Working on my take on a chinork warkopta reimagined as a zeppelin/airship. Reason for this is simple, I think a helicopter flying next to triplanes is too advanced looking for the Luftwaaaagh. Plus in WWI there were a lot of zeppelin air raids, so it should fit the theme perfectly.

WIP of the gondola:

And two WIPs of the balloon itself, paper test 1:

Paper test 1 was weird looking, I really wanted six sections not five. Second test was better:

Much closer to the shape I was looking for.

Some foam, string, and glue later and we have ourselves a zeppelin!

Here is the base, made of Necromunda parts. I was going to use them for terrain projects, but they are such strong plastic they won't have trouble holding these guys up:

And here is the full model!

I am able to suspend troops/elites from the sides of the transport if I want too as well:

You can see the deffguns modelled into the sides of the gondola (one is a lascannon from a dreadnought  ) and the big shoota will be from a trukk gunner.

The zeppelin looks great next to the triplanes!

Super fun putting this guy together!

I saw the first paper mock-up of the Zeppelin and wasn't impressed, but the completed model is brilliant. Love it! :smile.:

Thanks! The paper mock-up was just a test, I didn't want to cut up a bunch of foam for it to be a disaster. Glad I did so, it saved me a lot of time in the long run.

The Hindenbork is looking pretty fantastic with its first black basecoat! :biggrin.:

Only thing I might fix later is add some kind of rocket engine on the back if I can find a good bit for it.

I am loving this thing so far, painting it is super fun!

That is really awesome, seeing the prototype and then the foam one gave a spark of hope for coolness but the paint on it now reveals it to be a massive win conversion!! The face is pure win :-)

The ork zeppelin is done! Going to be a great "chinork warkopta" conversion I think. Fluff for the Hindenbork (II) first:

The original Hindenbork airship was an unmitigated disaster. No sooner had the crazed mek-contraption taken off into the sky when it exploded into a tremendous fireball of scrap-metal and flammable gas. Had this been any other species of the 40K universe, the project would have been cancelled and airships would have been replaced by other, SAFER methods of transportation.

...the Orks meanwhile had the opposite reaction.

Convinced by their resounding success at greating a giant explosion (with the added potential for use as a fast-moving transport), the meks were quickly flooded with orders to create even more airships. Soon a second prototype was built and launched. Christened the Hindenbork II, the airship is now the pride and joy of the flyboz of the Luftwaaaagh!

Onto the piks. Here is the final version of the gondola and crew prior to gluing. Crewmembers are an ork trukk gunner along with a few gnoblars from the old WHF ogre line that I got as bits ages ago.

Here it is all assembled:

Next up, the zeppelin itself! Still got a bit to do on the base, but for all intents and purposes it is complete.

Loved painting all the little details and orky glyphs:

Kill countas etched into the side of the balloon!

From the back:

This last gobbo has a small converted rokkit to guard the back of the airship with:

As a bonus I also finished two rokkit boyz:

The nice thing about using the airship as a chinork warkopta is I can place up to three orks being transported on the sides and the rear of the ship; this should help remind me of what is being transported at the time!

Hope you enjoyed this project as much as I did, can't wait to make more! :biggrin.:

Agreed, awesome work overall but a nice finishing touch would be "rockets" on the back (orks would never use just one rocket :tongue.: )

I love how you can add some extra passengers to remind you what unit is inside   how often do we forget what trukk/rhino/wave serpent has what in it ?

great work and thanks for sharing with us.

Cheers, Mithril

++EDIT++

you could add some dish soap tops to the back as rocket engine exhausts... they would be quick to fit and most look like the back of an engine

Looks fantastic. Only thing I’d say, I think you mentioned adding a rocket exhaust to the back, I reckon that’d finish it off perfectly.

Great Idea. I was going to suggest the blades from a plastic Deff Kopta if it was possible to get hold of but some but some rocket boosters would also work.

Orky propellers are easy made out of plasticard too. If you got the engine from that trukk, slap that on the back with a giant propellor

I tried some leftover defkopta propellers but they didn't look so good, so I just took a bit I have lying around in the Maelstrom's Edge box and glued it to the back, works fine for now as I don't have any other trukk bits:

Also working on my next unit of burnas (very much WIP)!

gallery_103048_16519_288348.jpg

...and mocked up two regular orc tribals:

gallery_103048_16519_334744.jpg

Well done, that looks “rockety” Enuf !! Haha I think your tribals are super cute ! Like the Oompa Loompa with the mask from Charlie and the chocolate factory

Great stuff bud!

Cool conversion! What rules do you use to play it?

Hes running it as a "chinork warkopta" which has rules in the forgeworld xenos index. Its an 8 wound flying dedicated transport with a few gun and bomb options.

That is correct, and I am working on two more!

Also got a new "weird" boy in the works, along with the zeppelin crews:

gallery_103048_16519_78267.jpg

Awesome !!, bad moons and Evil suns look great, when they’re finished can we get a photo of the whole Flight of Zeppelins?

Your zeppelins are really well made, I bet there’s some Duardin..er dwarves out there that’d be mighty jealous !

Cheers, Mithril

Well done, I like these zeppelins. I was never fond of the Chinork model anyway.

And they’re a heck of a lot cheaper as well I’m pretty sure

Let’s him spend his saved cash on more gubbinz!

Smoke frog is quite the Mekanik... that must be his orky calling :laugh.:

They are definately a lot cheaper than the forgeworld option, just take a bigger investment in time and orkingenuity! :teehee:

I will definitely take some good pics of the army so far when these two zeppelins are done!
