Regarding a chapter symbol and what to use (that don't need you to be Golden Demon material) so do the HH Legions transfer sheets have many symbols that are not the main Legion symbol and that have not been used by any established chapter. And the standard transfer sheet that comes with both the The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness box and Legion Cataphractii Praetor & Chaplain Consul and the smaller variant that comes with MKIV Tactical Squad have lots of moons, raptor heads, and un-encircled fists that can be used. Even the Eye of Horus could be used if you cut of the continuation of the pupil, and the IF standard one will be a bit different if placed it upside down.

Gamiel present a number of excellent ideas and points regarding easy symbols you can co-opt into creating your Chapter's emblem/symbol!

Don't forget you can also snip and trim decals (very delicately) using a very sharp, fine edged hobby knife to help add more unique designs. A classic of this is to cut off the stylized wings on the Dark Angels' symbol. Or you could even have this utilised with the Deathwing symbol, to present a Chapter or Warband that are known as the "Sword Breakers", or a name to that effect.

The decals are also great practice as designs to paint over, with a perfect guide. I did this to paint a silver wolf's head for the Shadow Wolves chapter a long, long time ago.

DESERT HAWKS

Symbol: a raptor/raptor’s head* on light blue.

* suggest using the rapture head pauldron from the Deathwatch veterans kit, or the raptor’s head transfers from the HH Ultramarine Legion transfer sheet

Colours: beige-white, with left pauldron light blue with their chapter symbol on.

Lots of sashes, robes, and similar (preferably in white/white-ish), gold coin bling (use the Iron Golem’s coin bling/mail and paint them gold).

Inspirations: Bedouins, desert Arabs

Warfare: Preferer hit-and-run attacks, ambushes, raids, stalking the target (preferably in such way that the target can see them but not really attack), taking out supplies, taking out supply trains. Possibly at the cost of other ways of warfare, or they could be Codex following jack-of-all-trades, but they just prefer to do it that way

My take. I love this color combo.

Colours also do a lot here are many "name, colours and symbol"-only chapters that reuses established the Legions symbols, a well known symbol will look a bit different if the armour it's placed on is different colour then the Legion that it belongs to's colour. What about the Thousnad Sons symbol on green, or the Alpha Legion hydra on white? Ad to that upgrade stuff that don't fit the steriotype picture of that Legion and nobody can (rightfully) complain.

Adeptus Titanicus have their own transfer sheets with symbols that can be used for chapter symbol, and there are some stand alone transfer sheets that you don't need to by a kit for to get.

There is also the transfer sheet that you get with the Chaos Space Marines box (and possibly others, but I don't know which) which transfears can all (that do not show the Chaos-star) be reused with any different colours than the Chaos Legion it should belonged to for a loyalist chapter, just look at the Covenant of Fire

Would like to ad the Thatos Pattern Hab Modules Transfer Sheet to the list, I have seen one fan chapter that uses the Helmawr symbol transfear for their chapter symbol

Purity of Man

“While all Chapters detest mutation in all its forms, some take their values to such an extent that they believe that the Space Marines alone are the true inheritors of the Emperor, that they were made according to his perfect vision and that mere mortals (everyone else) are utterly inferior. Some carry this notion through to a rejection of artificial augmetics, preferring death to the dishonour of concealing weakness with machine implants and totally abhor the practise of imprisoning a fallen warrior in the sarcophagus of a Dreadnought.”

1. Don’t use Dreadnoughts, instead those that are too wounded to continue combat service but still won’t die are allowed to heal and serve as teachers and mentors for aspirants, given positions of leadership aboard the Chapter’s ship, and/or similar.

2. A Chapter that doesn't replace their damages with cybernetics if it’s possible for the damage area to heal or be replaced with bionics.

3. A Chapter that holds abhumans in great contempt.

4. Have a great hatred toward mutants. They will never knowingly come to the help of sanctioned mutants fighting for the Imperium and will possibly kill them on sight.

5. Have a great hatred toward Genestealers because of their corruption of the holy standard human genotype.

6. The Chapter is openly hostile toward mutants, abhumans and similar, no matter how loyal they are.

7. Consider themselves, and other SM, impure because they as transhumans have abounded the holy standard human genotype.

8. The Chapter feels great contempt, if not openly hostility, toward humans with too much cybernetics.

9. Distrust the Magi Biologis of the Adeptus Mechanicus and are constantly on the lookout for information that will prove their suspicions. Possibly this distrust makes them unwilling to help or fight together with members of the Magi Biologis, or they try to constantly be/fight near them so they can monitor them.

