Kazimir

Driving through the torrent of rain was difficult for the military man and the vehicle especially in the narrow streets. He had to take it extremely slowly as this City had streets built what seemed for children's vehicles instead of rugged Vehicles like David.

Helene and Aria

Helene has caught a minor weather induced illness (cough, cold, snivels etc, take your picks and narrate) this will last for 1d10 days (please roll) and will cause 1 damage per day (this cannot go beyond lightly wounded status). Damage starts from the next day and at that point you will be aware enough of the illness that you may consider seeking medical treatment.

You stand in the sheltered antechamber of St Sebastian, dripping wet but out of the storm. A number of other people are also milling about under the carful watch of a Ministorum attendant that guards the door to the church. Only those that are sufficiently dry may enter, however two heaters, one along each wall, and a stack of rough towls have been provided. As you warm yourself up and wring the worst of the rain out of your coats the crowd of church goers slowly shift to the other side of the room, so that by the time the attendant will admit you into the church you stand out in isolation despite the business of the church.

While not a cathedral the church is a large building, constructed from stone unlike the surrounding buildings. Behind the main alter a statue of Sebastian Thor looms over the alter, a sermon is in progress and the pews are about a quarter filled. Set into the outside walls are little alcoves, each dedicated to a different imperial saints, their Icons central to each shrine. Some have figures gathered round in prayer.

At the far side of the church, on the opposite end to the main alter, a queue has formed, and you recognise several people who had been waiting in the antechamber with you in it. Here further attendants where handing out a simple meal of soup and bread, just enough to warm up weather beaten congregation members.

Ravia and Kazimir

Time taken 2.5 hours!

Between the rain, the storms darkness, local traffic and the unfamiliar streets it takes far longer than anticipated to reach the Norrgate Hostel. While Kazimir parks out front Ravia heads inside, hopeing that they would find accommodation here, as traversing the city again in this weather was not a prospect she wanted to entertain.

A hurried looking elderly man looks up at you as you enter. “Yes” he drolls.

“Five of you is there? And a truck, that be 25 for one common room, or 15 each for two smaller, that’s all I got spare. The truck can go round back, take the passage way next to Atchett’s Antiques. Grub is 2 Thrones a mouth, 7 to 9 pm and 6 to 8 am.” Here he points to a half room adjoining the entrance way with a bunch of mismatched tables and assorted chairs. Around one table a small group of men are playing cards to pass the time while they wait out the weather.

You can take either option or leave and try elsewhere. If taking a room deduct relevant fee from team funds. Food will need to be paid forr at time of eating, or you can go elsewhere for food (or eat rations from David's stores).

Helene

The inviting warmth of the church is a welcome reprieve from the biting weather outside. As Helene wipes a bit of fluid from her nose, she feels not only the warmth of the heaters. but the warmth of His embrace. Sanctuary at last! Truly a blessing to be thankful for, and thankful she was. She would have to, once again, thank the Emperor for His benevolence, and a holy place such as this would certainly be the ideal place to do so.

Leaving Aria to her own devices, Helene goes to the shrine of a pilgrim saint, to give thanks to Him on Terra, and ask for the saints boon in the coming travels. As she quietly prays, she keeps an ear open to listen to the sermon being conducted at the main shrine.

Ravia

You take a moments break in the weather to cross the road and enter Hobson's Livery, from the outside all you had seen was a semi rundown building, with dust and grime covering the windows of the lower floors. A faded sign sits in the window but you cannot make out what it says. Once inside you can see that was once the back wall of the shop space had been removed and now connected to a large warehouse that sits behind the shop. Most of the shop space is taken up with shelves of supplies for travelers, from rations, repair kits, outdoor kits and similar.

In the warehouse behind are several parked vehicles, and several further in various stages of disassembly for repair. You can see two works, their back to you, working on the engine compartment of a cargohauler. A local public vox broadcast bubbles away from a radio set propped up on an oil drum.

Helene and Aria

While Helene goes prays Aria remains nearby, ever the bodyguard. As the church empties following the completion of the repast and the bell tower striking another hour, Aria begun to stray a little further, all the while still keeping her charge in sight. With fewer people in the building there were few avenues of danger.

Sometime later Aria’s attention was drawn to a Deacon and a band of acolytes that where making their rounds. At each shrine the Deacon would utter a brief prayer, while the acolytes replaced any candles and incense that had expired. A further two acolytes, censors swinging, maintained a steady chant throughout.   They were now only two alcoves away.

Varn

The weather had forced you to seek shelter in a cheap eatery filled with lunchtime crowd. They were all too busy to pay you much attention, but they still clocked that you where an outsider to be excluded from their groups.

