Codex: DW next week

Regarding Storm Bolters on Veterans - been thinking one of the cooler ways to model it would be to grab the wrist mounted storm bolters off the GK Strike Teams.

Now, regarding stalker pattern boltguns - I see there's one in the kill team sprue picture. Is that the only one?

I guess vehicles not getting SIA is because there is no one to change the magazines or load the specialist rounds? Just a thematic reason as to why... :smile.:

We're in year 41,000-something. We already know mind-linked weapons exist (one example being Inquisitor Covenant). The dread's already mind-linked to his weapon, why noone ever bothered adding a magazine/ammo switch to that link is troubling.

I guess the DW really could use techmarines, after all...

Only one, yes, and it's stuck in comical reloading pose. Because nothing says 'sniper' like being busy fiddling with ammo instead, eh?

There is a reason no one bothers with these and 95% of DW players convert their own stalkers...

I don't mind a single reload pose, mind - but I do think it would be particularly comical to run a squad of them reloading. Is it too difficult to separate that particular weapon from its arm?

Looks like I'll be considering conversions on that front either way. I like the stat line with SIA, but I wonder if it'd just be smarter to use Primaris to avoid all the headache with the conversions. Thanks for the info!

Honestly, that might be cheapest and most efficient route now - people used to convert them but bolters from Reiver or Intercessor box have nice 'tactical' look and are just about right length to pass as sniper rifles in the hands of vets.

I am still bummed Primaris stalkers are doubly useless thanks to both low rate of fire and capped AP

Hey all quick thought.

Veterans start with a bolter and can replace bolters for two items on the equipment list.

So a vet could actually take a storm bolter and boltgun?

I'm guessing if this right then it is 100% unintended

They didn't fall into the infamous bolter + shotgun trap again...

Replace bolter with up to two from the following list: Pistols, melee weapons, storm shield

Or with one of those and one of these: Bolters, combi-weapons, special weapons

Has there been any word on relics besides the beacon?

Basically the same relics from the 7th edition book. Tome of Mission Tactics, Storm Shield with a stationary 5++, xeno hunting Power Sword, super Clavis, Banebolts and the beacon. Banebolts changed the most; now it is +1 damage when firing SIA, plus mortal wounds on wound rolls of 6+. Might be good on a Terminator captain but that's about it.

I gave my captain a storm bolter, so those relic rounds could get some value.

Out of curiosity, why? Something happened to MC bolter that it's no longer better option, even over new SB?

I prefer 4 shots at 1 damage over 2 shots at 2 damage. While the AP-1 technically gives higher average damage, the weapon has a smaller target pool to hit that average.  Add in the relic ammo, which is basically free, and I can get that 2 damage anyway.

This codex seems really good.  It might not be competitive but it does something no other SM codex has done, make bolters and troops good.  Maybe not Eldar good but definitely viable for club level games.

Bolters have always been good. People are just love-struck with MSU and special weapons. Go play against a Sisters of Battle list with 20+ Storm Bolters in it. You'll start to understand.

Anything is good in high quantity. Just look at guard and orks. Marine players aren't used to being allowed to have a high quantity of shots. Much less SIA versions.

Honestly true. Bolters should have been RF2 all along and Storm bolters assault weapons, given their relative profiles and uses.

Would you just change them to Assault 2?

Stalker captain firing with Kraken and the relic that adds +1 damage would be str 4, -3 AP, 3 damage. Seems pretty awesome.

Except in the new codex Kraken is capped at AP -2 and Vengeance is capped at AP -3. So for a Stalker Bolt Rifle Kraken only adds additional range.