10. A Chapter that have strained relations with the Adeptus Mechanicus.

11. When in conflict areas the Chapter helps out with taking care and healing of wounded humans when they have free time and maybe even stay after the conflict have ended to help the people. Possibly do they kill or castrate any survivors they deem unfit to spread their genes.

12. Consider any Imperial force that don’t follow the holy standard human genotype to be nothing but sacrificial and expandable units, that includes Space Marines.

13. Have a great hatred toward Fabius Bile and his students because of their corruption of the holy standard human genotype.

14. The Librarians of the Chapter take no positions of command.

15. The techmarines of the Chapter take no positions of command.

16. The Chapter have several times been charged with hunting down and destroying renegade Abhuman IG Regiments and cleansing the regiments homeworld.

17. The Chapter have several times been charged by the Lords of Terra with hunting down and destroying renegade Adeptus Mechanicus forces.

18. A Chapter that has an unusual high amount of Apothecary.

19. A Chapter that’s obsessed with keeping their gene-seed pure. Possibly they react condescending or even hostile toward Chapters they know have flaws or mutations in their gene-seed (like the Imperial Fist, the Black Dragons, and the Sons of Antaeus), or even anybody they consider impure.

20. Keep the great records of their recruitment-/homeworld’s populations’ genes and bloodlines, so no impurities will find their way in and the ones that do are quickly found.

21. A Chapter that don’t replace their damages with cybernetics if it’s possible for the damage area to heal or be replaced with bionics. They also offer this to their serfs, and possibly to the population of their homeworld.

22. A Chapter that hold humans with large amounts of cybernetics (like tech-priests) in great contempt.

23. Many of the Chapter’s serfs form genuine bonds of friendship and camaraderie with their masters.

24. Their Dreadnoughts are piloted by those that have gravely dishonoured themselves and/or the Chapter as punishment and as way to make certain that they don’t die easily on their path toward redemption.

25. The Chapter treats its serfs fairly, as important if still mortal extensions of the Chapter.

26. They are harshly intolerant when they encounter less altruistic behaviour - greed, selfishness, corruption - on Imperial worlds. Possibly putting them to the sword if they find them wanting, no matter their influence.

27.Have a great contempt toward abhumans. They will never knowingly come to the help of sanctioned abhumans fighting for the Imperium and will possibly kill them on sight.

28. Work closely with Magi Biologis of the Adeptus Mechanicus to make certain that the holy standard human genotype don’t deviate too far.

29. Have close ties to certain Ecclesiarchal sects, to which the "perfect form of Man" (of which the Emperor is the best example) is a subject of worship.
30. Never take command in any conflict zone where there is a human commander.
31. Believe they as transhumans have lost true human insight and the Chapters officers all surround themselves with human advisors.
32. A Chapter that try to protect agricultural lands and maybe even stay after the conflict have ended to help the people rebuild their agriculture. The human body can withstand much but the lack of food for too long is not one.
33. The Chapter’s ships, fortresses, vehicles, and weapons have any kind of radioactive or Warp-based area heavily shielded, and any serf working near those areas are given high-class protective equipment. All to prevent possible corruptions of their form or genes.
34. While the Chapter uses cybernetics to replace lost bodyparts, are those crafted in such way to hide their artificiality.
35. Have a contempt toward those that don’t prevent pollutions or have humans working/living in areas with damaging levels of radiation/pollutions without enough protections since those things can damage not just the bodies of those there but also coming generations genetically.
36. Are unusually concerned with civilian casualties compared to most other Space Marines and believe that one of their most important duties is to protect the lives of the Emperor of Mankind's pure human subjects whenever and wherever possible.
37. Work closely with the Orders Famulous to keep the Imperium’s nobilities’ gene-lines pure and to find fitting aspirants.
38. Work closely with the Orders Hospitaller to protect the holy standard human genotype.
39. Work closely with the Officio Medicae to protect the holy standard human genotype.
40. Don’t leave any warzone they have helped pacify until they have helped rebuilt all that’s needed for the population to survive.
41. Has a very strong culture of self-sacrifice toward humans.
42. Battle-brothers of the Chapter go to great lengths to save any child in the conflict area they are deployed.
43. Dispices the use of rad-, chem- and other weapons that will damages the holy standard human gene-structure of those that are near or even will be in the area in later time. Possibly will come to blows with those that use those kind of weapons as anything but last resort.
44. If they find areas where radiation is not enough shielded and/or marked out for danger they will, ones their main mission is done, return and make certain that proper shielding and warnings is crafted. Possibly also to punish those that had allowed this to go on.

