NTaW's Thokt Dynasty

"The shifting void rifts of the Hyrakii Deeps hide the coreworlds of the Thokt Dynasty and their legions. Wreathed in sparking blue energy, the crystalline continent-tombs of the Thokt feed upon the power of the rifts, the sky overhead thick with rippling darkness and flickering blue comets. As their armies emerge from their stasis-crypts to bring death to their foes, dull metal skulls reflect the cold sapphire stars far above. Harnessing this potent radiation, the Thokt Crypteks have fashioned rad-receptors into the weaponry of their soldiers, a symptom of which is the shimmering azure light that emanates from their eyes, gauss flayers and even the cracks in their mechanical forms. When the Thokt gather for war, the barely contained power of the Hyrakii void rifts is ready to be unleashed upon their foes."

Boy oh boy am I stoked that B&C has opened its doors to (filthy) xenos content. I have about 1250 points of this army painted and just shy of 2500 assembled. My paint scheme is very simple by design, most of my time is spent painting the blue of their weaponry/icons/general glowiness. Here's a group shot of my Lord with some Warriors and my Scarab bases:

Next up, some of my converted models. First up here's a simple and easy Cryptek:

I've made two Heavy Destroyers using Stalker parts:

...and finally, my WIP Destroyer Lord. Of course, the moment after I glued his stupid custom arms onto his torso I found the Lychguard arms that were PERFECT for this application under my keyboard. D'oh.

That's all for now, hope you all enjoy! I'll be posting some more soon, my Overlord model, Cryptek, and HDs are needed for a game next week. If I can get them done I'll have a fully painted 1500 point army for the match; the biggest painted army I will have ever proudly* put on the table!

*since as a gamer of 20+ years I have definitely played painted armies of dubious quality in my early days

Thokt is my favorite Dynasty. Your painting skills are very good! While your conversion for the Heavy Destroyer is great, I wish GW would come up with a new design for the miniature. One giant arm and one regular arm is kind of silly and the model is dated. I would like to see them make destroyers and heavy destroyers look like Immortals fused to a hovering chariot in a similar fashion to the Command Barge, just on a smaller scale. Somewhere in between the Command Barge and the Tomb Blades in size. (Then again, I think Tomb Blades are the perfect replacements for Destroyers, they only lack armament options to be heavy support choices.)

Very well done on your painting though. I enjoyed looking at your army so far!

Good job thus far. The blue lighting effects on the weapons are well done.

Thanks! The good thing about this army is that there's lots of chances to practice my blue

I really wanted to do blueCrons and they are the bluest of Dynasties! It's nice to have a theme to go along with your painting I find. The Destroyers are a bit of a strange design for sure. I was really sad there wasn't something better for the Heavy Destroyers, which is partially what pushed me to want to make these models. Of course, now I kinda wish I had the weapons for my Stalker..

Here's where the Cryptek and Overlord are at for now. Whenever I figure out how to highlight the black I'll go back and do the whole army but for now everything's just getting a nuln wash for a slight shine.

Hopefully I'll get to those Heavy Destroyers and the death ray soon.

Colour scheme is great and your cryptec looks ace.

Thanks! It's about as simple as a colour scheme can get I'd wager, highlighting the blue aside.

I finished my Heavy Destroyers today, now all I have to paint is my death ray and I'll be good to go with 1500 points! I gotta say though it's not very satisfying putting a finished model on a clear base. I may go back and do their bases the same as the rest of the army, maybe leaving the post clear I don't know.

Beautiful colour gradient on the weapons, how do you do it?

Thank you! It's where basically all of the work on any model goes (though I do take a lot of care to get nice smooth black and silver as well). As for the blue, I do this:

1. I hit the area with Kantor blue.

2. Drybrush (I use a small brush so I don't have to go back and fix the black) almost all of it in the direction of the glow with Ice blue (current paints call this Lothern blue according to the internets). Layer drybrushing as it pleases the eye.

