Jud's Ksy'm'yen Sept Hunter Cadre

Recommended Posts

I've been wanting to start a new force for a while now.
So with the rumours flying around about the new Tau codex I thought I'd take the plunge!
With that in mind I bought 2 start collecting boxes and a Hammerhead!
Now, I wanted to make them look like a modern (or near future) military, so I've gone with
a khaki scheme.
The guy below is my first Fire Warrior, I'm planning on doing them in a weathered gritty style.

I've chosen Ksy'm'yen as it's on the frontier and I doubt it'll have the sept specific rules, so I can pick

the rules that suit what I want to achieve (I'll have to see what I fancy once the codex drops)

I'll add some more pics as I get more done and I'll have lots more questions once the codex lands!

Here is the first Shas'la:
Next up will be the Hammerhead! (can't resist tanks!!)

Very cool first model. I dig it a lot!

I feel like for the modern army style you'll like the T'au Sept rules with their overlapping fields of fire stuff (first article on WarCom) and with Longstrike they have the best Hammerhead available as well. ;)

Thanks lads, really appreciate the warm welcome!

Cheers mithril, I'm sure I can live without cavalry! Though I do intend on building Kroot into my army! I like the idea of Special ops Stealth suits, will

think on that going forward.

sfPanzer, yeah I absolutely adore Tau tanks (part of the draw to them) so Longstrike is a must.

Finished the Hammerhead, again I've gone for a slightly weathered approach as I want to convey the impression of
the Cadre being out on campaign!
Thanks for all the replies, the codex goes up for preorder tomorrow so expect some swift progress!

This thread rocks    keep at it Jud!,very nice weathering there, the full force is going to look awesome on the table!!

So, were getting jungle green from Jud and sfPanzer, Titanfall theme from Triszin,Elmo's just churning out awesomeness(as usual)

i'm starting Vior'la, sorry guys for being boring white n grey (admittedly it's the only GW scheme that's ever resonated with me :happy.:)

looks like there's going to be heaps of new pics to look at very soon here on the T'AU forum

"My inspiration for the green scheme was the Marine forces in Avatar."  - you should try and get some of those new primaris Reiver's combat blades and use them on some of your troops as Avatar'esque bonding knives...didn't they have some stonking big combat knife in Avatar??...

Well I've finished my first squad of Fire Warriors!
I'm really enjoying working on the T'au. I'm really trying to keep them as neat as possible.
Rules wise I've decided to go with a T'au Sept for my Tenant
(5+ to hit on over watch) should give anyone charging them a nasty surprise!
Here they are:
Thanks for looking! Next up will be a squad of Crisis suits.

I'm thinking 2 Plasma and a Fusion Blaster or do you think I should just go with the2  Plasma?

I think Plasma rifles are the biggest trap in the Codex. They are just not worth it. Better take CIBs instead.

I'm also no fan of mixing weapons on Crisis Suits. They work best when you dedicate them to one task (tho the CIB is kind of an allrounder anyway). You don't want two things half dead. You want one thing dead-dead.

How so? I thought they looked pretty good!

I have 2 teams of 3 Suits, one team will have 2 Fusion blasters each, I was planning on running another team with the Plasma and Fusion.

My idea was for the Plasma/fusion team to hunt heavy Infantry and the fusion team to delete any vehicles.

What would you suggest? I haven’t built them yet but only have the parts that come in the set.

OnboardG1, green is the new black!!

Against regular Marines Plasma Rifles are better value, however you also need to be within 12" which brings you into easy charge range if you don't kill the target unit (enemy moves within 6" and only needs to roll a 5 to reach you) while with the CIB you can chill at 18" range (enemy moves within 12" and needs to roll a 11). If you stay out of Rapid fire range CIB is more cost efficient. Also 3 shots is more reliable than 2 shots which is very needed with our poor BS.

Against anything with more than 1 wound the CIB becomes more cost efficient (Primaris, Terminators, Tyranid Warriors, you name it). If you want something against light infantry (T3 Sv4+ or worse) then the Burst Cannon is more cost efficient and reliable than both PR and CIB.

