the-crimson-dorn
Decided to upgrade the McFarlane Space Marine into a Crimson Fist Captain of some description... I have the old Forgeworld Imperial Space Marine model which must've been right before the mould failed as the joint lines are all over the place. The scale isnt the same but the accessories are almost perfect... the-crimson-dorn
There are some serious mould lines on the McFarlane figure, so have to spend some time sorting these out Going to be cutting the skull away and replace it with a fist icon at a later stage. First thing first is the hot water trick to break the model down Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5640926 Share on other sites
the-crimson-dorn
You can see how the forgeworld imperial space marine bits will work... the scale is perfect Adding a skull to the back and some digging around in my bits box to add another to the buckle Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5640930 Share on other sites

the-crimson-dorn
Added a skull to the helmet, and some brass details Also want to try and add a bionic to the helmet similar to the primaris captain below N1SB 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5640936 Share on other sites
the-crimson-dorn
I got started on upgrading the chest, removing the skull from the aquilla and replacing it with the old forgeworld imperial fist icon Its starting to come together at this point I'm also planning to add some sort of rope with a crux terminatus as well Elzender and N1SB 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5640937 Share on other sites

the-crimson-dorn
Chopped up half some sort of grav cannon from the centurion kit for the bionic... it has and end piece that resembles the glass orb, which was ideal. Also started messing about with the rope, but the wire Ive got is too thick, so will need to get a thinner one StratoKhan and Bryan Blaire 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5641018 Share on other sites
StratoKhan
That bionic eye looks good, nice spot on that bit. The FW fist icon also seems to be the perfect size to fit into the wings on the chest. I like it when things like that happen. One thing I noticed is that the brass eagle you used on the fauld seems slightly off-center. Was that intentional? The project is looking great so far, keep up the good work. Brother-Chaplain Kage
Looking great so far! Cool to see that the old FW marine parts are about the right scale for the new one. For the rope, I'd suggest getting some thin diameter solder to make it because I did something similar making my own tow cables for a Macharius. This is three strands twisted together. http://i.imgur.com/e5vqwhB.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5641088 Share on other sites
Naryn
Can't wait to see where this goes! I love how well the old Forgeworld marine bits and the brass etch fits. What's that little piece of brass etch on his hand? Brother-Chaplain Kage
Looks like another Fist icon on the back of the hand. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5641225 Share on other sites
the-crimson-dorn
Thanks very much! Excellent question about the brass eagle on the fauld... it’s definitely off centre and definitely not intentional! The plastic from McFarlane is flexible and soft, and there is almost no wiggle time when you’re glueing something... I didn’t manage to drop the brass eagles on bang in the middle and then didn’t want to risk bending or folding them trying to move them so just left them. They are symmetrical however, which just means they’re both off! That bionic eye looks good, nice spot on that bit. The FW fist icon also seems to be the perfect size to fit into the wings on the chest. I like it when things like that happen. One thing I noticed is that the brass eagle you used on the fauld seems slightly off-center. Was that intentional? The project is looking great so far, keep up the good work. the-crimson-dorn
Correct, each hand has a small brass fist on the back which I was going to paint the paint the same colour as the fist so it is a more subtle detail. I have the same plan for the brass strip on the top of the helmet, it just to add some more details Looks like another Fist icon on the back of the hand. the-crimson-dorn
Got over excited and tried a coat of primer on the chest piece to see how it came out... the paint doesnt take the exact same as the GW plastic, but it did a good job of highlighting how much more sanding I have to do! I then tried twisting some thinner wire, as per the suggestion above, and it worked much better! the-crimson-dorn
I've been loosely basing this model on the old school Kantor model from GW With this in mind I wanted to update the shoulder pads with some statement details I think the trim is a little too big, so might try and cut it down. Also cant decide whether to add studding around the edge or not... Xin Ceithan
Very cool! I added one of the Mc Farlane Marines to my pile of shame and still can‘t decide on a chapter. Was also wondering about a source and scale for some accessories. Sp I am curios to see what other people are using. I like the bionic eye bit idea — might have to steal that! Definitely going to follow this. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5641325 Share on other sites
the-crimson-dorn
Have been working on a crux terminatus for the right hand shoulder pad using some plasticard and a skull from the old FW kit... will be adding some more rope details as well WAR, Domhnall and Naryn 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5641866 Share on other sites
the-crimson-dorn
Used the copper wire again to make some rope and then Then added some greenstuff to make the rope hooks and the tassels. Also added some plasticard detailing and studs Brother-Chaplain Kage 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5642233 Share on other sites
the-crimson-dorn
I wanted to improve the close combat weapons so did some 3D modelling for a shield, hammer and axe Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5642310 Share on other sites
the-crimson-dorn
First time 3D printing anything like this, so a bit of trial an error... the eagle on the hammer didnt come out properly, so will probably fill that in with green stuff and try something else. The axe is also a bit on the small side, but the shield worked out really well. Lots of sanding required though! sbarnby71 and Domhnall 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5642319 Share on other sites
Naryn
Those weapons look lovely, and the crux terminatus, rope, wnd extra detailing on the pauldron are excellent. Great work! Its fascinating to see how a change of scale lets you reinterpret old bits. the-crimson-dorn
Sprayed the shoulder pad black to see how the paint takes, and also to see what how much sanding was left... the black works great at showing up any marks or dodgy lines... the-crimson-dorn
Also chopped the bolter down as I find it ridiculously oversized... its more like a heavy bolter... so chopping it made it feel more true to size I want to make it into a master crafted bolter eventually Xin Ceithan, BLACK BLΠFLY and Domhnall 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/368045-mcfarlane-space-marine-crimson-fist-wip/#findComment-5642661 Share on other sites