45. Battle-brother continues to interact with their families and the people of their homeworld after their transformation into Space Marines.

fourth:

Fifth:

Reverse the Primarch

“The Chapter holds the Primarch of its Progenitor at the centre of its belief system, venerating him above all others. Although the Chapter worships the Emperor as the ultimate creator of the Legions and themselves, it is towards the Primarch that the bulk of its devotions are turned. Mighty statues of the Primarch grace the Chapter’s halls and his words are taught and read by every Battle-Brother.”

1. Each battle-brother carries a portable shrine with them where they honour their Primarch.

2. The Chapter’s Chaplains drink the mixed blood of gathered battle-brothers to receive visions of guidance from the Primarch.

3. The Chapter is also known for its extreme monastic nature, constantly studying the teachings of their Primarch if known. It’s likely that their vehicles and armour are usually covered in illuminated religious texts extracted from tomes sacred to the Adeptus Astartes.

4. The Chapter’s battle-brothers all try to make regular pilgrimages to the Shrine of the Primarch on his homeworld/similar.

5. Each battle-brother has to partake in a pilgrimage to at least one place where it’s known (without any doubt) that their Primarch was before rising in rank to the next Company. This means that a first company member have been to ten places where their Primarch was, likely the place for the pilgrimage before joining the 1:th Company is their Primarch’s homeworld.

6. The Chapter guards one of the grand sites where their Primarch walked during his life.

7. Speak mostly in quotes from the writings of their Primarch.

8. The Chapter is also known for its extreme monastic nature, constantly studying the teachings of their Primarch.

9. Gene-seed is the Primarch’s gift to his sons, and the chapter work harder than most to prevent its loss.

10. The chapter has a special hatred for those that fell their gene-father and specialise in hunting and fighting those.

This one is a bit shorter since each of the Primarchs are different so in practice you would need a tabell for each of the loyal primarchs (and maybe for some traitor ones for those that want traitor successors and whose primarchs could be explained as being tricked/mind-controlled into their fall - e.g. Fulgrim).

A thought I got some time ago about the Flesh Eaters, that their name could be seen as something similar to the Yeomen Warders’ cognomen Beefeaters. That their name is a reference to them being the kind of elite that gets served flesh instead of vegetable stew or nutrient paste. That they are called Flesh Eaters instead of Meat or Beef Eaters is because can be justified with mistranslations, the standard meaning of flesh having moved throughout the millennia, or similar. And both have red as main colour, and some white details.

So I would like to suggest presenting Flesh Eaters as Beefeaters-ish, with very English names and manners. Mine all the strange rituals we know the UK Parliament and crown have (we saw some of them last week during the funeral) for ideas.

I think such a Chapter will have close ties to the Ecclesiarchy or certain Ecclesiarchal sects, to which the "perfect form of Man" (of which the Emperor is the best example) is a subject of worship. They'll be VERY useful in any conflict with "deviants" like the AdMech and others who "do not worship the God-Emperor in the correct manner," and/or those who "do not give the God-Emperor the honor and respect that is His due," (i.e., do not donate enough to the local church).

The Chaplaincy/Reclusiam will likely have a greater than usual influence upon the Chapter. I won't be surprised if the Reclusiam assigns Justiciars to Companies to serve as pseudo-Inquisitors, monitoring their brothers-in-arms for heretical thoughts and behavior.

The Horus Heresy books have given the White Scars lots of names of groups within the Legion and old cognomens. None which have clear counterparts to any of the current known WS successors, or among successors of unknown lineage to my understanding.
This is a gold mine for anybody that wants inspiration for a WS successor.

Among those new names are the names of their chapters (brotherhoods) : Brotherhood of the... : Blue Hawk, Night's Star, Golden Star, Sable Wolf, Broken Shield, Great Eye, Golden Path, Pennant Spear, Hunter's Star, Dawn Sky, Black Axe, and Summer Lightning.

The Blue Hawk, Golden Star, Sable Wolf, and Black Axe was given symbols and you can find those symbols in red, gold and white on their HH transfer sheet (which is strange since in the book showing those brotherhoods the Blue Hawk's symbol is blue, and Sable Wolf's and Black Axe's are black but they don't appear in those colours on the sheet). If you (or anybody else) want to do a chapter based on the Sable Wolf Brotherhood could you just use the Space Wolf symbol, and any kind of raptor symbol for a chapter based on the Blue Hawk Brotherhood.

