Vanguard are much cheaper now. My usual build went from 243pts to 214pts.

My planned new build for 2nd squad will be: 208pts (6 Storm Shields and 4 Power Fists/Relic Blade.

On the note of Relic Blades... for 9pts this weapon is an absolute bargain! S+2, AP-3 And D3 damage. A Sergeant in Vanguard swings 3 times hitting on 3s (or 2s!) and potentially wounding on 2s against most infantry, 4s even against tanks and even T8 stuff! (When accompanied by a Captain).

Yum.

Though the Power fist is nice too...

Captain! You forgot to calculate the mandatory CP for upgrading the detachment to Vitrix Guard. And then you forgot the possible CP for taking that relic in addition to your free one. I wasn't even calculating if you were using Field Commander either to get the trait.

Because if you are Using Guilliman or Calgar you are gonna want them as your warlord. So the extra strats are a must to use the combo.

So the investment is actually 8-10! At least we have Adept of the Codex...

Edit: scratch relic. But you still need the Vitrix trait, right. So 8-9 CP.

I don't have to use Field Commander though I admit giving up on the Adept of the Codex trait is hard to do even if it's only once a battle round.

So yes it is hard to spend all those CPs you are right.

But I imagine I'd the single point CPs most anyway. Fight Like Demigods is cheap as is Hellfire Shells, Masterful Marksmanship and maybe even Flakk missile.

Occasionally it'll be nice to use a 3 pointer though.

Hmm. Maybe I'll need 2 Battalions for my plans to work!

I think at this point 2x battalions and if you can squeeze him in, Calgar would get you plenty. 15 cps and AotC for regen.

Either way, I love the options here. We shouldn't have the ability to use everything. Vanguard got so good tho. I still haven't figured out how I want to build mine.

okay so i previously um'd and are'd about buying the victrix units. So im gonna take the plunge.

10x sternguard with special issue bolters. 160 under CA

Ideal for marksmen stratagem, any suggestions to load out? Arrival in pod or rhino.

10x vanguard with plasma pistols and power swords, No Jump packs. 230 under CA

All combat stratagems and likely to arrive via Storm Raven, any suggestion here? i would go all lightning claws but i find the power sword and pistol more "ultramarine"

Ancient with power sword. goes with vanguard and captain

Definitely wise to take the Victrix plunge.

I like my Rhino for added target saturation. And would likely launch them at targets in support of the Vanguard.

Can't believe we haven't got a full leak! Damn it lol.

Well i found out via review site the following:

Warlord trait

One per battle in the fight phase, all units within 6 of the warlord gets to re-roll failed to wound roll. Not +1 to wound like community stated.

Relics

Soldiers blade is +1 S , -4AP & 2D. It replaces power swords and master crafted ones.

Banner: +1 LD within 12 for all victrix units, +1 A for all victrix units within 6. Relic doesn't replace the banner ability already on the model.

Side note, Relic stratagem cannot be use to call either of these two as it's a "Relic of Ultramar" not "Chapter Relic" so be sure to choose carefully.

Do we know how reliable this is?

Regardless thanks for the information.

Soldiers Blade is alright but I'd be more inclined to take the Teeth of Terra.

The Standard... extra attack is amazing HOWEVER combining it with a Vanguard assault force might be a challenge. Rhino Sternguard seems compulsory.

That Warlord Trait seems very different to me which doesn't bode well for the rumour of course since that's a massive mistake.

Changes a bit. No more +1 to wound but full rerolls is good if you can time when to use it.

That Banner is great. Definitely need to get him up the table. Perhaps put a Vanguard squad in a Rhino but that is difficult to justify when Jump Packs are so cheap.

Doesn't feel like anything really helps Sternguard, which is sad. Everything is focused on the Fight Phase or close combat.

Idaho, why do you feel Sternguard are necessary? I know you already ran them, and the banner can give them essentially the Pedro extra attack bubble, but why else you think?

Seems everything BUT Sternguard benefit in this formation much more.

They cost 3 points more than the average tactical marine under CA. but can achieve so much more with exception if obsec.

The marksmen stratagem with an liutenant and captain is still effective and devastating.

Yes it does seem like a missed opportunity for the unit but it's no like are with out functions.

hell fire shell; flank missile, marksmen and all combat based stratagems too.

