Random Chapter Inspiration Thread

I came up with a bunch of Chapters and a Sisters of Battle Order based on Covenants from Dark Souls 3.

  1. Darkmoon Blades - Ultramarines Successor, presumed lost
  2. Blue Sentinels - Successors of Darkmoon Blades
  3. Order of the Way of Blue - Sisters of Battle Order, good relationship with Blue Sentinels and Aldritch Faithful, poor with Hounds of Farron
  4. Sunlight Brethren - Salamanders Successor, fleet based
  5. Aldritch Faithful - Imperial Fists Successor
  6. Hounds of Farron - Blood Angels Successor

I have a few more notes on each. I've used the Deathwatch: Rites of Battle Chapter Creation rules to expand the notes a little.

The Raven Guard have some nods to Edgar Allan Poe (mostly his the Raven poem), what about RG successors based on Poes other stories?

Here are a list of concepts for a chapter based on The Cask of Amontillado not all of them go togheter:

- Don’t let slights go unpunished, be they from enemies or supposed allies

- ^ possibly inability to let go of even the smallest of perceived insults.

- ^ maybe their sense of insult and need of vengeance also exist between battle-brothers

- prefer their vengeance cold and have no problem acting friendly toward their target until a opportunity for their vengeance.

- Meditative rituals during which the battle-brother is walled up in a niche.

- Surviving physically and mentally while walled up in a niche for a time is part of the aspirant tests

- try to capture their enemies alive, or at least their leadership, so they can wall them up alive in niches.

- Italian-ish names

- Wine aficionado

- Montresor's family coat-of-arm: a golden foot in a blue background crushing a snake whose fangs are embedded in the foot's heel = the Chapter's symbol

- ^ Their armour could be blue with golden greaves and feets.

- ^ Snakebite orks / sslyths as returning enemies

- ^ biting snakes are a part of the aspirant tests

- Moto: No one provokes us with impunity

- Fortunato wearing a jester's motley = a Harlequin troop as returning enemy / species in fighting Harlequin troops

- Carnival/s are part of the chapter's homeworld culture

- Their victory fests take the form of carnivals

- based on many the The Cask of Amontillado illustrations I have seen, use Freeguild heads/hats

- Their fortress-monastery lay beneath the catacombs of a great city, or the catacomb area of a hivecity

Here are a list of concepts for a chapter based on The Cask of Amontillado not all of them go together:

I see many good and imaginative ideas here.

- ^ maybe their sense of insult and need of vengeance also exist between battle-brothers

To prevent the Chapter from destroying itself as the Marines take revenge against each other, the Chapter must enforce a code of conduct upon its members. Any insults, real or perceived, must be satisfied via ritual dueling with less lethal weapons, to minimize the chance of crippling or killing one's own battle-brothers; the vendetta can only be conducted against the one offering the insult, and his appointed second; violation of this code of conduct will result in one being declared damnatio memoriae, and then either exiled to the Deathwatch as a blackshield, or executed.

- try to capture their enemies alive, or at least their leadership, so they can wall them up alive in niches.

I have the gruesome idea of sealing captured enemies in a cask that is then filled with molten metal, e.g., silver. A stethoscope links the cask to a loudspeaker, so the Chapter may hear the captive scream as he, she, or it is simultaneously burnt and drowned in molten metal. The resulting materials are then used to create arms and armor "imbued with [the Chapter's] vengeance."

Great ideas!

- ^ biting snakes are a part of the aspirant tests

Taking inspiration from Dan Abnett's Brothers of the Snake, how about Marines intentionally letting venomous snakes bite them, their gene-seed organs transferring the snake venom to their Betcher's glands, the better to poison their enemies? Edited by Bjorn Firewalker

Another Space Marine Chapter idea I had was these guys: The Admonishers.

Fdn2e56.png

(The icon is a book being hit with a hammer BTW).