The HH WS also had some specialist formations with cool names that could become chapter names (like the Ultra's Nemesis chapter): the Karaoghlanlar a.k.a. the Dark Sons of Death, the WS Destroyers that answered directly to the Council of Seers. They were deployed in combat when the utter annihilation of the enemy was required, not just physically, but also, through ritual Chogorian rites, spiritually. as well as for certain ritual roles in the wake of key campaigns.
The Burgediin Sarhvu, a.k.a. the Falcon's Claws, that served as hunters and forward scouts, experts in survival and the quiet elimination of enemy commanders. And outside of combat acted as the keepers of those servo-raptors maintained by many brotherhoods as both symbols of their ancient heritage and battlefield reconnaissance assets.

There is also that before the discovery of Jaghatai was the V:th Legion known as the Star Hunters, and was divided into Pioneer Companies. We know of the cognomen of five of them - Soul Hunters, Grey Ghosts, Void Devils, Lions of Thapsis, and The Enders - with the symbol of the last three also known.
None of the groups I have mentioned are clear counterparts to any of the current known WS successors, or successors of unknown lineage to my understanding.

If you want to go real retro did the 1988 ‘Chapter Approved - The Book of the Astronomican’ supplement book have a presentation of the WS where they are very different from their current incarnation. In that presentation it’s mentioned that a unique formation within the Chapter are the “Souldrinkers”, veterans that excel in close combat and armed with power-swords and refractor fields. And another formation are the jump-pack equipped “Cobra Squads”.
Now there is already a “Soul Drinkers” chapter out there but since we know that there are many chapters that have more or less the same name, colours, and/or symbol as other chapters, so maybe there is also a chapter called Souldrinkers out there.

There is also Jaghatai Khan's cognomen "the Warhawk", and the names of his weapons "White Tiger" power-dao and  "Storm's Voice" archaeotech pistol, and his power-armour "Wildfire Panoply" that can all be used as inspiration for chapter names,

Something I just got the idea for is a WS successor that are swashbuckling - inspired by Trois Mousquetaires, Errol Flynn characters, Fandral the Dashing (Marvel), and such - that have green as their main colour - partly because that's the colour of Fandral and Flynn's Robin Hood, partly because that's a colour not associated with the WS or their successors. The swords used by the Sanguinary PriestBlood Knights and Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares can all be used to creat chain-/powerrapiers, now I just need suggestion on heads with the propper grooming - any suggestions? This idea don't really need to be a WS successor but I want that since then I can creat a small band of them to have with my Sons of Jaghatai, and I like the idea of more successors that are shown to be very different from daddy. Re. names have I not decided on anything yet, there are all the musketeers, Flynn characters and Fandral that I could nod toward, or maybe nod toward Torin the Wayfarer who I think was Bill King's wink toward Fandral (and could have functioned as the firstborn that helped train/lead the Primaris that become the founding core of the chapter, if Ultima founded). Any thoughts or suggestion?

And as allways with this thread, if anybody wants to use any of those ideas, or all of it, feel free.

I have done some concepts for the possible chapter cults results, and since they are a bit many do I not plan to post them in one go but one at a time, with some spece inbetween. We start fit the first result on the list:

"Death cult

The Chapter’s beliefs are centred not on one particular figure, but on the more abstract notion of death itself. As the so called “Angels of Death,” the Space Marines’ very existence is defined by their ability to slay their foes. While Space Marines are extremely long-lived, the vast majority die in battle and this Chapter embraces the fact. Chapters that follow this belief system to an extreme, adorning themselves in all manner of deathly fetishes and even partaking of gristly trophy taking.”

My concepts are behind spoliers since it's a bit long list

And now un to the sixth:

Totem Creature
“Many Chapters have as their symbol some form of animal, either an actual creature or one from mythology. Many aspire to the qualities displayed by the creature, displaying related motifs in their livery and titles. Some even utilise tactics and weapons inspired by the manner in which their totem creature fights or hunts. This is certainly the case with the Salamanders Chapter, who favour flame-effect weapons in imitation of their namesake.
The Battle-Brothers of the Space Sharks Chapter fi le their teeth to sharp points to replicate those of their own totem creature.”

Maybe there is a sixth based on the blood moon and/or the blue moon, or maybe there are seven companies.

