gunnyogrady
From the Warhammer Community Page: "We also heard what the next three codexes will be following the release of Death Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus in September. Before the end of November, xenos fans will be pleased to see some of the galaxy’s alien races get their codexes for the new edition with Codex: Craftworlds and Codex: Tyranids, while Codex: Astra Militarum lets fans of the Imperium’s vast human armies create thematic armies from their favourite Regiment." I am literally so excited! How long have Astra Militarum players wanted them to bring back special rules for specific regiments?!? Do y'all even remember doctrines? I am so stoked! Also, I'm entering a spending freeze until we know what gets buffed and what gets knocked back down a few rungs. Do you guys think Scions and/orConscripts will see a price increase? Will Russes get a points reduction? Will our Baneblade variants gain the ability to move and fire without the -1 to hit? Will vets get the specialization rules they need? SO MUCH COULD HAPPEN. Lord Marshal
I'm just dreading all of the whining about Conscripts is going to see blanket nerfs across the board. I don't want Commissars or Orders to be made useless because because of one unit, or for them to be getting the wrong idea that "because one build is broken the whole army needs a nerf." WarriorFish
It's a confirmation of what we've known for a while, but in true GW style there's little for us to go on for now. We know we'll get some warlord traits, command point stratagems and regimental traits of course - essentially the missing character from the Index (and, arguably, recent codex treatments). I expect the regimental system to encompass what used to be doctrines so I'd hold your stoking until we find out more as I'm convinced we'll get anything beyond the existing chapter and legion style rules GW has done so far. I hope Scions are left alone, they're finally at a fairer price - perhaps the extra special weapons slots is a better idea to level them out a bit? Conscripts will certainly get something, an increase in cost sounds like a simple enough solution to me. Something to make Russes a bit more appealing would really help and I'm sure the Baneblade suffering a -1 was an oversight given other Super Heavies get it. I'm confident that the codex should be a solid improvement, GW has done well so far on them for the most part so there's no reason not to expect the same here. Prepare your regiments for glory comrades! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338994-new-codex-incoming/#findComment-4875838 Share on other sites
HenricusTyranicus
What I'm curious about is how regimental doctrines will work. Chapter tactics require all units to be from the same chapter. If guard get the same thing, word for word, that would mean separate detachments to take your commissars, scions, astropaths, tech priests, officers of the fleet, bullgryns and ratlings, masters of ordinance, priests, primaris and wyvern psykers. Even Valkyries? Not sure. Anyway, really hoping they change the rule around for us. Separate detachments for those things would be a pain. Tyr13
Im also kind of curious about how theyre going to differentiate the different regiments... and how many theyll include (cadians and catachans seem obvious, vostroyans and steel legion seem sort of reasonable as well... but what about mordians and valhallans? Praetorians?)I mean... theyre all humans. They dont really differ *that* much, and the ways they do differ might be hard to model in a chapter-tactics-esque rule... For instance, how do you make steel legion a great mechanised infantry regiment without making them completely dependent on chimeras (and possibly tauroxes)? None of the faction rules so far seem to have tried to pigeonhole a faction with a specific playstyle... I dunno. Im curious how theyre going to do it anyway. gunnyogrady
Yeah, I imagine it'll be Cadians, Catachans, and maybe one other with specific Regiment rules (Steel Legion is my guess, because all of the Armageddon love lately). And then there may be options for adding one or two orders or buffs to specific kinds of units in the spirit of Doctrines for folks who want to create their own, i.e. "All Fast Attack units with keyword <Regiment>..." etc etc etc. Dare we expect infantry platoons to come back? Maybe some kind of buff if you take units in a detachment that make up a platoon? Overall, some character and differentiation would be warmly welcomed. Halfpint100
I am thinking new orders per regiment. Also expecting a commissar rule change; maybe "reduce moral casualties by D6" Or not letting conscripts get orders, something like that to reduce the conscript spam Hoping for some russ improvements to make them viable Rest i am all happy with, though would LOVE some rough rider models Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338994-new-codex-incoming/#findComment-4876036 Share on other sites
