabius / Volgan elements in the midst of battle. This has earned both pilot and machine the moniker "Cursed One" and is given wide berth when at war. Engage with extreme caution.

Well... here it is. I was hoping to have it posted a few days ago but to say it's been a bad week is an understatement. Between my son breaking his hand, having to put my dog to sleep and my mother having a brain tumor removed it's been... trying. This is also why he's not mounted on a base. That will be my next project (along with the Series 3 Plague Marines).

I think overall it turned out well. If it looks as though the sable is brighter than usual, that's because it is. I began painting the model and realized I had run out of German Grey, so I substituted with the similar Deep Sea Blue. It's a slightly brighter, slightly bluer color. Overall I don't think it's bad to have it slightly different, especially since this Knight is uh... stricken.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome!

Sorry to hear about your family, that's rough. I'm my grandfathers caregiver he has alzheimers so I get it, it's tough to go through that stuff.

But on the topic of the HOLY  :cuss lol I saw the front I was like wow this is pretty crazy and then the back!!! Super cool idea with the pilot in there fused with the corruption, amazing work! Looks amazing man, the pilot is really neat. Just amazing painting and conversions!

Super job of completing another entirely unique knight. No small feat considering how many you've done already. Happy to be proved wrong about the fly legs they look great on the finished piece.

I like the toes on the back. The knight works as a big daemon engine facing the other way too which is very satisfying. You can imagine the Daemon taking over and walking backwards firing those guns the othere way.

Super tempted by those series 3 plague marines especially with Christmas come by up. Odd one that with the green bleed though.

Thanks bud! And hah! I hadn't really even noticed the backward image, that's pretty funny.

The fly legs were a gamble. I wanted the daemon to have outreaching appendages but I didn't want anything even vaguely humanoid as I felt it would ruin the whole "shapeless monstrosity" theme I wanted with it. Daemons themselves are a bit of a conundrum, they technically have no shape since they have no actual corporeal form and yet... here they are. So how would a Greater Daemon manifest that has been forcefully bound to something? From what I've read, even Daemons can go insane and I this thing would probably be the closest thing to a mentally ill Daemon.

Thanks!

Bit of an update (no photos, sorry!). The Series 3 Plague Marines are well on their way to completion. I'm having fun with these and went in a bit of a different direction with them, I guess. You'll see. They're not so different that they couldn't hit the field with my Death Guard proper, but I wanted to get a little more... I dunno, artistic with them? I guess.

The Knight's base is still unfinished. I still have to add rubble and mix / apply the spackle... so yeah, no progress on that. I should have it done before the end of Call of Chaos. Not that it matters, but I'd like to have both of my Knights based for the end of the event (to hell with the Leviathan).

Also, some cool news. Taro Modelmaker over on Etsy has made some Armiger upgrades including LasLocks so I picked up enough to make two dual wielding monstrosities in the near future. I think that may be the new direction I take with my House Makabius, Armiger variants. I do still have one more Despoiler to build but I'm waiting on parts... and the Knight itself. Should be interesting, though.

That knight is incredible. I love all the little unique touches you've added here and there. I can't wait to see what you've done with the series 3 plague marines.

Every time I read your updates and see the amazing things you've created, I feel a little tug from the Papa Nurgle within me to dust off my own collection and try to pick up where I left off.

Thank you for the constant inspiration.

Thanks, that means a lot to me. I hope you do pick them back up.

Well, some good news. I got my hands on another Knight. My friend had too many and doesn't know if he's actually going to start an Imperial Knight army or not (they've been sitting unassembled for close to two years), so he gave me one as a late birthday / early Christmas present. This will most likely be the last Questoris Knight I do for the foreseeable future, as this will make number 7 (praise the Undying God). Now I just need to get my claws on some Armigers.

I have full 360 images of each model, but I didn't feel like burdening you or myself with posting billion photos. I'll post my thoughts on these models a little while later, there's plenty to digest when it comes to these guys.

And while I'm at it, I finished these... oh jeez, I think before the ETL but I never got around to posting them. These are the Artel Ork Kommandos. I was hoping to field a Kill Team with these, but unfortunately their too few in number and way out of scale with GW Orks, so for now they're just... I don't know.
