Lysimachus
Atesh: Sarge grunts. “No worries. I got a good feeling about you.” Then he shakes his head. “No-one's gonna get in your way if they know you're going to see Calder. But I'll take you up myself anyway. Better if I do. Calder doesn't like getting visitors he wasn't expecting. Come on.” After hours of hard climbing, moving up narrow maintenance shafts and through low tunnels, you finally arrive at Deck 4. There is no detectable change, no practical sense of being closer to the open air, though perhaps the simple knowledge that you are the best part of a kilometre higher might make the atmosphere feel somewhat lighter? Otherwise, Deck 4 is just as dark, dirty, cramped, and hot as the level you left. That is, until Sarge leads you to what seems to be a side chamber along one of the mine tunnels. Even from outside, a flickering light is visible and you get the sense of a larger space within. A pair of prisoners - still hunched and poorly nourished, but bigger, fitter and stronger than the average denizen of Dante’s Barrow - stand at the entrance. Sarge nods to them and then turns to you. “Wait here a minute.” Then he passes through the portal into the chamber beyond. OOC: As it will take some time for Atesh to climb to Deck 4 (several hours by maintenance hatches/ ladders) I will bring us back to include what is happening outside the Barrow. Obadiah: It takes some hours for you to move around to the northern side of the prison, your slow but careful pace helping you avoid being silhouetted by the sinking sun. From the closer vantage point you can now clearly see the heavy mesh fence, perhaps four metres tall and topped by tightly curled barbed wire. You can also see ten metres behind this outer perimeter a second fence of similar design. Between, no man's land. Evening begins to fall, and you conceal yourself to wait for full darkness. But as the sky gradually fades from azure to a deeper blue, a sudden, blinding light bursts into existence. The fence line itself remains unlit, but atop each of the guard towers a pair of powerful spotlights flare to life. They immediately begin to move, reaching out across the night landscape. A beam might cross your position, but all it reveals is another tan coloured rock. You watch the lights quartering the open plain, their movements too regular and smooth to be controlled by a human hand. Servo-skull operated, for sure. If you wish, you may make an Ordinary(+10) Intelligence test to determine the pattern of movement of the automated spotlights. If Successful, it will grant a bonus to any future Stealth test to approach the fence or one of the guard towers. Lysimachus
Atesh: After a few moments Sarge returns and waves you past the thugs at the door. You enter and find yourself in a large, natural chamber in the rock, lit by a single, semi-functioning glow globe strung up from the ceiling. Down here it is a wealth of light. Several men stand around an old table, looking down at scraps of paper under the flickering light. One turns to look as you enter. He is tall, broad, and carries a sense of… purpose? …that is missing amongst most of the inhabitants of Dante's Barrow. His clothes, although somewhat ragged, are clearly the tan fatigues of a prison guard. He steps away from the table to move towards you, his face suddenly shadowed from the globe's weak light, and that is when you notice that his eyes are an odd colour. They shine, a faint, orangey-purple, iridescent glow. He offers his right hand, and you might notice that the fingers are just slightly elongated, vaguely claw-like. “Welcome, friend,” he says in a warm, yet authoritative tone. “My name is Calder, though you can call me Fritz. Sarge said he had a good feeling about you, and I have learned to always listen to his hunches.” You may, if you wish, make a Challenging(+0) Awareness and/or Psyniscience test about Calder and the rest of the occupants of the room. Lysimachus
Atesh: Your senses tingling, you can feel the influence of the warp in this place. Not only Fritz Calder - though it is especially strong in him - but in all of the men in the chamber. You feel Tchar's touch on their bodies and their minds. A light, featherlike touch… but gathered together? It might be enough… “Change? Yes…,” Calder smiles, “You feel it too, Atesh. The purpose is borne, and so what is needful to achieve it… will come. Do you bring what we need, brother?” Obadiah: You stop a few metres from the outer fence. The spotlight pattern halts just behind you, as though the defenders do not believe that anything could reach this point without being seen. However, they are hardly the last layer of protection. Your careful surveillance reveals movement within the ten metre strip between the fences. Something - not a man, too low to the ground - is patrolling the stretch between guard towers, moving towards your position. It is an animal, a mastiff, but it doesn't move with a dog's natural, meandering walk. Instead, its pace is precisely controlled, measured, pausing every few steps while its head swings slowly from side to