Sternguard are just very effective. I have had lots of good results with them combining their shooting with a charge to finish off targets. 2 attacks base and a further attack and weapon on the Sergeant (I go for a Lightning Claw) can finish off a lot of things. Being an Ultramarines player I also retreat and shoot when needed.

I would have liked to receive a bonus to shooting with a 3rd Strategum (it's no surprise that Primaris get more...) but we can't have everything eh.

What do people think about the Relics?

I like the Soldier's Blade as it's a quality weapon. A Captain with it has 4 attacks that hit on 2s with the usual Captain reroll, but crucially also stacks with the additional attack from a Banner. (I believe the items are described as Relics so fall under the usual rules). The high AP means there won't be that lucky 6 when attacking power armour.

However my problem is I could just save the Relic space for a simple Relic Blade for 9pts now, or even go for the Teeth of Terra.

From how I read it, the extra relics do not limit your normal allotment of relics. But you do have to choose as you can only take 1 relic from each specialist detachment. You get access to the new relics just by paying the 1 cp to create the detachment.

So in the end, if you were running an Indomitus Crusade Battalion AND a Victrix Guard Vanguard, you could have up to 5 relics. 1 from the Indomitus Crusaders, 1 from the Victrix Guard, and your usual 1-3 from Codex Space Marines.

...

There is no denying Sternguard are amazing. It's my absolute favorite unit in our codex. That's why I was keen to ask and make sure I didn't miss anything.

For pure efficiency's sake, it would seem like if going Victrix, your points would be better spent on more Vanguard Vets. But I can see a place for Sternguard, tho that selection is more tame and less overall useful of the CP spent to create the Victrix detachment. Just my initial thoughts.

Ahem, Drop pod anyone? I know they didn't really receive the love they deserved when it comes to points drops but if you're looking for means to get your mixed bag of support, banner, capt, lt, apothecary etc they could fill that purpose without taking the risk of having the rhino blown out from under them as they move up.

Totally agree with that sentiment Black Orange.

On another note... How do people feel about a footslogging Chapter Ancient (likely in a Rhino) to take advantage of the Banner of Maccragge Inviolate? Whilst the benefits are immense, getting left behind by the Vanguard is a very real possibility especially after the initial charge.

Not sure about the Drop Pod suggested. Seems scary to drop down like that you know, reliant on a decent spot and can't get within 9" which doesn't help a charging unit.

This is some crazy fun stuff. I’m really pumped about this fir the entire codex.

The funny thing is I did a review on the Indomitus Crusade Detachment and I really don’t like it. The CA and Vigilius Campaign have swung it sharply back into veterans and Dreadnoughts. And this is coming from someone who loves the Primaris aesthetics!

Even in the Deathwatch forum there is a fair amount of gloom over Primaris now and that is just because of ca pricing and Storm Shields! They don’t even get the benefits of this detachment.

My conundrum is piping my Vanguard over to Deathwatch or Ultramarines. A super hard decision as this formation is really potent for these units.

I imagine a mix of Vanguard hammer shields ( that’s how my Deathwatch VV are configured) coming in hot with a new Primaris Calgar surrounded by plasma Inceptors.

Right now I can’t see using the Primaris detachment, this one is just so much better and let’s you use units that a lot of people kind of shelved for various reasons.

One thing I see that sucks about trying to run Calgar Prime with Vanguard, is that he doesn't teleport anymore. You have to drive him up in a Repulsor.

On that note as well, it's weird that Calgar can't be in the Victrix Guard. Captains only.

I think the Vanguard with Storm Shields Victrix Guard will be a staple in many lists now. I have unashamedly chosen 20 with 8 Storm Shields (5 and 3 respectively) to lead an attack with a Captain and the Soldier's Blade (a cheap power sword boosted up).

The follow up force are 8 Sternguard in a Rhino to complete the pressure on opponents and help take objectives with defenders.

The Indomintus Crusade formation is okay of course, but Intercessors are too slow and easy to kill to really benefit. Perhaps we need a thread to discuss that formation?

What do you mean regarding Calgar (Primaris) coming in hot? I didn't think he could teleport and he's otherwise quite slow? For that reason I suspect he won't match well with this Formation (Victrix Guard).
