Solution Brother Christopher Posted July 30 Solution Share Posted July 30 Yeah, that's definitely cool. I mean, the structure has already been 'good enough' without the fine details but you're taking it to another level. For whatever reason, I really like the use of real nuts - they work very well with the valves in this scale. bloodhound23
I'll probably do some more today, but if I don't, here's an update: Using my modular banding system (novice Engineseer here) I blocked in and notched off this little wall for some electronics. This little paper clip and hole punch railing thing will be a mount for the data slate from the Ironstrider kit, and to its right and up a bit I'll mount the vox attachment from the Skitarii box to look like a electrical panel. The rest of a paperclip will provide some conduit and will curve back down into the bottom of the floating cardstock wall, and I'll use some guitar string or something to connect from the back of the dataslate over to the side of the vox bit (as electrical box). Hopefully that will all make sense if I post an update later . Thanks everyone for looking and providing comments. Unless I want to commit to some railings (which could be removeable and done later), this should be it for the building phase on this one. I ended up having way too much fun doing fiddly stuff with these fine details and trying to come up with ways to get the GW bits to fit in naturally. I think we might even have good enough weather for me to use some spray cans this weekend thanks to a cold snap. bloodhound23
Been working on this thing for so long I forgot that I don't have nearly enough human-sized infantry to actually give it much of a context. It's almost done, I just needed a break while I wait for fall. Many of you have probably also been dealing with the heat/humidity as well, and you have my deepest sympathies . Anyway- this, the Skitarii, and the water rationing station are all part of a big project I've been brainstorming (and you can see link in my bio) for a techno-feudal frontier world out in Segmentum Pacificus called Dalarna. Rediscovered during the Macharian Crusade with a roughly-feudal level of development, it features warring city-states and, of course, some precious mineral that has made it a target for the Ad Mech's mining interests. A few centuries later, enough time has passed that we have a melting pot of whatever kind of fun anachronisms I want to put in there. Here's a spotter in one of the Dalarnan Husgard regiments, pledged to one (TBD) of the noble houses who rule the constantly vying regional dukedoms ruled by the various city-states. There are a few versions of Freeguild/Guard kitbashes going around the web, but this one was largely inspired by a model built by @the_technoarchaeologist on IG. I really need to decide on factions/paint schemes for them and the Skitarii before I go to prime them, likely in October. Taking suggestions, as always. All of the ideas everyone has offered has been great inspiration for me to keep moving, so much appreciated. Since there will canonically be more than a few city-states, I can be pretty loose and have a few different schemes and just pick one for this particular squad. I am trying to avoid red/black since we'll have some Mechanicus and Imperial Agents involved and I'll need some variety. Grenade/pouch is from Solar Auxilia kit. bloodhound23
Finally, the "Water Meter"! Ironstrider dataslate, Skitarii vox backpack, garden wire, copper and steel wire from an old Apple charging cable, chipboard using a hole punch, strategically cut paperclip curves. Think this project is done except for sealing and spraying, which I'll do in the fall since it keeps raining/steaming around here. bloodhound23
Quick build for fall (spraying season)! Great kit, and it went together like a breeze. Wish these were in production. Kinda want to DIY scaffolding for it, but I’ll probably just spray this one ASAP and paint as is. bloodhound23
Forgot that I built this little shed/fallout shelter frame for this hatch bit from the old Ryza Ruins kit. I try to prime something that I don't care too much about screwing up every batch, and this time it ended up being this little hatch. I painted this and the plasma generator the same way so far: primed Chaos Black and drybrushed Mournfang Brown. I'll drybrush with Necron Compound, and then I'll stipple in whatever main color before I do some sponging and washes, then some Typhus Corrosion. Will probably end up using a cooler green for the plasma generator, we'll see. hauteclere, Dr_Ruminahui, Firedrake Cordova and 1 other 3 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/373036-violent-gods-3rd-return-to-the-hobbys-the-charm-updated-10092025/page/8/#findComment-6131586 Share on other sites

Tallarn Commander
I really like the terrain piece! I never thought to use Mournfang Brown over dry-brushed metal to create a weathered appearance. bloodhound23
Update on hatch: Drybrushed Necron Compound, stippled Averland Sunset, washed with Strong Tone/Reikland/Lahmian, then strategically for some beginnings of some rust streaking, followed by some sponging of Rhinox Hide. Brass done with Runelord Brass/Runefang Steel. Still needs proper streaking, rust, verdigris for the brass, some mildew stains, more sponging. The icon/crank look a little blown out from the lighting, will try to create a little more contrast there, though. Ratling Grime will probably work as a liner. I'm pretty happy with it but I wanted to give a few more techniques a go on a small scale before I try them on something bigger. Mostly ways of adding textures. I think other than needing a bit of orange and some green on the brass it doesn't need much else (at least in terms of colors). But I might try and get to that level with a few different strategies at a small scale to get some practice in. Gonna try and stick to the same method I used for the Aquila lander a few pages back, which I was pretty happy with. Fortunately I made notes on all the steps Firedrake Cordova 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/373036-violent-gods-3rd-return-to-the-hobbys-the-charm-updated-10092025/page/8/#findComment-6132527 Share on other sites
bloodhound23
Don't look too close! I probably did too much, and there's still some tide marks to be cleaned up. But I tried to make the staining and other effects match what I had done even after I put down a little too much Typhus Corrosion, so that was it's own challenge. bloodhound23
Final version I think, until I get some powders for everything, and then I'll dust a bit on the very bottom. bloodhound23
Starting to realize I've been enjoying terrain so much because I build it guilt-free (whereas I hem and haw over how to kitbash infantry) and then paint it in whatever scheme I decide and never worry about anything matching it ever again. I'll have to get over that to get more infantry done. That being said, here's some more WIP terrain: phandaal, Heraclite, Firedrake Cordova and 6 others 4 5 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/373036-violent-gods-3rd-return-to-the-hobbys-the-charm-updated-10092025/page/8/#findComment-6135082 Share on other sites

The wear on the paint is really nicely done Thanks, it's been quite the slog stippling a few coats (layer paint problems) into every recess while trying to avoid any edge. But I want it to look pretty destroyed, so I'll probably do some sponging to fill in some of the edges in spots to make it look less like I've been intentionally avoiding the edges—which looks a little uncanny as is. But I do love the chipped and muted dystopian green on this one. Brother Christopher
It's looking great. And I expect that despite the time investment, it was a blast to paint. The weathered look is great so far. Based on the photo, I don't get any uncanny vibes. But if you feel like it needs more work, go for it. I'm sure you'll get it right. Did you consider adding some rust streaks at some point? I feel you RE the feeling of freedom with "side projects" like these. It seems super fun. Painting infantry for a single project/army is satisfying but are also a tad limiting. bloodhound23
Two very WIP officers that have been sitting half done for months are getting some attention now that I had my startling self-revelation in my previous post. Still not going to do proper eyes with this bunch, but I will go back in and do a slit of Rhinox Hide for the eye sockets at the end. I'm trying some skin tones that are not my past recipes that basically start with Kislev Flesh, so we'll see how these turn out. So far for the faces this is just base coats that have had some minor glazing done to bring highlights out and then both have been washed with Reikland, so still a bit glossy. Might add a bit of Druchii Violet as well before I bring the colors back up a bit. Not sure which color for the beard yet. After that I need to do the gems (either green or red I suppose) on both weapons and then bases, finally. Thanks for looking! Brother Christopher
It's great to see some more infantry after the scratch-building and terrain break. The miniatures, even at this stage, are looking good. I particularly like the tan stripe on the loincloth (loin-fur?) on the second model. - that's a nice touch.