side. There is little bionic augmentation visible, other than an augur unit implanted onto one side of its head, but its logical manner plainly identifies the beast as a cyberhound. Presumably, should it discover an intruder within its assigned territory, more savage protocols would most likely come into effect. Augmented or not, it is a big, muscular animal, heavy yet still agile, with a wide, powerful jaw and sharp teeth. For an escaping prisoner, facing it would be a fearsome prospect. Opposed Awareness (vs Stealth) test: Fail… just… It moves past you, scanning devices somehow failing to detect your presence, and continues on towards the next tower. The structure is perhaps a hundred metres away, so at the hound’s regulated pace you can estimate that you have perhaps four or five minutes until it returns and passes your hiding place again. Lysimachus
Atesh: Fritz laughs aloud. “Many. More than can be gathered here! Lysimachus
Obadiah: You reach your chosen position of cover just in time to look back and see the cyberhound returning past your entry point. From your location, it is impossible to see the damage you did to the fence… but of course the dog is much closer. It takes a few steps and pauses in its usual pattern, moving its head from side to side. Opposed Scrutiny vs Deceive test: not a good Pass, but a Pass… It is unclear what exactly has caught the beast's attention. A visual clue, a slight movement in the cut links? A trail of ambient heat or scent across the no-man's land? Whatever the case, the hound arches its back, raising its head skywards, and opens its heavy jaws wide. The sound that comes out is not a natural howl. It is a piercing, synthesised siren that carries across the landscape. After a moment, the tower spotlights on both sides pause in their automated search, and after a second or two begin to move again in a less precise fashion. First one, then the other, turn inwards to flood the narrow space between the fences with light, empty except for the alarm-sounding animal construct. Another few seconds, and your enhanced hearing picks up a raised voice atop the walkway of the closer tower. It seems to be talking to someone else, perhaps via vox as you cannot detect a second speaker. The voice sounds… irritated? “Yes, this is Tower 9… Throne damned cog-dog's cryin’ wolf again, sir! …No sir, no sign of anything down there… probably just a Kyoti taking a leak up the fence…?” The voice pauses for a longer moment, as though listening. Then it answers, as though resigned to a necessary but pointless job. “Yes sir, understood. Stubbers are locked and loaded. We'll shut off the siren and keep our eyes open until your response team arrives to check the 9-10 fence for breaches. Tower 9 out.” Atesh: Fritz smiles back and walks over to the table, gesturing to the scraps of paper strewn across its surface. In the glow globe's poor light, you can see that they seem to be crudely drawn maps, annotated with numbers and arrows. “I know this place well, Brother Atesh. I was… employed here, for many years. Until my eyes were opened.” He gestures to his clothing, then to his strangely coloured irises. “I tried to conceal them at the start, but eventually my former colleagues found me out. The traitorous filth threw me into the mines along with one of the prisoner intakes. Thought they were being kind by not killing me immediately. Fools. I will be avenged for their betrayal.” The last is a low snarl, and the elongated fingers close into a fist, before relaxing. “But what is needful is provided. I know how everything at Dante's Barrow works. The grav-conveyor is of no use to us. It was designed with fully automated defences and an open killing field at the top, certain death for anyone trying to use the lift cars as an escape route. Whatever is really happening down on Deck 13, they have helped us take the first step to freedom by locking out the conveyor and putting the casket system back into use.” “There are three casket shafts. Each one is guarded at the top to prevent break-outs, but the whole system predates the mine becoming a prison. Space at the top of the shafts is limited, so the guard nests do not have quite as much clear ground as they should. Shaft 2 is the tightest. A force carried in a casket could reach and overwhelm the nest there, if they had even a second or two of covering fire to prevent the guards from cutting them down immediately. From there, the dominoes fall. They could stop the pulley system from being shut off, so that more caskets and more prisoners would reach the plant floor. Teams could be sent to attack the guards at the other two shafts, tripling our points of egress.” He frowns thoughtfully, then looks at you and taps one long finger against the side of his head. “I have had a very long time to plan this, my brother. I know the timings of the three shafts’ caskets, to the second. I know how to keep the pulley system working long enough to bring our followers up in sufficient numbers to challenge the guards.” “The guard post at Shaft 2 is the lock. If I had a few lasguns, or even a single frag grenade, as a key, I could open the door and tear this whole place down around their heads. Alas… weapons? Explosives? These are not things that can be found anywhere in the Barrow where a prisoner might put his hands on them.” He smiles again. “But as I said, what is needful… So… can your gifts help us in our task?” Mazer Rackham, FabiusV4lcoran and Trokair 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/383296-bc-the-blackest-heart-part-ii-ic/page/31/#findComment-6151770 Share on other sites