Basically a pisstake of GW's (and certain elements of the fanbase's) inflexibility/no-fun-allowed tendencies. They follow the Codex TO THE LETTER, and will not deviate from it in any way (even if it's an incorrect understanding of the Codex caused by their incredibly literal thinking). As a result of their reverence of the Codex (and poor understanding of it) they refuse to make use of non-standardized wargear, adopt very limited battle plans, and will not work with Imperial forces they believe are diverging from "proper" doctrine. Their main "use" is the fact that due to their absurd scrutiny of the Imperial creed in all its forms, they are remarkably good at rooting out corruption and heresy within the Imperium. This means they are most often used more as the galaxy's most expensive military police than as a proper fighting force, and most of their actions have been against "wayward" Imperial subjects rather than the enemy without.

Personally, I'd use a quartered color scheme. A halved color scheme makes the left side look totally different from the right; I'm concerned this will lead to misidentification and subsequent "friendly fire" incidents.

Great idea! How will they react to the Codex's author, Roboute Guilliman himself, making revisions to the book or outright ordering them to deviate from it?

I don't know if this count but here are some colour concepts for peoples inspiration (many of them designed from illustrations of knights):

Now with less knight (but still some) inspiration:

Red with left pauldron and arm in yellow. Possible symbol: a red cross on yellow

Silver/polished iron arms, helmet, greaves and feets, the rest (including pauldrons) black. Possible symbol: a white cross on black

Silver/polished iron arms, helmet, greaves and feets, the rest (including pauldrons) white

Blue arms and legs, the rest (including pauldrons) white

Turquoise with silver/polished iron head, green as "secondary" colour

White head, vambraces and hands, the rest green

Red arms, pauldrons and backpack, black greaves and feets, the rest white. Possible symbol: a thistle on red

Black legs, polished copper/bronze head, white vambraces and hands, the rest red.

Split yellow and green, with green head. Possible symbol: a red lion rampant

Arms and legs split/quartered red and blue, the rest (including pauldrons) polished copper/bronze

Polished copper/bronze head, pauldrons and arms, red left leg, the rest blue

Yellow, with blue as the secundary colour

Red vambraces, pauldrons and imperialis, (maybe head), the rest (including hands) black. Possible symbol: a black skull with upward pointing horns

Green with purple head and backpack

Green head, vambraces and legs, the rest red

Black with turquoise-blue as secundary colour

White arms, the rest (incuding pauldrons) green, turquoise/blue as "secundary" colour. Possible symbol: A red bird on green

Green (non dark) arms, the rest (incuding pauldrons) black, silver/polished iron as "secundary" colour.

Red with yellow flames. Possible symbol: a black trident/trident head

Split green and purple

Purple with blue as the secondary colour

Something I have not seen, and I'm actually surpriced by that, is using the symbols for battlefield roles, company, honour markings, and similar from the transfer sheets, as Chapter symbol. And remember that there are more SM transfer sheets then just the Um's, and the SW and Wolfspears have many different symbols. There are also all the transfer sheets to Adeptus Titanicus that have symbols that can be used as Chapter symbol.

I was thinking they'd just be a sort of mustard-yellow, honestly.

So dark yellow for the rigth side, and mustard-yellow for the head and pauldrons?

Personally, I'd use a quartered color scheme. A halved color scheme makes the left side look totally different from the right; I'm concerned this will lead to misidentification and subsequent "friendly fire" incidents.

Since we have many canon Chapters that have split or quartered armour colours, don't it seem to be a problem IU.

Some SW successors concepts, based on HH stuff:

Ice Lords [= after Arn Therod’s title] – suggest having an Ice World as homeworld; likely lots of ice/cold weapons. Colours: white and ice blue, maybe with some other spot colour. For cultural inspirations suggest looking at culture that live in areas with long winter and/or lots glaziers: Intuits, Eskimos, Tibetans, North Siberia, Sami, Native tribes of Northern Canada and Alaska;

Fimbul-wulf [= used as symbol for the SW reconnaissance units, the silent and deadly spirit of ice storms] – based on the name could they be using Viking/Icelandic titles and names; since the Filmbulwinter have been used as a poetic name for the nuclear-winter after a nuclear war could there be some connection there, maybe their homeworld is an ex-War World, now Death World [sub.cat. cold/radiation].

