Hintzy
My first vow, consisting of a lone Librarian Dreadnought is finished: I'll be moving from Missouri to Texas in two weeks, and after the dust settles I'll have a bit more for a second vow. Still nothing significant, but better than nothing! Leonaides
Vow 1 completed... I'm sure there are tweaks and touchups but as my usual opponents would attest - thats more than my usual level of painting (shading and drybrush-highlighting my bases is unheard of for the last 15 years or so!) "I Leonaides rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX on the side of the Blood Angels forum and vow to complete 4 primaris lieutenants (3 power sword/1 stock) and 2 captains with jump packs (1 th/combi melta and 1 relic axe) of total value 527pts on or before September 1st, 2019. Success will bring me eternal glory and failure will doom me to wear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until the year-end." And now because i'm stoopid: I Leonaides rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX on the side of the Blood Angels forum and vow to complete 1 Phobos Primaris Captain, 1 Phobos Lieutenant, 1 Terminator Librarian, 1 Primaris Librarian, 1 Chaplain with jump pack and 1 Chaplain Lemartes) of total value 628pts on or before September 1st, 2019. Silas7
What are peoples thoughts on washes? targeted application or full coverage? I've done the body of my dread with a targeted wash and I think i'll have to go back and tidy up the base color so that the dark patches don't look too messy. Majkhel
My way for washes is to give a model a solid wash (almost full cover) followed by a selective application into the recesses. Sometimes I even make a third round to blend the two existing layers or deepen the shadow in critical areas. After that, I need to build up highlited areas though, as model is pretty dark by then (my base color is Mephy Red). About the Levi - how about some grass tufts? I think the would look nice and add some extra height. Arkhanist
What are peoples thoughts on washes? targeted application or full coverage? I've done the body of my dread with a targeted wash and I think i'll have to go back and tidy up the base color so that the dark patches don't look too messy. I'm too lazy to do normal washes on marine armour - because that means tidying up the base coat all over again. I have two approaches. 1] For a clean look (marines), gloss coat, then pin wash using enamel tamiya panel liner in the crevices etc. Any small amount of overflow is easy to tidy up after it's dried with a clean brush and enamel thinner (I use odourless spirit, but you can use mineral spirits, dedicated enamel thinner etc, basically any non-aggressive organic solvent) 2) for a dirtier, weathered look (tanks/dreads), gloss coat followed by an all-over coat of flory models clay wash. Then use damp kitchen towel/cotton bud to remove it from surfaces, leaving it in the recesses. You can take it right back so only the panel lines are filled, but it works really well to get faint weathered streaks, dirt build around recesses etc so it looks naturally battle-worn. The new option is contrast medium substantially added to ordinary washes, such as nuln oil. It makes it super-attracted to crevices without significantly staining the surface, so definitely has applications for pin-washing on easy mode. I haven't tried it as an overall effect yet, but for metals it's super effective. Dont-Be-Haten
What are peoples thoughts on washes? targeted application or full coverage? I've done the body of my dread with a targeted wash and I think i'll have to go back and tidy up the base color so that the dark patches don't look too messy. I usually do recess washes only for things like marines, then I add layers to cover up any area I splotch. For metals I do massive washes usually Nuln Oil followed by Agrax, for a dirtier gritty look, and then dry brush necron compound to highlight. The main thing to monitor for is the pooling. That's the toughest thing to avoid doing. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356287-blood-angels-outpost/page/11/#findComment-5335007 Share on other sites

I've done the body of my dread with a targeted wash and I think i'll have to go back and tidy up the base color so that the dark patches don't look too messy. I do full coverage on my stuff, Death Guard and Blood Angels alike. I used to do a wash-mix of water and a Reaper brown I have for my Death Guard, now I just use Nuln Oil. I kind of like how both look. I just do full Nuln Oil on my BA stuff. Washes work wonders on Death Guard, they do okay on Blood Angels. That techmarine model, good grief, I could not make myself paint it... but no more nagging for complicated models... that's why we have ETL to push us to actually build them! I 'm really satisfied I built that techmarine, so I guess quoting some Manowar is in order: "A prophecy spoken, a promise fulfilled More blood will be spilled, more will be killed" Hint, hint...
