Mini of the Year 2023

Recommended Posts

People seem to be getting rather worked up over what gets included in a competition with no cost, no stakes, and no prize. Like, I'm pretty sure Magnus, Be'lakor and every other model that won didn't get a medal or a cash prize for this, nether did anyone who voted for them. Nor are resin models terrible because they're not included, you're allowed to like what you like. It's just a bit of harmless fun.

I voted for Angron because my Chaos-tainted blood demands it, but I was also very tempted to vote for something Seraphon related - probably the Kroxigor. I'll start a force of them at some point, they're too good not to.

Why people waste their time voting something that cannot surely win?

It will be Angron. Makes no bones (skulls?) about it.

Jokes aside, there are many wonderful models this year, they remind me of how many of them I still have to paint and I can't wait.

Kudos to the sculptors and painters for a great year of minis.

Ah yes, I voted for Angron. Come on!

Do you think it's Forgeworld? Because it isn't. Logistically, all the plastics are through the arm of the main design studio. The big foundational plastic kits that underpin Forgeworld's business are designed by the departments with the decades of experience for doing injection mold kits like that. What Forgeworld does is the game design and supports them with supplemental resin miniatures.

(Me and my co workers have been on a full tour of their Nottingham facilities while working on several licensed projects over their years)

That may have been true when you worked for relic or Sega or whoever it was, but it’s not true now. The Specialist Games Design Studio has sculptors that only design Horus Heresy, Necromunda, Titanicus, Blood Bowl, and now Legiones.

The Specialist Games studio is definitely designing both their plastic and resin offerings. This is quite visible now especially with Horus Heresy, as there's quite different design philosophy in plastic sprue design as compared to the main game studios. The MESBG terrain kits also have a separate terrain designer, which is quite noticeable in their expansibility.

I really wanted to as well, but my problem is that not a single thing really stood out. The range refresh is great as a whole, but on a kit by kit basis I don’t think anything Seraphon beats the some of the top picks like Manticore mommy or Angron.

Agreed, the Seraphon release overall was one of the best looking range launches of the year, but there wasn't an individual model/kit that outshone any of the ones being talked about. Even the Slann felt understated compared to Lord Kroak from a few years back.

I chose the Sternguard when I got to then in the list because I couldn't be bothered to keep scrolling.. and to be fair, they look good. Lol

Well I'm glad someone likes them because as competently designed as that kit is, that's my least favourite iteration of Sternguard.

Maybe if the sergeant had a toga and Mohawk helmet with his hand on a scabbard...

I can't believe the lion won for any reason other than being the most popular factions' most prominent release. I understand "best mini" is subjective but even on here most people picked other things.