Fell-Hands/Handed [= from Gaigor Fell-Hand and/or Bjorn the Fell-Handed] suggested symbol is a light/ice blue variant of the Red Crosiers’. If the name is chosen in honour of Bjorn the Fell-Handed maybe they style themselves after him and the Chapter-Master is chosen from their Dreadnoughts? Since “fell-handed deeds” sounds like something bad could they see themselves or be used in similar ways as the Minotaurs Chapter and/or having a kind of destroy everything and salt the earth mentality.

Hrimthursar [= from the SW term for their most grim and hateful Dreadnoughts during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.] – suggest having an Ice World as homeworld; likely lots of ice/cold weapons. Colours: white and ice blue, maybe with some other spot colour; based on the name should they be using Viking/Icelandic titles and names, but since the northern Scandinavia is Sami land do I think Sami names/titles and traditions could be used, and/or possibly are they somewhat larger than normal SM:s. Since Hrimthursar original was used for Dreadnoughts could it also mean that the Chapter has many Dreadnoughts.

Eldthursar [= from the SW term for the most violent of their Dreadnoughts during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.] – There homeworld should have some kind of fire theme, maybe: highly volcanic; long dry summers that create yearly forest/plains fires; or maybe their fortress-monastery is a spacestation anchored around a burning gas giant or near a star. Colours: red, yellow and/or orange, maybe in flame patterns; or maybe they have one base colour (black, Fenris grey, bule, etcetera) that’s then covered with flame patterns.   Likely lots of fire, melta and/or plasma weapons; based on the name should they be using Viking/Icelandic titles and names, and/or possibly are they somewhat larger than normal SM:s. Since Eldthursar original was used for Dreadnoughts could it also mean that the Chapter has many Dreadnoughts.

Sons of Muspel [= from the cognomen for the Eldthursar] – see Eldthursar

Sons of Ymir [= from SW’s cognomen for the Hrimthursar] – see Hrimthursar

I have a few more notes on each. I've used the Deathwatch: Rites of Battle Chapter Creation rules to expand the notes a little.

Post them here if you want to

Here is some preliminary work on a Chapter idea my brother and I are rolling around with.  As you may remember, our last collaboration was with on creating a Chapter called the Crimson Fists but still make it work with existing lore.  Well then I ended up moving jobs and states, and everything got put on hold.  Then covid hit and all gaming for us pretty much died.  So here we are just now getting back into it.

We loved the Crimson Fist civil war idea, but it had its problems.  So we decided to go back to the drawing board and see if we could come up with something more original.  And leave that project behind.

We are still working on a Crusading Imperial Fist Chapter.  Void Warfare specialists.  The current idea is 4th Founding Imperial Fists successor chapter.  What's potentially cool here is that we could say that since the veteran Cadre that was assigned to this Chapter were from the Imperial Fists... and the Imperial Fists were veterans of the Fists Exemplars, Excoriators, Executioners, Black Templars... ect that it would be cool to have a Chapter that is potentially influenced by the different burgeoning Chapter ideologies.  We picked three main Chapters Black Templars, Crimson Fists and Executioners... and figured if these were a triangle... this Chapter would be in the center.

So we were thinking more zealous and God-Emperor worshiping like the Templars, and whilst not as codex adherent as the Crimson Fists... they adhere to the 10 companies of 100 space marines with more traditional rank structure.  Throw in a bit of barbaric pragmatism and isolationist tendencies like Fafnir Rann's children and here we are.  To show this in table top terms... we were thinking Bolter Fusillade and Rapid Assault or Whirlwind of Rage.  Chapter Organization is pretty much 10 Battle Companies.  The idea is that each Company is:

1 Veteran Squad

5 Tactical Squads

2 Assault Squads

2 Devastator Squads

I believe this is similar to how the Executioners run their Battle Companies... except they add the Veteran Squad at the expense of one of the Dev Squads.  The Companies are identical because the Chapter could be split up across different Crusades like other Chapters like the Marines Errant are.  And instead of trying to juggle this like some do, this Chapter went for a Black Templar lite approach in which each Fighting Company would have its own native support like Terminators and specialists.