A little while later, with the rain either lessened or maybe the city was proving a temporary shield, you head out again. Following the guards direction to the market, you do reach it with only one or two stops to ask for fresh directions.

Arrayed ahead of you now are many stands, most closed on account of the weather, but a few stubborn ones remained open. The store fronts of the established shops that lined the edge of the markets on the other hand are lit, the usual bustle of the market having taken to these.

Please let me know if you are in the Old Market Square, or in the Fish Market area (for clarity more than Fish is sold here it is just a historical name).

Varn:

Varn wandered around the Old Docks Market. He chatted to anyone who would speak with him and bought them drinks.

He used his friendly voice and asked if anyone knew of travellers from the lake region where his tribe were headed. Wildlife and any stories.

Kazimir

Kazimir stayed next to the vehicle and began his usual maintenance checks. He would continue those until he had double checked everything. Coming from Cogger, a Mechanicus leaning world, he was taught from a young age the importance of maintaining your equipment. After he had finished that he would clean and double check his weapons next to the vehicle also keeping an eye for anything that would disturb his crew’s gear. He kept a kind of guard as he did the minor tasks he could while everyone got on with exploring the city.

Helene

Having already finished her prayers a few minutes ago, the humble cleric is admiring the interior of the church (and delaying her inevitable journey back into the cold). The shrine of the Pilgrim Saint Iter Patriam, to whom she had directed most of her prayers, was particularly detailed, depicting the route he had taken to Terra and back, with several hardships and detours. Emperor willing, this expedition should go a lot more smoothly, but if it didn't, His servants would rise to the challenge nonetheless.

Looking around the rest of the worshipful place, she noticed the Deacon and his acolytes approaching, performing their ritual as they went. Realizing the spiritual importance of their procession, Helene politely steps away from the shrine, giving them ample room to perform their duty. As she does so, she gives a respectful bow to the Deacon, making the sign of the aquila as well.

Aria

Aria mimiced Helenes' actions always cautious to bring no attention to herself unless required as her unsettling nature was useful when intimidation was required but far less so in such social circumstances.

She did not pray however, to do so would perhaps lessen the purity of her wards own entreaties to the God Emperor just as Arias presence was often unwelcome amongst higher society... save for the nobles Helene had encountered barely a year before, bloodthisrty predators wearing the mask of their position. Aria recalled their curiosity rather than revulsion and since had watched for the same mask in others as sign of a potential threat.

Ravia (and Kazimir)

Both workers look up and around as you spoke, then one hollered.

“Kastn, customer.”

A moment later an oil and grease stained overall appeared from within the guts of another partially dismantled vehicle.

“Bussy” came the reply, to which the original worker grunted and his colleague added.

“Soun’s like electrical stuff.”

Reluctantly Kastn pulled himself out, downed his tools and made his way over to you, casting a glare at the other two that went entirely unnoticed.

You explain the problem with David’s system and what you had already tried to solve it that morning. Kastn listens attentively and asks a few pertinent questions. It quickly becomes apparent that without seeing the truck it be hard to pinpoint the exact problem. Grabbing a toolkit and indicating you to lead the way Kastn yells over the radio broadcast.

“Be over at the Hostel to look at this here  Goliath.”

While you initially moved as if to walk round to the vehicular entrance that you and Kazimmir had used earlier Kasten headed straight for the Hostels front door, brushed passed the old man at the counter and headed through a ‘staff’ door. The old man just shakes his head and then seeing you just pointed at the door.

“Go on then, but that truck better be in a fit state to leave when you do, this is no scrap yard.”

Through the door was a short corridor, a half open door showed a cramped office, and on the other side a service hatch showed where the kitchen was. Straight ahead was a door gently swing shut again, hurrying to catch it before it closes you see that you are now in the courtyard behind the Hostle near the covered portion where David was parked.

Kazimir was sitting on a crate next to David, his giant sword in his lap as he run a cloth over the blade. Kastn had stopped and half turned back to Ravia.

Aria and Helene

The Deacon acknowledged Helene’s bow with a polite nod, then his eyes jumped to Aria. Staring straight at her for a long second, having completely stopped in his procession. Several of the chanting acolytes noticed the pause and hesitated a moment, so that they were now out of sync with the others.

Then the Deacon continued his steady pace, but no prayer or psalm was uttered until he was past the next pillar and out of sight of you both.

If you think you are done in St Sebastian you can head to the Hostel, seek out Varn or pursue any other goal within the city.

Varn

Initially you where met with shrugs and polite declinations to your questions, with only a few titbits on wildlife, some of which you suspect was just city folk talk, having heard similar tales before. The few bits of apparent genuine information you added to your knowledge from home, after all some similarities between the fauna of the two continents is to be expected.

