Brother Dallo
Hi folks, I've got the Kill Team bug, but I don't need to add any more plastic to my pile of shame, so I'm digging through my spares to cobble together a Kill Team. The hope is to avoid needing to buy anything for the new edition, apart from the rules, but we'll see how that goes. Recently, I've found it hard to ignore how bad the scale of 40K models is, with tiny Marines and big headed Cadians, so I wanted to address this with my models. The path of least resistance was to make bigger Ork Boyz, using Nobz as a basis. I'm working to convert up a Team which includes every Kommando specialist and will likely expand to a Greenskin team, when I see what they get. For now, here is a WIP Rokkit Boy. He's based on a Nob with Kombi weapon. As you can see, he's a good bit bulkier than a standard Boy. He'll be on a 32mm base when he's done. I'm also mostly finished with my Burna. Just need to adjust the straps and greenstuff the holes in the shoota barrel. Currently undecided on Clan colours, but will see what rules (if any) there are. C&C welcome. What do people think of the scale? anything you would improve? Cheers. Veteran Sergeant
Unless you just want them to be bigger, the "problem" with Orks is they are all squatting and their necks stick straight out from their chests. The Nobz and Stormboyz have slightly better posture in the bodies though. I fixed the regular Boyz by rotating the hips and sculpting them upward necks so the heads sat higher. They still have the typical bad Ork posture, just without constantly being in a state of air bench. The middle Ork is on a Nob body with a raised head. The other Ork is a Stormboy, but he is standing on a piece of debris so his height is misleading. The Marine on the right was true scaled, and roughly the height of a modern Primaris. Brother Dallo
I appreciate the in depth reply. The pictures are helpful. I’ve actually copied the technique you use for your Marines, to make a Nob to lead the Boyz. I’ll throw some photos up when he’s a bit further along. With regards to raising the heads, it’s not an aesthetic I’m particularly a fan of. In my head, Orks are meant to be hunched over, muscular bruisers. Raising the head (while it may be more “realistic”) breaks immersion for me. Brother Dallo
Thanks for the encouragement folks. I was chatting to some friends and got some useful feedback on the guitar wire I'd used as piping. In short, it didn't look natural as it didn't bend in the correct places. I replaced this with some plastic pipes and I think the end result is a lot better. It took a little bending for the rear pipe to get it to attach to the fuel pack naturally, but on the whole, it wasn't a lot of additional work. So far I've got four Boyz assembled, primed and with some base colours down. First we have my regular Choppa Boy and the Big Shoota. Then we have the Rokkit Boy and Burna Boy. I'm painting these up as Goffs, so have laid the groundwork for some checkers and dags. Will probably try freehanding the checks first, but might fall back on marking tape, if that fails. So far these have had a grey prime with a white zenith highlight, then Goregrunta Fur Contrast all over to act as a grimy base layer. I've found this prime and a variety of Contrast Browns give a nice starting point for painting Orcs, so assuming it will work here too. The yellow eyes will be neatened up with green paint when I get around to painting that. C&C welcome. Brother Dallo
Just a quick update today, as I made decent progress on the Choppa Boy over lunch. This was my first time using red to darken green paint mixes, and I think it works quite nicely. Still want to push a few of the highlights and add some rust/blood effects (plus finish the base), but pretty chuffed with this for essentially a lunch time's worth of painting (outside of primer). Brother Dallo
Yup. Using Nobz as Boyz and doing some surgery to make the actual Nob for the unit leader. Considered using a Warboss, but he won’t fit on a 32mm base. Thanks. Brother Dallo
Good idea, consider it officially stolen. Muahahaaa On the condition that you share your results, It’s not really a sustainable way of making an Ork army, as it would be so expensive, but if you only have 10-15 models for a Kill Team, then it’s much more achievable. Brother Dallo
Hi folks, I'm keeping my momentum on this project, so I'll keep striking while the iron is hot. I made another Choppa Boy today. Nice and simple conversion. One of the old AoBR monopose Nobz with a head and axe-head donated from the Boyz kit. I also did some work on my Slasha Boy. Still need to decide what I'm doing with the head and if I'm adding any additional details to the base. Finally, I've been doing a bit of work on the Boss Nob to differentiate him from the rest of the Boyz. I've added plastic spacers to the bottom of his boots, legs and waist. All in all it adds up to maybe 2-3mm height difference. This combined with a bosspole and a taller base should hopefully be enough to make him look different. At any rate, he'll have a different weapon, so should be pretty easy to identify on the table. I was originally planning to magnetise so I could use either the power klaw or the big choppa, but I'm struggling to find a pose that works for both. I may just pick one over the other if I can't get the posing right. I feel the power klaw is classic, but historically (at least in 7th and 8th ed) you didn't see many big choppaz about, so that would be a nice option too. C&C welcome. Brother Dallo
Hi folks, Made a bit more progress with my Kill Team Boss. The head and neck are cut from a Savage Orruk and glued on to the torso a bit higher than usual. The back of the neck was then filled in with greenstuff. I'm currently thinking of painting the stone earing to resemble Blackstone, since Orks are the kind of species who would find a mysterious, potentially radioactive material and stick it though their ear to use as jewelry. I want to give him a trophy rack or boss pole to increase his height even more, but haven't found a combination of bitz that I like yet. The hand is from the Crypt Horrors kit. I'd appreciate some feedback about whether or not he looks mean enough to lead a squad of upsized Boyz? Cheers. That crypt horror hand is probably nearly big enough to count as a mini power claw haha. What models and loadout is in your kill team then? Brother Dallo
Currently I’ve got: Two Choppa Boyz Nob with Power Klaw Burna Boy Rokkit Boy Big Shoota Slasha Boy With plans to add a Dakka Boy and a Comms Boy along with a Grot to take me up to a legal Kommando Kill Team (essentially every specialist apart from the Bomb Squig). As I mentioned, these can also realistically be used as regular Boyz (instead of Kommandos), but I haven’t seen what they get in their army list yet. Thanks for the comment. Replies really help with project motivation. Brother Dallo
Afternoon folks, Still chugging along with this project. I've got three more models ready to prime. I've raised the neckline on these Orks by triming down the existing neck stump, then gluing a neck from the Ork Boyz kit and filling in the gap with some greenstuff. They are still hunched over, but it adds a little bit more height and allows a bit of movement in the head positions. Finally, here is a scale shot between a regular Boy and my scaled up version. I have to say, I'm happy with this size. I think it matches the fluff a bit better of them reaching two metres plus in height. C&C welcome.