The objective with this is to foster Company rivalries and identities.  Maybe even different Chapter Tactics for different Companies.  We aren't saying its Emperor > Company > Chapter... but its close.  Marines spend their whole lives in the Company they were born too.  Outside of being assigned to the Chapter Masters Honour Guard (recruited from all 10 Companies) or assignment to things such as Deathwatch... the Company is it.

To help push this.  We thought it would be cool to incorporate the Chapter badge with the Company Heraldry.  But Company trim didn't seem like it was enough.  But colored trim isn't the only way Chapters separate Companies:

nzJkiHC.png

And Forgive the shoddy MS Paint work... but I went ahead and did some quick mock ups to see how this works:

aRIGgS9.jpg

z5ML4Dy.jpg

JcBhHNy.jpg

The Stars on the Armor we were just spitballing as Crusade Badges.  Each Crusade the Marine partakes in and lives is another battle-star on the armor.

May seem on the nose... But Chapter Name is Star Fists.

Even came up with a Star Fort/Chapter Monastery:

GOHernN.png

Star Fort Uranoxyst... Skybreaker.  It isn't the Phalanx... But we were going with a unique double Ramilies Star Fort configuration that the Chapter won away from some renegades/traitors in their distant past.

Anyway, this is all rough incomplete preliminary work.  Testing various badge designs... Color schemes (original was grey with the same black and white shoulder pads above... but I think I like the all Black more... even if all black is a little over done.  We were hoping the badge, company heraldry and battle-star badges would push it to more of a unique place.

The new Mark VI miniatures just might get painted this way lol

Some WS ideas, from this Reddit thread White Scars Successor Chapters favor certain aspects of Khan's teachings (so not by me):

"The White Scars and Khan are one of my favourite parts of the lore and I wanted to share just a short and I think underdeveloped part from the White Scars codex about the slight variations of their successor chapters. Since it appears they all take to hone one particular aspect of the original White Scars culture/creed/strategy over others, what are some other kinds you think could exist?

  • A chapter which has a complete disregard for the authority of the Imperium and purposefully keeps themselves away from them, operating out on the fringes of the galaxy. Often the only chapter able and willing to respond to the pleas of isolated human systems or bring down unknown rising xeno empires.

  • A chapter that focuses on the pure joy that comes from savage combat. They love making jokes, laughing and seem pretty human to speak to. Except this is brought up to 11 when they carve through their enemies with blood lust and primal rage. Suddenly their pranks and quips become cruel and malicious...

  • A chapter that even compared to other white scars are purely speed focused. They jump from one battle to another without saying hi or bye but leaving tire tracks, exhaust fumes and wrecked enemy armies. They purposefully never stick around for anything resembling a long attrition based battle but always make a reminder on a very long list to swing back around. Indeed, their crusading fleet take large Segmentum wide turns to collect the head of a warlord (or their heir) decades or hundreds of years after the originally first engagement."

[...]

"I've had this idea for a while: a successor chapter inherited one of the first copies of the Codex Astartes, this one with the annotations and margin notes of their primarch. By his word, they live and die, and of the Khan's successors, they have the longest lists of siege victories. The chapter's fortress-monastery resides on the moon of a gas giant within the system of a forge world. Their close association to the mechanicum is necessary, as this chapter inherited most of the dreadnoughts remaining to the legion during its disbanding. They focus not on speed or accuracy so much as tactics and timing. A raging dreadnought with a death wish teleporting into a location makes for a great distraction. The only major difference between their chapter organization and the Codex Astartes is that the first company is composed entirely of dreadnoughts and techmarines, and they are only deployed in full force against fortified locations in conjunction with at least two other companies."

Some short Chapter concepts:

Deep Rangers

Green helmet, pauldrons and backpack, the rest black.

Homeworld is an underground death world, filed with rakghoules, cannibalistic abhumans, and  dangerous native lifeforms

Tunnel fighters, raiders, usually only fight in small numbers

Have some kind of group of dual wielding sword masters

Hipparki Argent

A “cavalry” Chapter, lots of bikes and other fast attack units

Culture based on antique Macedonia + near space

Colours are white as main colour with red and gold as “secondary” (based on a depiction of Alexander the Great on horseback)

(maybe WS successors but could be of other gene-lines)

Paladins of the Blood

Red head, backpack and arms, the rest (including pauldrons) saturated gold

Suffer from a Hyper-stimulated Omophagea giving them a need to partake of the flesh of a fallen enemy when given opportunity.