3. Drybrush again towards the brightest part with straight white (I'm using the old Skull white but white is white).

4. Paint pure white at the very brightest.

5. Carefully washing the whole thing with Guilliman glaze. I say carefully because I apply more on the darker side and less on the white side to tie my layers together.

That all make sense? Now that I look at it, it's a bit more work than I thought it was

Hey, thanks Tyriks. I use Xereus purple to base and layer/drybrush Genestealer purple, then edge highlight with white before giving it a wash with the old Leviathan purple (now called Druchii violet, though I feel like the washes work a little differently between generations). It gets a pretty heavy wash to tone the white down but it ends up looking, as you say, awesome :cool.: The warscythe got the same treatment minus the white.

Think I should do blue gems down his loincloth lookin' bit?

I had the whole army out last night before being packed away for tomorrow's game. Took a couple pictures:

I have since painted the bases of the Heavy Destroyers. Those clear bases were unsatisfying and different from everyone else's (cue 'one of us' chant).

This showcase is an excellent example of the Thokt Dynasty. You've achieved a lovely blue which is incredibly striking, well done!

I only have one small criticism and that is with regards to the basing scheme. Which in my opinion is too similar to the silver/dark scheme of the Necron models - it took me a while to realise that the bases had even been finished (however that could just be my tired eyes ).

How would I go about basing if they were my models? I'd look to go for a high-contrast complementary colour scheme. You already have the electric blue of the Thokt Dynasty so I'd balance that with a orange/brown/red basing scheme; think Mars! I think this would really take them to the next level and make 'em pop!

Feel free to ignore me though - they do look great either way!

Hey, thanks! I appreciate all comments and suggestions. I'm very bare bones when it comes to basing I want the focus to be on my models and I want the base to blend in with as many table tops as they can so the minis stand out as much as possible. The brown is quite distinct to my eyes but really washes out on my dining table that is also dark dark brown, do your tired eyes still see the same issue in this pic (that has a table flocked and the base is a bit more obvious)?

Really I did these bases almost as an afterthought so the models looked 'complete'. I build a lot of terrain as well and am currently revamping my table selection (out with the old, in with the new) and will very likely re-base all my armies to match them, which will very likely be themed off Baal so that martian redness may very well look perfect!

Ha! One Monolith is definitely on the way. I got given a hunk of plastic years ago that mostly resembled one (OK it is one, but hooooooooly smokes what a busted piece of :cuss) I just have to make it way worse before I can rebuild it; make it better. Short list on that project:

1. Simple Green bath for days.

2. Clean away the sad globs of glue, paint, and kneadatite.

3. Wrestle what I can back into position, clamp and glue. Everything else: bust it off.

4. Either rebuild or build up every corner to hide the terrible-ness that was its initial build.

5. Finish demolishing the four corner guns, make new ones out of...stuff.

6. Make new gem for top (likely a big blue sphere).

7. Make new eternity gate.

I'm sure there will be more things as I get going on it, but that's what I know I have to do off the top of my head. Gotta get some more of the table I'm also building out of the way though..I put it on pause to get this army to 1500 points and it's there, now I have to finish painting another fourteen 1'x1' tiles then I'm back on Crons I think. When I paint my other three Wraiths and do this Monolith I'll be at 2k with a small amount of options.

I could start the scarab farm back up (I definitely didn't buy all those Scarabs for my bases), but hoooooooo boy would there be a lot of Scarabs on that thing! I can think of one corner of the model that would have Scarab corner bead top to bottom

Ah! I mean in the game. Faced off against four FW Dreadnoughts and really struggled to put damage on them, figured the Stalker and its particle shredder combined with re-rolls would be a useful addition. I have now finished the black wash and most of the dark blue. Should be done in time for a rematch against the Alpha Legion.

Thanks, I was a little worried that my sparse theme for the army was going to look a little lacklustre on the bigger models but it's turned out ok. I found myself painting a couple things blue I might have rather painted silver so that there was colour from every angle. Necron Vehicles have a lot more interesting details than the Space Marine ones I'm used to painting
