A question for the Deathwatch Hive Mind:

I'm looking at the Master of Blades distinction in Rites of Battle. It mentions a Marine selecting "Power Sword" and "Power Fist" and using those profiles interchangeably. It also mentions that you can use a different class of weapons, such as Force or Chain.

I'm considering the fact that I don't want Varvost to use anything other than a chain-axe. It fits his character, and transitioning to a power axe means losing the benefits of Flesh Render, for example. (I know some of you will mention dual-wielding, but I do like the Astartes archetype of pistol and melee weapon.) But there will come a time where this "tops out."

The issue is that I can only see the Chainsword as a chain weapon. Are there any others in the DW library? I'd hit upon the idea of allowing Varvost to count his chain-axe as a chainfist (It has tearing! Power field even fits, saying that he's cleaving through enemy weapons with his chain-axe!) but RAW it's an energy weapon rather than a chain one. And whilst I can just over-rule that (and might) I wondered if there are any other options?

There is a Space Wolf relic that's a Chainsword with a power field that uses the best of both weapon profiles, maybe something like that?

One that Atratus will later be picking up for power swords and lightning claws (because you can't carry a rifle and lightning claws at the same time). Actually if that happens in-play I should probably trade out his chainsword for the second power sword now while there is requisition free...

(unless paired 'honour blade' style swords are available - requisition 20 respected for two short blades, but locked away by the ultramarines)

Slips is right about the eviscerator. Emperor Protects lists it as 1d10+10 R, Pen 5, Tearing, Unbalanced (page 139)

Hey CM, as a thought, have you considered re-skinning the Frost Blade from pg. 167/168 from the core rules?

1d10+11 Pen 9 balanced, power field and tearing

I think with a little tweaking it could be just what you're looking for.

The only issue is that the Frost Blade requires a renown level of Hero - I think the Eviscerator is most likely what I'm looking for!

You might also consider borrowing the Castir chain greataxe profile from the Tome of Blood (HERESY!): 2D10+5 R, Pen 3, Felling (2), tearing, unwieldy.

I've gone and gobbled up all the left over Requisition, leaving Blackthorn at a cool 0 remaining.  Going to hammer a post this afternoon Friday with acquiring everything and finishing up a few conversations before the Kill-Teams ship out and the narrative moves on.

I have nothing to add with the discussion of re-fluffing weapons as I'm not so familiar with FFG's general stock of items, but I do enjoy the flexible approach to homebrew that's been on display lately. :teehee:

I know there is at least a Chainglaive thing in the Khorne Supplement for BC.

Since it already mentions several types of weapons (Force/ Power/ Chain) I fail to see why a (Chain-) Axe wouldn’t fall under the purview of a “ Master of Blades”

- especially if it already includes the use of a Powerfist?!

Surely that would lend itself to a rather different sort of fighting style?

I’d personally either just include the XXXX - Axe to just also be covered or go the way of a broad but more specific specialisation , e.g. Master of Blades (Chainweapon) or MoB (Force) to make it distinctive for the character at hand.

I've gone and gobbled up all the left over Requisition, leaving Blackthorn at a cool 0 remaining.

Cool. The path of the heavy bolter is a flexible but expensive one.

@Mol - would you mind if Atratus swapped his powersword/chainsword combo for a pair of short blades as per rites of battle (req 20, respected), or would you prefer he stuck with regular non-restricted gear?

Placeholder updated. Also put another placeholder for the armory visit.

I did update a couple things on my character sheet if it's alright CM. I didn't realize I already had scholastic lore (Codex Astartes) so I changed my purchase to scholastic lore (Cryptology). Also I used the 500xp refunded from forging the bond to purchase a WS characteristic advancement (Simple). Please let me know if this causes any issues.

All sounds good to me, Jeremy! Thank you for your engagement.

A.T.:

I'd be willing for you to have the paired power blades to replace both your chainswords. They have a single profile - how does that interact with multiple attacks and the like?

Secondly, I'd like these to have been sent to you by Master Issodon. Perhaps they belonged to the Scout Master that recommended Atratus into the Deathwatch. Perhaps he died during Badab? Fleshing out his links to his home Chapter seems like a good idea, to me. Let me know your thoughts!

Hey guys,

Absolutely slammed at work and non-work ATM so will be AFK for this for a few days (maybe until Tues/Weds).

Please feel free to use Achillion in your posts (would be nice to see him pop up here and there), he'll just provide assistance to Vorkys where required, will generally be snarky to anyone who suggests anything other than a frontal assault, and will be his usual mysterious self when it comes to anything to do with psychic shenanigans or the Warp.

I'll try my best to keep up in the few moments reprieve I get.

Peace

A.T.: They have a single profile - how does that interact with multiple attacks and the like?

They don't have the 'two handed' tag so they would work in the same way as lightning claws - two individual weapons with an added rule when wielded as a matched pair.

(if you were referring to the online 'master armoury' list their entry would appear to be incorrect there)

I will sort out a name for them and the background to post up as indicated - perhaps Atratus will be uncharacteristically late to the next gathering of Blackthorn...

We're all updated and held in place. It's a little brief but as I've said this part of the week is tight for me, so in the meantime Incariel will be in Blackthorn's training area awaiting the new set of trials Tyber is threatening us with.

Managed to find a little bit of time before my boy gets up for the day and I've got to get him ready for soccer (football to those of you outside of North America) and get everything set up for his party.