One helpful shopkeeper also gave you directions to Scherinfield Furrier, explaining that trappers and hunters that worked the wilderness often sold their goods there, and Scherinfield also organised hunting trips for the idle rich.

You have spend 2D10 Thrones (for the drinks for various people). Scherinfield Furrier is the light blue/grey building north east of the citadel and south of the second gate on the east side. You can head there, to the Hostel or continue around the market area if there is other things you are after, it is by now late afternoon.

Helene

Having finished her prayers and wishing to retire for the day, Helene departs the church and heads for the hostel, Aria following close behind. The cleric is hopeful that her prayers will light the path forward on the coming journey, and perhaps banish the dreadful weather conditions...

Ravia

"Kazimir, this is Kastn. He will be looking at the vehicle's systems. Kastn, Kazimir is our driver and assists in vehicle maintenance."

Ravia moved to the Goliath and began to prep for the rites of repair and diagnostics. Lighting a small incense burner, she walked around the truck while canting praises in bianaric code.

Kazimir

Kazimir nodded, then gestured that the man should move it to the vehicle and get to work. He had already done what he could so, he sheathed his sword and got to work on his laspistol. An old Triplex Pattern "Fury" Assault Laspistol that had clearly seen better days, was the next thing on his Maintenace list to do. The fact he even had an old one marked him as someone who had been special at one point in the Guard, not that the severe amount of augmetics didn't already signify that. Either way in his mind he did these rituals of habit for both the care of his materials that was ingrained to him and as a connection to his life before he had died. Even in Death, one serves the God Emperor. Blessed the Omnissiah that has remade him into a tool to continue his service.

Aria

Such looks were common, Aria noted the priest but thought little more of it.

"Mistress, do you wish to visit the markets or do you seek audience within the city?" Arias role of bodyguard had always been limited by circumstance as her presence was not always welcome in more formal or raucous locations even with Helenes word and position in her favour. Perhaps of more immediate value though was to remind Helene of the task at hand - lest her preference for testing herself consume her thoughts.

Ravia and Kazimir

Kastn wearily moved past Kazimir, keeping an eye on the sword until it was sheethed.

Waiting respectfully for Ravia to finish her initial cant, though from the way he covered his nose with it is clear he is no fan of the incense.

“Right then, let’s see what we got here.” Starting with a thorough examination of the electrical systems Kastn worked his way from one access panel to another, performing tests as he went. As he works he asks you to recount the events of the previous day as to how the fault had developed. Then after the initial inspection he begins dismantling several panels in earnest, as you watch him you can see burn patterns on some of the wires and their connection that he has now exposed to the light of day.

“You may have been struck by lightning”, he concludes, “enough voltage to damage the system, and overwhelm the safety fuse, but not enough to cause obvious damage. I’ll need some time to trace and replace all the damaged components, but nothing critical is in need of repair, just the support infrastructure.”

“Probably half a day’s work with help, It’s getting late today, so it will be tomorrow now.”

Replacement components will cost 4D10+5 Thrones, and Kastn labour will cost 12 Thrones per hour. Time required will be determined by umber of DoS on Kastn Tech Use, which Ravia can assist by passing a Challenging (+0) Tech Use test.
Alternatively you can attempt to do the repairs yourself, components cost will be the same, and you will need to pass a series of Difficult (-10) Tech Use Tests until you have accumulated sufficient DoS (5+D10 rolled by me if you choose this option) to repair. Each test represents an hour’s work.
Either way work cannot begin until 8am the next morning, so plenty of time to make your decision.

Helene

"Actually, I was thinking of retiring for today Aria. I believe our devotion has been sufficiently tested, and that it would be best to return and prepare for tomorrow."

Looking back at the bodyguard, Helene suddenly wondered if the question was a veiled request for the cleric to join her in some errands around town, so that she would be shielded from the unearned scrutiny of the masses by her position underneath someone more universally respected. With this in mind, Helene decided to add:

"Of course, if there is anything you believe should be done before our return, I'd be more than happy to accompany you."

Varn, Aria and Helene

As Varn heads towards the Furrier the direction he has been given lead him past the citadel’s bailey. Imposing walls that dominate the surrounding streets. About t o turn a corner to head eastwards once more he spots the Fanatic and her attendant in the distance, heading in his direction, no do doubt looking for the market he had just left behind.

Waiting in a shop door alcove for them he greets them as they draw level. While they may indeed find what they were looking for in one of the shops near the market Varn suggested that they all head to Scherinfield Furrier, a place like that was likely to have supplies suitable for extended trips into the hinterland, or at least knew the best place to acquire them.

