In two 8 Man Squads. Do 5-3 Neophytes, you’d rather have those 12 extra Points. Drop the 6 Man Razor Squad to 5 Man Save your 13 Points for 25 Points. Replace Relic Blade with Teeth of Terra getting another 21 for 46 Points. Add a Vangaurd Detachment. This bring you below 1500 in the second variation or give you 36 Points to spend in the latter. I’d recommend taking Cenos, just hang them in backfield or run or something (drop combat shield in the second last to do so). And in the first list replace Plasma with CombiFlamer and take CombiFlamer on other melee SBros. Leaving 15 Points to spend. If you could somehow scavenge another 13, I’d go full Plasma on the 5 Man Squads

The 8 man squads are being joined by characters in the transports. Razor squad is at 5 and will be accompanied by a character (for now).

I will take the ToT change under consideration (and probably use it, although my model bits are sadly not interchangeable). I have no Vanguard models or cenos. The two combi-weapons that I do have are already in the list (combi-melta on Marshal, combi-plasma on SB).

I am working to increase my heavy weapons loadouts but have reached a point where I have around twelve troops that need a variety of bits (backpacks, backs, legs, non-bolter weapon arms) before I can begin working on them. My ebay wish list is about a mile long and I have been looking at some of the third party bits makers and also have a list for those that is about the same length.

Can a head hurt a desk? I think mine just did. Either that or . . . why do I see stars?

Also, I completely misread that initial suggestion about the 5+3 set up.

I have one completed neophyte with a shotgun (all other scout type models are snipers). I have some IG which my buddy is cool with me using as proxy neos. I just have that condition (and still being a newb/noob/whatever) I fail to see the total possibilities available to me.

So, be back in a sec, gotta make some changes and readjust my eyes to see this stuff properly.

Let's try this again.

First off, many thanks to Schlitzaf basically having to baby step me through building my force for this game.

Had my second game this weekend. It did  not go well, however, I managed to learn a lot. I cannot really blame this game's bad luck on dice. It was all me. I had a field day with bad terrain placement and unit set up. Really bad. Also, I am calling this a "pseudo-batrep" because I did not write any of the info on the battle down, so I am going from memory.

His list:
Chapter Master
Deathwing Termies w/ TH and SS
Ravenwing Bike squad
Two five man veteran squads
Two TLLC razorbacks
Land Raider Crusader
Landspeeder Typhoon
(NO PRIMARIS!!!)

My list:
Marshal
Chaplain
EC
CC Squad 1
CC Squad 2
Shooty Squad 1
Shooty Squad 2
Apothecary
Company Champion
Assault Squad
Ven-Dread w/ TLLC
Pred Annihilator
Razorback w/ TLLC
Rhino
Rhino

As stated, I had horrible set up and did not use the terrain to my advantage. I was not keeping track of my objectives (first time using those). I completely forgot about my unmounted shooty squad in a building during T2 shooting phase. Forgot to use bolt pistols in my CC squads pretty much the whole time. Predator Annihilator died gruesomely during the second turn and it just kept getting worse. Essentually, my bad terrain and army placement combined with not changing my battle plan until it was too late doomed me from the start.

The game was still fun, I learned a lot, and got to hang with a good friend.

I severely need more anti-armor in my army and to better utilize terrain to my advantage.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself despite the outcome of the battle. I'd kind of love to see some Terminators in a quasi-anti-armour role: deep striking, shooting infantry with bolter fire and then charging in with their power and chainfists, but I realise that they're far from 'good'. Still, thematically they'd probably fit the list nicely. And they should still be a nice distraction unit.

The best part of the evening was that this is the same friend selling me his BT army and he brought it all with him to hand over. He was even cool with me still starting my payment plan with him next month. He just needed the space as his wife said he could not purchase anything more until he got what he did not want out of their house. With what I got from him, it basically doubled my BT crusade, but the majority of initiates are all shooty which still leaves me with quite the deficiency in close combat squads. Although, I found some old models this weekend that need to be stripped and will then be ready for a choppy load out. Other than that, my friend may have a bunch of bits (backs, legs, and backpacks) that he is willing to part with.

Things are looking up.