Some thoughts regarding the Cursed Founding: I want to point out that while most of the known chapter of that founding have rather easily noted problem - Sons of Antaeus and Black Dragons with their physical mutations, the Minotaurs had some real psychological issues (they seems to have gotten better), and the Flame Falcons spontaneous immolation is something that's hard to not call unnatural even for 40k's pulpy understanding of science – do for example Fire Hawks and Lamenters lack any such tell, and the Lamenters did even for a long time not suffer from the Blood Angels Flaw (or did so in a notably weakened form), but instead they are both known for being notably unlucky (but at the same time, since both of them are still alive and not declared renegade could it be said that they are not as unlucky as those chapters that have been destroyed or declared Excommunicate Traitoris). With this presentation I’m trying to say that even if a chapter is from the Cursed Founding don’t it need to have something that rather easily say that there is a problem with its members. But on the other hand, if you want a chapter with some real mutations that would be hard to explain appearing “naturally” is being from the Cursed Founding one of the easiest ways to justify it since there was absolutely some kind of gene-seed experimentations going on with at least some of the chapters (if not all) from that founding.

I got this idé for a chapter from the Cursed Founding that doesn't have any known problems at all but know that they are from the Cursed Founding with what that usually entail. And to prevent the curse from affecting them do they constantly do warding and cleansing rituals and are bedecked with protecting markings and talismans.

I recently had an idea for a 'Space Kiwis' chapter (Kiwi the bird not the fruit), a flightless bird for a chapter on bikes; of course a White Scars successor

Do you have any ideas how to represent their "kiwiness"?

B.t.w. saying that a bike preferring chapter is of course of WS lineage is stereotyping.

In terms of flightless bird options, there's a few nasty predator birds that are flightless. The Cassowary is certainly one evil big blighter that's vicious. On the stereotyping, we do see a lot of that in 40K even from GW itself, but it certainly could be linked to the White Scars via Jaghatai Khan's nickname of the "Warhawk" etc and utilising birds for the hunt and such.

But another biker oriented Chapter I remember from waaaay back in 4th Ed is the Red Templars, which are descendants of the Black Templars if I recall rightly.

Now on the Cursed Chapter trying to ward off the inevitable, that presents a lot of options for character and Chapter structure, whether it be akin to the Red Scorpions' 'purity above all' with them having lots of Apothecaries to track for any sign of impurity or mutation. Another option is reliance on purity through spirit and faith in the Emperor, so you could have a Chaplain oriented one that might be extremely zealous in its rites that must be performed to prevent ill-tidings for the break of tradition or ceremony. Lots of character potential there that would fit oh so well in the barmy grimdark of 40K.

Do you have any ideas how to represent their "kiwiness"?

It was nothing to do with the kiwiness, but with the flightless bird aspect. Maneovering as a flock of birds, this elegant wave upon the battlefield.

I only chose Kiwi to represent the flightless bird because the Genus name was slightly bearable to say Astra Apteryx, Space Kiwis

But by that logic do the Angels Encarmine have a World Eaters connection since Angron was known as the Red Angel and both like close combat.

But also lot of things from GW that goes against the stereotypes.

On part 1: No, it's not a set rule and law; just an option you could use as reasoning.

On part 2: Yes that is also true, it's all that question of what you wish to do, using the ingredients made available through potentials. :)

Colours also do a lot here. There are many "name, colours and symbol"-only chapters that reuses established the Legions symbols, a well known symbol will look a bit different if the armour it's placed on is different colour then the Legion that it belongs to's colour.

There is also the transfer sheets for the Eldars, the AoS' Dark Elves, and the Imperial Knight 'sheet have some symbols that are small enought for a pauldron

Something I plan to do but want to share: I am thinking of using Night Lords heads (have some of the old CSM ones), and maybe shoulderpads, togheter with AoS' Lizardmen bits to creat a Camazotz themed chapter. What do people think could be fitting names for such a chapter? Camazotz means "death bat" in the Kʼicheʼ language you could just go with 'Death Bats', but I feel like there should be more possible names but can't come up with any. Suggestions?

Also, do people any idea about fitting colours?

Now that's definitely a good seam for some unique designs and ideas for building a Chapter!

In terms of bat, one of the more obvious options is to utilise the animal order for Bat, Chiroptera. So a few options could be:

Sons of Chiroptera
Chiropteran Blades

Add in Latin for death or doom, and you could have Chiroptera Mors or Malum.

Other options can be to utilise parts of the bat, such as the wings or fangs mixed with a unique name or colour term (eg Shadow Wings / Shadow Fangs).

<EDIT> Forgot to add colours on this. So you can either go down the deep or greyish brown route to match the fur of bats, or you can also play in the colours of dusk and night with a mix of deep red for blood and fangs being emphasized. Depends if you want full on stealth or a bit of fear inducing blood inclusion.

Hope that helps,

Cambrius