Guardsman Bob
I have basically the same concerns as Lord Marshal and WarriorFish. A disturbing trend leading into sixth edition with Guard Codexes has been a habit nerf first, ignore what needs help second, then throw in the new models (units) you’re supposed to buy. 4th and early 5th codexes showed the developers put in some effort. I bailed this game in 6th when it was obvious they weren’t even trying anymore. It’s somewhat comforting that the game is so saturated with miniatures at least we have a chance they’ll put in serious balancing efforts this time around. If I see a later SM codex getting discounts on the same weapons we use again I am going to seriously “lose it”. As far as conscripts go, haven’t touched them this edition. Been super hyped that Infantry Squads don’t suck. It only took GW over twenty years to get here but they made it so we’re good. I’d be cool with GW removing Conscripts and bringing back Veterans to Troops. A point discount would be nice. Anything to keep GW from nuking the rest of the codex just because neck beards socially meta-gamed their cancer. My wish for Doctrines would be a return to 3rd, yet expanded. Potentially pay some points and get a few quirky rules. With the end goal of customizing our regiments to have similarities to the archetypes the 2nd edition Imperial Guard codex laid out. Hey GW! I still have my Last Chancers. Just say’n… Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338994-new-codex-incoming/#findComment-4876082 Share on other sites
Solar_Pattern
Just give me close order drill.... or any of the old doctrines.... in fact just give us the doctrines chart from the old guard book. gunnyogrady
Yeah, I just really hope they don't nerf Conscripts and Scions really hard as a knee jerk reaction to people making spam and min/max lists. A little rebalancing? Sure. Big nerf? I certainly hope not. And Guardsman Bob, I totally agree about the old doctrine system. Pay a little points to get a little buff on a per-unit basis. Simple, characterful, and easy to make work with keyword <Regiment> rules. MoK
Bring back Kasrkin. I can't stand the Scion Models or the Taurox. Both look fine for 30k Solar Imperialis, or as Inquisitorial Troops, but they really don't fit in with 40k Guard armies. Specific World/Regimental Storm Troopers would be awesome. Since I do Cadian Style Guard, Plastic Kasrkin would make me happy and also make m open my wallet for once. CoffeeGrunt
I'm hoping the Devildog and Russ get a little something. The former is a bit woeful due to low accuracy and shots, the latter just doesn't seem to do anything. I think it's a fundamental problem with how they've translated Blast Templates, though. On top of that, doctrines and maybe a discount on Valkyries would be welcome. Also Veterans as Troops. FallenSoldiers
The thing to remember is if this codex is supposed to be our November-ish. It was probably finalized around the time 8th was released. I don't think the "conscript spam" had been addressed before this was sent to the printer. I'd be shocked if there was much in the codex to address conscripts or commissars. I'd love to have a reason to take Russes again though! Something to make them viable. Morovir
It may not be anything, but in the Nethamus edition of the Regimental Standard, it marks out Conscripts as specifically wearing sub-flak armour, as opposed to the flak armour of the standard Guardsmen, and so conscripts may be changed to have a 6+ save in comparison to the standard 5+, as other units wearing sub-flak armour do. What would people think about this in comparison to other changes to Conscripts? FallenSoldiers
That would be fine with me. Puts them in line with cultists. They're only there to die anyway. CoffeeGrunt
It's not really worth taking, no. Not in my opinion, at least. Halfpint100
The vanquisher is the worst Russ varient. Will hit 2/3 times a game with its main gun and only d6 damage. Guardsman Bob
The proto-unit to Consctipts was the old Armageddon conscripted Gangers. They had no armor. A real god-send at the time. Tirak
Armor save debuff on Conscripts would be a great, fluffy balancing move. Hilarious to think they don't get issued adequate armor. Doesn't match fluff for a lot of conscripts. Between the Whiteshields and the conscript unit we see Dalin Criid serve as a part of in the Tanith books, Conscripts don't lack supplies, just training, something already reflected in their low leadership, BS and WS and inability to take equipment like Voxs, Heavy or Special Weapons. gunnyogrady
@Tirak that's a great point. Maybe a better debuff would just be a slight points increase? Or maybe, god forbid, we leave them alone and let the guard have a good fluffy unit? Because let's face it: Conscripts are good and useful, but they aren't 7th Ed Wraithknight status just yet. Also @CoffeeGrunt: Vets as Troops! PREACH.