Which is why we all play more than one game in our lifetime. It takes a while to get familiar enough with your army, that you don't have to remember everything, you just know what to do.

Every game is an opportunity to learn something.

The game was still fun, I learned a lot, and got to hang with a good friend.

Most important point of all.

Honestly depending on your confidence and bits lying around you could cut some of older shooty ones to make melee bros

Until this weekend I had intended to keep those as shooty marines. Now, however, I do believe that I will be swapping out arms and making a decent sized company veteran squad. A few of the models will be held in reserve for special weapons.

Looks like it is time to separate bits again. I love this part.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I have been dealing with a personal dilemma when it comes to my crusade. I am just not a fan of the crusade badge that I created. The more I look at it the less and less I want to put it on my marines. I have created a new one that I feel will better represent my crusade.

I actually want to put this badge on my marines and, family permitting, I will start on that this weekend.

pale

When considering your crusade badge, a couple of things should be taken into account:

1. Does it scale, i.e if you shrink it enough to fit on an infantry figure will it still be recognizable?

2. Do you think you could paint it 100 times...on infantry figures? This plays into the "does it scale?" question, but also is it reproducible?

3. After looking at it for a month. do you still like it?

Short story:

Rewind six years. I was new to the BT. In fact, I didn't have an army yet and was looking at ETL 1 trying to decide whether or not to participate. Around that time the idea came out for a "community" crusade that everyone could participate in. It was a cool idea and it seemed like people were interested.

When it came time to design a crusade badge, we weren't really sure where to start. So we threw some mud on the wall and eventually settled on a design. I was the first person to jump onboard and put our new community crusade badge on something. As it turned out, I was the only person to put "our" badge on something. For various reasons, other people went off and did other things.

No big deal. I liked the name and the historical context of the crusade. I couldn't stand the crusade badge. It's not bad (white field with a red hourglass) and it fits Items #1 & #2 very well, but after a month...

Now, I paint other brother's  crusade badges on my guys to honor their efforts, but also so I don't have to paint mine as much. I suppose I could come up with a new one, but I never really found something that didn't look like other crusades. So now I mostly use the "Crusade of Wrath" badge (a BT forum event) that brother Acebeur came up with (white field, red cross, flames at bottom). It's pretty cool looking.

All that to say, if you want to change your badge, do it now while you're still settling things.

Cheers,

I will be waiting at least a month before I begin painting the new badge on anything. I have it set as my desktop background at work so I will be seeing it a lot.

Transfers are not something that I am comfortable trying out just yet. I am having a nightmare of a time getting a crusade banner to print in the proper scale instead of standard photo printing sizes.

Ouch.

It be could be worse friend, atleast you’ll get it eventually. Sense you have permission to buy one now

Eventually cannot come soon enough.

I ordered on through my FLGS this Saturday; it should be here by next Monday along with a 60mm base I need for the dreadnought I will be building for the Blood and Zeal Elite Week.

Gaming this weekend did not exactly go as expected. My ten year old daughter decided she wanted to get out of the house with me and head out to the FLGS. My buddy was cool enough to bring his IG army along for her to get a chance to play and see if she likes the game. It ended up being 500 points, her with IG verses me with BT.

IG:

2X 10 man infantry squads with flamers

2X Chimeras

1 Big, mean Leman Russ character tank (or something like that, it was Cadians)

BT:

1 shooty squad with lascannon

1 choppy squad

1 rhino

1 razorback

Long story short: My buddy helped my daughter. I went first and after my third turn I had to concede. If I had not, my daughter would have tabled me. Lascannon failed to hit on every shot.

My daughter is now hooked and I am trying to work in room in my gaming budget to by her some female guard conversion kits along with legs and arms for her first 10 woman squad.

Congratulations on gaining a gaming disciple. Did your daughter choose to play Astra Militarum for the advantages its tanks and artillery would bring?

More the fact that with conversion kits she can have females in her army. She really likes that idea. However, she did love the tanks. The future is going to be . . . interesting.

She could freehand some alluring pin-ups on the tanks? (Male or female, it's her choice.)

Someday. She has to finish the model car she is working on now before I buy her more models. Her painting skills have a long way to go, but I know she can do it.