Scherinfield Furrier had an odd, perhaps charming, dichotomy to it. On the whole it was a well kept establishment, finely made out; it would have not been out of place in the better districts of a spire. Yet it was here, in the shadow of the citadel at the far end of the world, or close enough. As you enter two others are just about to leave, seasoned trappers in the city only long enough to resupply.

To the left of the entrance way was a lounge area, with a large central table. Where under cover of glass a 3D map of the south eastern part of Orealis was on display, carved from wood to great detail it was even possible to make out the very street that the shop was on. The walls where covered in photo and picto graphs, and even a few holostatics of hunters, some with trophies, while others where group shots of parties at scenic locations.

In contrast the right part of the shop was all business, shelves of supplies for those seeking to travel the wild lands as well as some ‘trophies and souvenirs’ for those that did not want to actually experience the wilderness. Lastly there were the furrier direct merchandise, everything from fur lined boots and garments to full pelts for draping in front of fireplaces or wherever else the nobility might fancy.

Inside, seated in a rocking chair near the till and cogitator, a wizened gammer was humming a tune to herself. Hearing the door bell a man emerges from the workshop in the back.

“Shush Siobhán, got customers in.”

Turning to you he continues.

“Welcome, I’m Colm, how can I help?”

  • 2 weeks later...

Varn, Aria and Helene

“If it is kit you need you have come to the right place, only the best here for any trip into the wilderness.”

Seeing the drenched state of the three Colm heads over to right.

“Perhaps we should start with something to fend of buckets outside. We have a variety of seizes of waterproof attire. From Oilcloth and oilskin, to Macs and even some Indus-Cello-plastik.”

You can hear Colm’s displeasure with the later, and indeed the industrial produced gear is much like you can get anywhere. The former items however, are much more professionally made, the different types of oilskins, rubber infused Macs and similar. The first row are more suitable for the here and now, water proof but not wilderness cloth. Colm is well aware of this but is using the opportunity to show the quality of the different ware.

“As you are heading north may I draw your attention to these, much the same protection against the elements as the earlier examples, but lined with Ursarchus fur for insulation and comfort, or if you prefer it to be lighter we do import insocloth used for insulation in vac suits as an alternative lining material.”

He lets you continue to look through the coats, trousers, spats and associated foul weather protective clothing, the only thing obviously lacking are boots and other footwear.

All gear will be of good quality or better (and cost accordingly) aside from mass produced items which will be common quality and can be get anywhere. Just let me know what sort of clothing/items you imagine for your characters and Colm will give you a price. If you have no idea just say how much gear you want (just a coat, the full works or somewhere in between).

“I have a guide book for Onegburg, Lake Lomsa, Lake Adoga and up to Lake Vanik.” As he speaks he moves over to the map table to point at a few places. However before he can fully get into a topic that is clearly well rehearsed you have to intervene. The lakes he is pointing at are not the one you meant, though they might be on your way if you do indeed travel up river.

Mistake rectified, Colm rolls out a paper map on the tables surface, this one showing more of the continent and where you are heading, to confirm where you are headed.

“You really are heading into the wilderness. I never been that far north, and none of the regular hunting expedition go much beyond Lake Vanik. Some of the trappers and like might. Siobhán, anybody come to mind that has been up all the way there?”

After a moments silence form Siobhán, she just continued rocking in her chair, Colm turned back to you to answer your other questions.

“There will be Ursarchus to watch out for, they are said to roam down from the mountains with their young. Best to avoid them if you can, they are big and not easily deterred once they decide that someone is a threat. Many a hunter has overestimated their resilience and tenacity.”

Colm files you in on some of the other wildlife that he is aware of, but it is all similar enough to what you know from your home on southern main continent that you are only half listening. A tap draws you back to Siobhán, who has stopped her humming and was tapping the side of her chair.

“Lady Hu might know more, didn’t you say last year she was heading up the spine  of the mountains, I saw her in the market just a few days ago.”

I have for ease of reference included the map with your sites of interest again, the lakes further south are named by Colm (along with the settlement) the one you seek is Dunnsee further north.

Aria

Aria had little coin but hoped the price here would at least be matched in ruggedness, at least amongst the more practical items. Oiled fur, a hooded poncho large enough to fit over her equipment and shelter her weaponry from the rain while on guard, loose enough to move in but not so much as to be hindering, and quick to discard if needed. Dark and adequate for camouflage. And a water-sealed pack.

No footware however, unfortunate as the weather here seemed fit for mirker's greaves.

The mistress would doubtless be more discerning.

Ravia

Ravia told Kastn that they would gladly use his expertise and she would assist, thinking that learning more about the Omnissiah's blessings could always help. While walking him back she called out to Kazimir.

"Maybe tomorrow you would be willing to shop around for some items I might be able to use Guardsman Kazimir? I don't believe the Goliath or inn will need guarding."