Against vehicles (T7 Sv3+) the PR is even less cost efficient than BC. The CIB is here still just as cost efficient as a Fusion Blaster (without being in Melta range).

Against tough vehicles (T8 Sv2+) it's still the same as above between PR and CIB but there the FB finally pulls ahead.

So in summary:

vs MEQ: PR > CIB but at a much greater risk

vs multi-wound MEQ/TEQ: CIB > PR

vs GEQ: BC > CIB > PR

vs vehicles FB/CIB > BC > PR

Thanks!

Problem is getting hold of all those CIBs.

Your point is well made but like I say I can only work with what I have.

My main opponents are Sisters of Battle and Tyranids.

I want my Crisis Suits to deal with stuff my mass of str5 shots can’t take down.

Now, do you think 3 Fusion blasters would be better than 2 and a Support system?

Sorry but I don’t have the codex yet (though it is on order)

Yeah I know that problem. Sadly one GW still hasn't bothered with. Or even acknowledge. The only real options there are to get bitz from Red Dog Miniatures if you like that style and can play with 3rd party bitz in your FLGS ... or kitbash the hell out of other bitz.

Yes I generally think 3 weapons are better than 2 weapons + Support System unless you go for a utility Support System like EWO etc. (aka none that improve accuracy or AP since those all just result in more damage which an additional weapon does better).

Finished my first Crisis Suit of team C, it's the squad leader with the Iridium amour (not sure I'll upgrade him to it but thought it looked cool!)
I've stuck with the camo scheme with T'au light ochre for markings. I used the the tried and tested sponge weathering technique, I'm quite
pleased with how he turned out.
He's got 2 Fusion blasters for surprise tank hunting duties (as has the rest of the squad) they're all built and ready for painting.
Here's the pics:

Great work Jud,

your moving along at a fast pace! you put a squad together and paint it all up.. in the time it takes me to clean up a squad of 5x pathfinders and glue em :blush.:

The light ochre works well with your scheme...that's a winner   and the weathering is top notch...

colour me inspired to start painting my pathfinders tonight :biggrin.:

cheers, Mithril

p.s. i love the fire warrior squad too, very nice!!

Thanks for the likes guys!

Mithrilforge, glad you're getting on with some Pathfinders (I gotta get some markerlights other than the Shas'ui)

The project is still young so I am fully engaged, I want to get an Apocalypse sized force some time this year!

Had a bit of time this week so finished another Crisis suit!

I think I'm starting to get the knack of the weathering now (less is more!)
I've got another one to do for my first squad.

Question is what will be the best load out for the accompanying Drones? (I was thinking of putting 6 with them)

Or do I form the drones into a separate unit and drop them in at the same time?

I have 6 Crisis suits and 16 Drones to spread about.

My gut says shield drones...but lets see what Puretide er i mean SfPanzer has to say about it :happy.: ...

yeah less is more with weathering,as Duncan says "You can always add more weathering but it's harder to take it away"

why only 2x weapons on the suits?...do you have a system as well?..

Cheers, Mithril

Either Gun Drones for maximum Dakka (6 equals 24 shots = ~8 hits = ~2 dead Marines) or Shield Drones for maximum survivability.

It depends on whether you want to focus on quick damage and short lived protection or gamble on the FnP to protect your suits longer (and the 4++ to make anti-infantry shooting less efficient against the Drones).

Personally I'm a fan of Shield Drones, especially on Flamer Crisis, but I can't deny that Gun Drones are strong as well and if you suck at rolling the 5+++ the Gun Drones are clearly stronger.

Thanks for the speedy replies!

The reason they only have 2 weapons is that’s all I had Fusion Blaster wise! Plus they were getting heavy on pts. That said I was thinking of giving one of them a drone controller.

I’m going to go with the gun drones I think, more damage seems the way to go.

I've finished my first Crisis team!
Bit of a milestone for me, with the Fire Warriors and tank this is the most T'au I've ever painted!
Also I'm now halfway through everything I currently own for my T'au!
Next up will be some Drones. I'm trying to mix things up a bit!
