The end of an Era, 11 years since release. Defending my paint station in his basecoated form. But I finally got around to painting him. See it can happen!

Fairly happy with him as he's the first bit of Heresy I've felt like painting since April.

He's still one of my favourite Heresy models and you've done him justice. Nice work.

He is a stunning model and you aught to be proud of how well you painted him. I have a Polux model I feel the same way about that I need to eventually paint (I don't even play Fists but he is my dude).

A small request for people using Quote functionality when making reply: I would appreciate if the quoted content would not repeat pictures unless there was a strong reason for it. This thread is already rather image-heavy by design, and unncecessarily repeating the same image tends to make it difficult to read (and rather diminishes than adds to the original posters contribution).

 

There are times when quoting a picture is necessary to easily understand a response, for example when a picture was posted a while ago and you have a question that pertains to some specific element of that image. However, if the image was posted recently and the response is essentially to congratulate the poster for a great paint job, it is usually quite straightforward to indicate to which picture you are referring to (e.g. "That photo of Sevatar that Loquille posted two days ago is so impressive that it haunts me at night").

 

That said, thanks to all the posters who have been sharing their work!

@Xenith I'll try to take some better pictures, but it may be a few days. Think I took a quick snap of two testers. They're really rough though the colour difference shows much better. 

 

IRL, I'd say the forged red reads as a dark candied orange and the ruby red literally as a jewel in colour.

Finished 3 chosen for the command squad on bike.

 

Axes count as spears but those arms are magnetized though. I was way to lazy to cut up 3 two handed spears and glue them back together. 

 

One head is missing (want to use the half bionic head from an old first born kit and wasn't yet able to remove it from another torso) and the apothecary needs another shoulder guard. But I'm really happy. 

 

 

Only 6 bikes and 2 Proteus LS to go until I can field a 'non boots in the ground' list. 

 

Built a Myrmidon heavy Mechanicum list on the side also as our little heresy group is playing now more often.

Working on more Bearers of the Word. These cats are likely going to end up filling the ranks of a Veteran Tactical Squad, with at least a Warp Blaster in it.

For the skin, I mixed AP Company Grey and Opal Skin 2:1 to get an appropriately Chaos-y skintone. My recipe for the red is TTC Berserker Red as the basecoat, followed by highlights of Sanguine Scarlet and then AP Resplendent Red in places. Any black areas are basecoated with Vallejo GC Black. That’s the basic process, though I might iterate on it.

That's three polished off. You can really see the gritty primer on the first. Not sure what happened there.

Give them a gentle rub with sanding foam (1000 grit or higher) or, if unpainted, a medium stiffness toothbrush.  With the sanding foam you will need to go back in with a brush but it isn't too much work if you focus on knocking the lumps off.  The toothbrush is harsher but quicker, so only do it on unpainted minis.

I like the look of leg armour on those Word Bearers.

 

As for priming, I am personally a brush-on undercoat person (with heavy preference for white). At some point, I tried my hand at spray priming, but after some less than succesful incidents I decided not to get any more spray paints. Spray undercoat can be quick for big patches of figures, and provide very nice smooth result, but if things go badly you can also end up with big batch of figures needing paint removal. That said, I also found that often you still needed to finish the undercoat by brush to reach all the nooks and crannies.

 

As for spray varnish, I have heard too many horror stories to even consider trying my hand (many of these involve mixing up primer and varnish). Doing the varnishing by hand also gives a certain sense of completion to me, and is not particularly slow. My current preference is for Vallejo satin varnish, thinned down to make it spread nicely.

 

(I am also affected by climate and living conditions, which effectively limit spray use to outdoor use in the brief summer months. Unfortunately during those summer months there can also be lot of fluffy plan-based material floating in the air, which can end up stuck to the figures by spray paint.)

It’s been a while since I posted here. Thought I would show the Contemptor from a 3rd Legion ZM force I’m working on.  They are a loyalist force assaulting the Precentor Palace on Istvaan III.  So it’s before the virus bombing and hence the clean armor and marble floor.

They look great. I don't know why but my brain read your earlier photo as black with touches of red but not in this one. I actually had to go back and check.

Isstvan III before virus bombing? Now that is early heresy!

 

The marble floor idea is interesting, though as an avid cyclist the implementation somehow reminds me of a cycle path crossroads on an early winter day, with tire tracks showing against a thin layer of snow. I should probably spend more time admiting marble floors, but they are not particularly common around here.
