So back on the topic of Heresy-era Dark Angels in robes and so on, I wanted to make a mk iii marine a bit less plain. But I really don't like how the helmet sticks over the gorget. So what do people think about the other heads? Is the cowl over-the-top for 30k? Or with the bare head is he too 'Black Templar' for 30k? I might even go to the bits store and get that sternguard beard head, since Forgeworld seem to think beards are in fashion for 1st Legion.

I'm a big fan of that very first one. Feels "right" based off the first few books in the HH, namely Descent of Angels, Fallen Angels, Savage Weapons short, etc.

Thank you, I will investigate this option too - there is one not far from me, but I haven’t yet dipped my toe in those waters...

They are dangerous and addictive waters my friend.

Can confirm. Started as "I can print extra little weapons!", to "One more defunct GW game from the 90s wouldn't hurt..."

While I love the Mk.III helm normally, I agree that it looks odd with the gorget. If you have it, there is another cowled head in the DA plastic set that might fit. I think it's Mk.VII, but it has armour plates instead of a standard rebreather.

This one: http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/product_info.php/dark-angels-veterans-hooded-head-p-3467?osCsid=16c648e28cc6b107018a2dc3d0d66f10

Have you got any of the FW Dark Angel heads? They might look a little better. I think hooded is ok if used sparingly but I've never liked bare headed Marines of any description.

Otherwise, all looking like decent options to me.

So I've been working on the lost legions "unique unit" so that it is less generic and have come up with this a veteran squad who utilise mass power mauls..

It's either genius or terrible, it's yet to be decided! 40ish WS5, S6 AP nothing hits, the volkite of combat weapons

FAQ just dropped for Book 9 (poor Malevolence).

Short, but what changes ARE there are mostly good. Only fixes* Stormwing and a few other things, but it's a good start, assuming the other rites/rules/units are going to be FAQ'd later.

I have started fussing over my heresy Wolves again.

They have been sitting gathering dust, as other models bumped ahead of them in the queue. Mainly because, I knew what I wanted to do with them, but I did not know how to go about doing it.

Finally I made a start. I like the cataphractii bits, but I hate the chainfists, it just looks stupid and puny, so went with 40K chainfists, or big chain weapons which can proxy as chainfists. I also did a mix of catapharctii and 40K claws, both to me look wicked cool. I also tried to balance out the leader so he can be 40K legal, so the unit is not totally chainfist and claw.

Still got lots to do, such as the fur pelts etc, but that will be next (maybe in a month or 2 depending on work)

Still working things through, but think I am going in the right direction, C7C would be most welcome at this point.

Lastly is the Praetor.

I really do not know what is going on with this, it has sat for ages and I am mystified as to what to make of him.

I ground out the cloak, so that it wasnta stupid thick chunk of resin.

I ground out the solid resin block from between his legs and in the process damaged the left leg. This will get fixed by making a cast of the armour biat and extending it, plus positioning a pelt to hide the damage.

I ground off the pelt over his shoulders, so this will get re-done.

Removed and replaced the head

I also rotated the arms, now I can't tell if he is trying to keep his balance to avoid falling over or has juscarried out a big lateral swing with his paragon blade to disembowel/ decapitate someone/thing.

But the biggest thing for me is the left hand and the axe... It just looks wrong, especially how he has it gripped so high up. I did originallyhave a knife in his hand blade pointing backwards, but used the knife for a moritat/ vigilator model.

I really need help, to work out what to do with him to make the model make sense (appear more in a natural/ fluid pose) or if I should just cut my losses and consign him to the bits bin. Please, any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks for looking

I personally like the axe grip as it is on the praetor. I would change the right hand though, maybe to demonstrate that it's being swung? Maybe give him something like tokens in motion at the haft of the axe and chainsword to further exaggerate the movement?

Everybody, thanks so much for the feedback on the robed mark iii Dark Angel. I am going to try to find a helmet, whether a bits store or a 3d printer. Whilst I really like the cowled head, I think it looks a bit strange if the hood is separated from the tabard by the gorget. Is he wearing two robes, one under and one over armour? Or is it a separate cowl piece - seems a bit cutesy for a space marine? I have a berserker head that will fit with the chin inside the gorget (obviously bunny ears will be cut off), but that's just one idea - ideally I'd like to be visually closer to mark iii to match a future squad.

In the meantime, please see my robed mark iv (or rather mark iv/vi mash-up) marine painted up.

@Dantay VI - I love what you've done with the terminators mixing plastics and resin. Good luck with the praetor - I love the head-swap but the expression seems very calm if he has just peformed a disemboweling move. I guess some astartes really don't show any emotion when killing ...

So lucky me, my friend did a Forge World order and he's got some bits coming in for me this week so I can finish my Mark IV and Mark III squads from the Betrayal at Calth and Burning of Prospero boxes I picked up (have some Nuncio-voxes as I've already got the Vexilia on the marines). Yay!

LameBeard: I honestly think your Mark IV/VI (with Mark III arms ) Veteran looks good. Regarding the question before it.... I suppose that's all to taste. But the cover of Descent of Angels (where my current profile picture comes from) features a I Legionnaire with a hood and no robes (the full art shows he has a hood and cape), so there is precedent in artwork by GW/FW/Black Library themselves for hoods and no robes.

Thanks I had another look. That might be an idea - hood which is part of cloak - that makes sense. And the guy on the right, some sort of robe no hood. Maybe I even find little wings for the helm? Could cover the cut-off bunny ear damage.

And the bolter is from a mk iii kit, but I promise the arms are from mk iv.

I really like the mark iv robed guy. It works well I think and is sufficiently sensible that he could in theory actually wear it! There's an element of sometimes going overboard on things like that.

I've been making some Breachers for a mournival support breacher squad. Very happy with the sarg:

That works and is likely when there's hood and cape but no robes. And the wings.... If you play 40k Dark Angels (or know anyone who has them) you can probably nab the wings from the Ravenwing Champion.

And the arms...so I had just primed the frame of a Gunpla before posting that, so I maaaaay have been a little high from the fumes and the lighting in the images made the Mark IV arms look like Mark III to me

They're adorable!

And agreed, the Xiphon is a looker (Hello inspired by Vipers from BS:G).

A Lightning might be better rules wise but the Xiphon wins out with me for just looking cooler.

Amen.

It's first on my list of "part three" of the Luna Wolves army build. Here's hoping they don't discontinue it before then!

Such a gorgeous kit. So perfectly "Astartes"
