How are you getting 8? Max RoF on a HB is 6 (7 with your squad mode ability) in the errata, you'd need to find an extra one some where...

Bolt shells are explosive and add an extra hit against Hordes ;)

Oath to The Emperor is a good call.  Not only is thematic - we serve The Throne above all, it helps some of us to hit like a lorry/truck/HGV.

MR.

I agree that out of the options it seems the Oath to the Emperor is mechanically the best for us. Though to be fair, I don't think our choice matters too much - I doubt it can screw you up too much. As Mazer says, I think that it's good in the sense that it can work with the Emperor uniting all the disparate brothers together.

I'm happy for the Oath to the Emperor to be selected. Dos, I have messaged you but in case you don't see it, what could be nice is for you to respond for Akkad's assertion that the squad should make oaths to you with something along the lines of, "don't swear an oath to me, let us swear an oath to the Emperor together."

Any general suggestions regarding the splitting of our group? Does it make sense to, for example, regroup both Devastators into one squad or should they be split between both squads?

Keep in mind that Vaidan will be leading one squad and Solastion the other.

Quick reminder of who's what:

  • Sabaan (Techmarine)
  • Solastion (Apothecary)
  • Akkad (Devastator)
  • Thorvald (Devastator)
  • Greysight (Tactical)
  • Vaidan (Tactical)
  • Atratus (Assault but also with a sniper rifle)
  • Tyber (Assault)
  • Vârvost (Assault)
Edited by Chaplain Dosjetka

So, unless we unbalance things, it gives a an even split centered around a heavy bolter with added tactical and assault elements.

It basically comes up to which group gets an NPC devastator and will our glorious WatchSergeant keep a close eye on Varvost or trust Solastion to keep things together.

Of course, we could put all the assault members in a demisquad led by our Apothecary...there are going to be in a world of hurt anyway...with the longer range tactical/devastator group covering their approach/ flanks

I'd suggest balanced Combat Squads too.

I regret I can add nothing further as I've always been the "opposition"... although from that lofty vantage point I will say if you specialised your groups I would take advantage of it. :p

Don't forget that everything we can do in-game, the enemy can do as well.

There is sound reasoning here, and at the same time, I can make the counter point, that two specialized units working in coordination can over power two balanced squads quickly... I would leave the decision to our Tactical Marine squad leader to make his choice, regardless of the potential outcome.

Agreed.  That's why we elected him...!  Good show with Tyber by the way Steel.  Akkad is warming to that lad.

Like I said, these groups are for a different task and may not reflect divisions on a battlefield. It might be worth thinking of it as 1+4+4 rather than 5+4.

This is the thing as well - I would be tempted to consult AT about freelancing Atratus and having two bricks of four, but I'm not in charge.  Thankfully ;)

Thanks MR!

I just wish google translate did a better job with going to Latin...

It should've been:

"To the Emperor I say; Thank you Grandfather for the strength of spirit to expand your Empire.

To the Lion I say; Thank you Father for the strength of body to expand the Empire of man."

Still it was close....

The Dragons don't really do the 'defend the empire' thing... more about expanding it.

I'm also trying to really highlight that the Dragons are very different from the Dark Angels, I know that in some places I give them a Black Templar feel, this will be very prominent should anyone start to ask Tyber about his (lack) experience in the field.

Squad division, as requested:

  • Vaidan (squad leader)

  • Solastion (team leader)
  • Vârvost
  • Tyber
  • Atratus

  • Sabaan (team leader)
  • Greysight
  • Akkad
  • Thorvald

D'you want me to RP any of this, Mol?

As Slips, Nineswords and Dosjetka have all mentioned they are writing posts I am holding off on updating. We are going to be fulfilling Xin Ceithan's request and having each half of the squad undertaking a training exercise. This is going to be our first taste of combat and where we see how the dice-based nature of DWRPG and the play-by-post nature of the game align. I have some plans in order to soothe things but I think there are several considerations -who rolls what dice, and when; how we ensure the game does not slow to a crawl waiting for one player to post; and how we handle interruptions such as the use of fate points. I think this will be a learning experience for us all!

I tried to mix aspects of the Novamarines' culture and Vaidan's own personal beliefs into my Oath to the Emperor, not sure how well it has worked.

I really like how our characters have their own Oath to say and don't all repeat the same one. Good call, Mol. :tu:

I am going to throw a quick post on too.  Very nice Dos, a warrior and philosopher ;)

If I may, I would suggest that each player roll their own dice for both actions and reactions, that way their posts have both agency and tension.  I myself will be looking forward to rolling good old real dice right here on my desk as I do not trust online cogitation without the correct incantations of Fortification of Chance and appropriate Martian Incense.

Either way Mol - you're going to be very busy!

MR.

I'll be using my own dice for this, too. Nothing replaces the feeling of collecting them into the cusp of your hand, shaking them about, and releasing them onto the table, eyes locked onto them in an unbreakable stare, trepidation and excitement filling your heart and mind.
