Flying, Flyer Trait (12)

Jump Pack character can declare flight and fly for 12 metres per Round for one minute on "maximal burn".  The JP then needs to cool for one minute.  You must then land at the end of your turn.  Each Round lasts 5 seconds, giving you 144 metres total travel.  If you took your Solo mode Specialist ability on a Personal Pilot Test +0 Diff, you can extend this by 20 metres.  Extended Pilot tests may be asked for.

So max travel is 164 metres per minute, with a mandatory stop after one minute.  You will also have to declare an altitude change.  You can declare Run action, Fly, changing from Ground to Low Altitude, to High Altitude, which you'll need depending on the height of the tower....

Further, from my reading, I cannot find any limit to this, but suggestions on other forums suggest Flyer Trait (12) with the bracketed number being the actual limit to the number of times you can do it.

Thoughts?

Well the (12) for the jump pack is stated to be the movement speed only for flying, it also doesn't make the distinction if that movement speed is only for narrative time or structured time, my reading of suggests that it is like our movement speeds with 12 being a half move so to speak.

If I follow the movement tables on page 205 of the core rule book, using both structured and narrative speed and extrapolate them to a 12, it would suggest that our jump packs let us move 288m per minute when using the flight mode. still well with in our ability to reach the top of the tower.

Edit:

Doing some extra math, I'm not  sure being able to move 288m/min would be enough for us to actually fly as we would only be doing 4.8m/s (that's not even 20km/h), a far cry from the 14.4m/s we can get if we apply the run move condition in structured time.... if we were to expand it to 14.4m/s to a full minuet we'd get a movement of 864m/min (just over 51km/h)... Then again the movement numbers get a little wonky when you start looking at narrative time...

I see where you're coming from with that and sounds good, but I think it relies on the Trait itself, which gives a flight movement time, which seems to be universal over specific movement rates, suggesting that bigger/faster stuff have a fixed movement speed, Land Speeders or Eldar Nightwings have high flyer trait numbers...

I mean essentially, a Space Marine assaulter is a piano being pushed by a bottle rocket...so....

To expand on what you are saying MR, if I look at the stats for the Stormraven or Thunderhawk (page 183 RoB), their tactical speed is 30m or 30au a round, with top speeds of 3,000km/h or 1750km/h respectively... Like I said, numbers get wonky really fast for higher movement speeds.

Absolutely, it's the nuance of an abstract system.

Essentially thrashing it out gives Mol the options for decision.  That's what's important.  Good stuff mate.

Exactly, as I already said, in the end, CM is going to do what he feels is best and I'm okay with that.

As for the faulty Jump pack, well I figured that based on Tyber's size I have in mind, he was probably already pushing that thing into the high green low yellow zone for limits, adding in Vaidan likely pushed it into the high yellow to low red zone. That combined with the length of burns that we were using probably caused damage to the turbines... it just a little fluff thing, that to me makes everything feel more probable.

I'm not sure about the flight capability of Astartes Jump Packs. I certainly see them being used for short and powerful bursts - but flying ~50 floors in the air? That seems a lot, to me. I also perhaps see a distinction between vertical flight and horizontal "leaps" - I don't see the Space Marines as being anywhere near as nimble or capable in the air as (for example) the Eldar.

Either way, narratively I don't want the Assault Marines to be able to bypass the lower levels of the Astropath's tower. If we use the excuse that the packs are still not capable enough due to the orbital descent, I'm fine with that. Whatever is necessary!

Works for me CM, that's also why I tossed in the bit with Tyber's pack not working at 100%, to give you an excuse in the narrative, as well as fitting my own want/need for fluff to help with my buying into the story.

I'll try to bang out a post before I wrap up for the day at work, that works with the jump packs not letting us bypass the lower floors.

Oh Xin, you clever devil "he had not quite been himself" eh?

Well played, good update - well overdue.

AT, Atratus is really, really good :)

Very, very nice everyone!  I take my eye off this thread for two minutes: boom, the good stuff!

Deploying Wall of Words.

Or more to the point, reestablishing my linkage.

I send parts of it via phone to assemble it at home. Sadly I seem to have lost my last paragraph where Sabaan actually is in the presence of the nobles - so it is missing some musings there. I hope it just got delayed in the mail severs or else I will have to rewrite that entirely :(

But it feels good to be back written this!

I have contacted Nineswords and asked him to attempt to get at least a placeholder up. If I can get Mazer and Nineswords to post, I'm happy to move forward, and will attempt to do so on Friday (if not tonight.)

Done, My GM.

Well, as they say:

"Are you out of your mind?" --- "Yes. But it's not a recent thing." :)

Glad you like it. I actually borrowed the stamping of the "X" from the David Guymer books. It felt more ..techy.. than just itching a blessing in or a soft waxen seal.

I am putting a place holder up also, so I can put my limbo'ed observation paragraph in.

There now that my kids are in bed, I can share something funny with you lot....

This morning was my morning to get up with the kids, my boy was on the iPad while my three year old daughter sat beside me on the couch. Pretty normal for a Saturday morning... well this is where things get a little funny and weird...

Cass: Daddy My lil'pony!

SC: okay Cass, Equestrian Girls or Friend ship is magic?

Cass: Magic is her-e-say.

Now I know I've muttered that under my breath a couple of times when the theme song ends with friendship is magic, but I didn't think she was listening... honestly I've never been both more proud and frightened at the same time... this is the same 30 pound 3 foot tall kid that beats on her 44 pound 4 foot tall brother with baseball bats, hockey sticks and brooms...