Suffer from cosmetic mutations that gives them grey skin and a ghoulish appearance.

Even if they can keep their Omophagea need in check, do they ritually consume those foes they see as worthy (tainted meat, e.g. Warp mutated, is ignored for this). They also do flesh eating displays in front of the enemy to terrorise them

Finish and Russian names

(can be BA successors but don't need to be)

Ebon Star Chapter

WS Successors

Bone white pauldrons, left leg blue, the rest grey. Lots of bone-/fang-/horn-based bling.

Suffer from a Hyper-stimulated Omophagea giving them a need to partake of the flesh of a fallen enemy when given opportunity.

Barbarians in their culture and ways

Feral World names

Got some other ideas to run past you.  Right after I posted my concept for the Star Fists above... my brother and I decided to change directions a bit and I wanted to run it past you.  So, we all know that the Fist Exemplars were a Chapter founded by Fists who actually embraced the Codex Astartes before Rogal Dorn relented.  But what about the opposite?  What if there was a Ultramarine Successor that didn't agree with Guilliman's reforms?  We are thinking about old Fashioned War Borne who have an axe to grind with their Father... and did not believe his intentions were pure with the Unremembered Empire.  My brother want's contention, and some chapters like the Black Consuls might take offense to a Ultramarine Chapter that decided the Codex wasn't the best thing since sliced bread.

As you know, there were at least two Chapters above Calth that got to witness the full horrors of the Word Bearers betrayal.  The Hawks and the Eagles.  These were Thunderhawk and Breacher specialist Chapters of the Legion that were one of the few Chapters to actually specialize due to various reasons.  So we can keep the crusading void-borne specialist idea of the Star Fists... but from Guilliman's blood instead.  So how does this look in relation to the Star Fists above?  I present the Star Hawks (or I present the potential Idea):

And now some rough ideas of what we were thinking... incorporating the things we liked about the Star Fists:

Here are a list of concepts for a chapter based on The Murders in the Rue Morgue not all of them go togheter:
- Rue Morgue = a) homeworld is a cemetery-world;

c) a or b but the area/world is red;
d) red armour
- The orangutang = a) Specialize in tracking, fighting and killing or capturing jokarru;
b ) they suffer from a cosmetic mutation that makes their hair orange and give them ape-ish features;
c) they have jokarru captured/walking around free in their fortress-monastery making repairs and modifications;
d) train a lot in vertical movement;
e) brow-red-orange armour;
- Auguste Dupin & narrator = a) the battle-brothers are trained in detective work;
b ) solo battle-brothers are followed by a non-SM that assist them in ways;

Detective Marines. That sounds awesome. No idea how they would come about, but it would be cool. My initial thoughts were Mentor esq, being attached to other chapters for MP (Military Police) esq duties, and I am certain the Inquisition would love being able to call upon them.

Or maybe as some kind of hunters, with them hunting individual/smaller threats to an area that have been deemed not just elusive but also notable/big enough threats to the areas stability to warrent a battle-brother or more to hunt them. And that way protecting the stability in the sector/subsector they have their homeworld in

A concept for early founding Chapters:

* 2nd founding chapter created from Emperor-loyal members of traitor Legion that believes that it was their Legion ways and culture that was the reason to why their Primarch/Legion fell and therefore decided to change their ways into something more or less opposite.

* 2nd founding chapter created from gene-seed from a Legion that lost their Primarch during the Heresy that believes that it was their ways and culture that was the reason to why their Primarch died and therefore decided to change their ways into something more or less opposite.

* 3rd/4th founding chapter created from gene-seed from a Legion that lost their Primarch after the Heresy that believes that it was their ways and culture that was the reason to why their Primarch died/disappeared and therefore decided to change their ways into something more or less opposite.

What if there was a Ultramarine Successor that didn't agree with Guilliman's reforms?

Interesting ideas. How about a Successor Chapter of Ultramarines who opposed their Primarch's plan to separate the Space Marine Legions into Chapters, and sided with Rogal Dorn, believing the Imperial Fists Primarch was more loyal to the Emperor and His ideals than Guilliman, and/or sharing Dorn's belief this diffusion of power would actually weaken the Imperium at a critical time? The Ultramarine dissenters' Chapter tactics may resemble that of the Black Templars, not only due to their similar circumstances (both Chapters are fleet-based), but due to close relations between the dissenters and the Imperial Fists; the dissenters may have even joined the VII Legion's siege of the Eternal Fortress, supporting Dorn's attempt to bring Perturabo to justice.

White armor looks fine when matched to the black-and-white Chapter symbol, not with the black-and-gray Chapter symbol; the latter will look better when matched to gray armor.

Is the black-and-gray Chapter symbol a variant for the Chapter elite's use, e.g., Honor Guards, Terminators, Vanguard and Sternguard Vets?

Thanks Bjorn!

What you described is exactly what we were thinking.  We know that there was some internal contention between those Ultramarines who were actually on Calth and those that were not.  Couple this with the idea that not every Ultramarine believed dividing the legions was a good idea.  And we could say the command element of this group were all Terran Warborne who weren't enamored with the Ultramar concept to begin with.  So we have a group here that aren't really considered true Ultramarines anyway and they were a specialized group in a legion of warriors know for being general purpose... when they show themselves as dissenters in Guilliman's codex from his own bloodline... there may be no love lost here.  And out of lore... we know some Ultramarines actually aren't Ultramarines... so maybe these guys are or aren't... we will never know.  I don't think these guys are getting the Primogenitor moniker... and it may have been a situation of "Get the hell out of here and don't come back".

And I like the idea of this group being all onboard the Dorn train during the Scouring.  And as you say, it would a perfect place for them to ape some Fisty things on top of their own breacher centric heritage in the 13th Legion.  Is there anyway that we could say these guys even dared to traverse the ruin storm (maybe after it was weakened) and made it to at least partake in the solar war?  Just a thought.  The Battle of Terra would be a hell of a bonding moment and where this group really develops a respect for Dorn.  Just spitballing.  The Scouring is a sure deal moving forward.

Each Company is a Battle-Company.  Which can be sent on its own crusade and have its own native veteran and specialist elements.  Similar to a Black Templars Fighting Company.  So not quite Black Templars... but definitely even more so than say the Marines Errant or the Eagle Warriors.

The Black and Gray was just an alternate scheme idea.  I thought the gray and black popped against the all white armor.  But I like the black and white heraldry on the shoulder pad as well.

I even have concepts of that (I know the eagle is facing the wrong direction lol... I just didnt feel like correcting it... since this is just spitballing ideas at this point):

In fact its the Scouring era that I am planning on painting up.  So the new Mark VI Marines are the target look.  If we get Indomitus Termies in a new scale it would be perfect!

- Auguste Dupin & narrator = a) the battle-brothers are trained in detective work;
b ) solo battle-brothers are followed by a non-SM that assist them in ways;
c) hunter/trackers that species in trap laying/ambushes;
d) help Adeptus Arbites
- French names

Detective Marines. That sounds awesome. No idea how they would come about, but it would be cool. My initial thoughts were Mentor esq, being attached to other chapters for MP (Military Police) esq duties, and I am certain the Inquisition would love being able to call upon them.

Or maybe as some kind of hunters, with them hunting individual/smaller threats to an area that have been deemed not just elusive but also notable/big enough threats to the areas stability to warrent a battle-brother or more to hunt them. And that way protecting the stability in the sector/subsector they have their homeworld in

Recruitment source: Children of Enforcer families? A planet like Necromunda. If the 8th Necromunda regiment exists, then surely we could get a Space Marine Chapter to recruit from a similar planet. The Enforcers are all from the planets 'Nobles', which makes them perfect candidates. The Chapter then recruits from those same families

Based on that Aleister Crowley's Golden Dawn name was Frater Perdurabo, what about a Iron Warriors successor (or a CSM warband) based on Golden Dawn (the real one, the image they presented of themself, or the pop-cultural one).

Suggested name: the Moon Children