Atesh spent a moment looking towards the papers and the desk under the glow-globe, thinking for a moment. "Do the guards come through for any special circumstances? Lysimachus
Obadiah: You move swiftly and silently south along the valley formed between two of the long, curving hab-units. As you are about to cross the open space between the north and south lines of units, you freeze, hearing movement to the east. At the far end of the rows, moving in the opposite direction to you, a squad of mortal soldiers hustle towards the fence. Time is fast disappearing. After the last of the guards hurries out of view, you sprint across the gap and into another valley. Reaching its southernmost end, you look up at the monstrous shape of the Barrow. Though the complex is an industrial rather than a military facility, it follows many of the standards of Imperial design - a fearsome looking, gothically buttressed outer wall covered by iconography, in this case symbols of the Mechanicus. There are three large portals along this side of the building, each sitting under a heavy lintel decorated with cogs and skulls. No windows break the facade, but there are several other possible points of ingress - pipes and tubes of various sizes and cross sections run up and down and along the walls, sometimes protruding from it. Some are waste outlets, perhaps, others look like ventilation shafts. Behind you, you can just make out shouts of alarm. It is followed by a siren, similar to the sound made by the cyberhound but louder, emitted from speakers all across the prison. Floodlights all along the fence perimeter flare into life, brightening the sky behind you almost to midday. The guards are obviously aware that their defensive line has been penetrated. It is almost certain that many more of them will soon be out here searching for the cause of the breach. You've got a few options here. You could hide amongst the hab-units, try to slip around to another side of the building, or try to get inside immediately - there are the 3 main entrances/exits (though others might be coming out through them fairly soon!) or you can break in through a ground level waste pipe or climb up the wall (there are plenty of handholds) to a higher vent shaft? Or something else? Atesh: Fritz frowns. “Indeed it would, but alas, no. We can gain no weapons that way. The guards are not fools enough to come down here… or at least, never more than two steps off the grav-conveyor! Prisoners outnumber them twenty to one. As long as the required ores continue to flow upwards, they choose to leave us to our own devices. If the ore stops flowing for any reason, the meagre supplies of food and water they send back down stop entirely too. Or, if they are in a hurry, the ventilation systems are shut down.” He smiles, though this time it does not reach his oddly coloured eyes. “An assault via the caskets is a risk, but it is the best chance we have. The one you know as the Great Crow, I know as The Architect. He is blessing our plans, providing each part of the puzzle at just the right time to make it happen as it is needed…” Sarge looks up suddenly, as though looking through the cavern ceiling, up beyond the layers of rock. His eyes are unfocused, his face slack, as though listening to what you cannot hear. He mutters uncertainly. Something about his voice, the whispered words, feels almost familiar. “Something… happening…? Now… should it…? …it should. It should be now…” Fritz looks disbelievingly at the veteran and pales slightly. "Now...? Already...?" He looks back to you, suddenly unsure. Then he nods decisively, even eagerly. "I will trust the plans of The Architect. I must be in the first casket, to direct our brethren when we reach the surface. Will you join me, Brother Atesh?" Iron Father Ferrum
Obadiah Obadiah fought to keep a smile from pulling up the corners of his mouth. He'd managed the approach and initial penetration with appropriate stealth, but now the time for stealth was over. It was time to get loud. The Mantis Warrior unslung Fate's Eye and tucked the butt of the boltgun into his shoulder as he slowly rose his crouch. With the weapon at the low ready, he went into what his 10th Company instructors had always called the "combat glide:" he moved faster than a walk but not quite a jog, legs bent slightly as he moved so that his torso didn't bob. It allowed one to move quickly but still maintain a modicum of stealth, and the lack of torso movement meant you didn't lose much in the way of accuracy, either. He glided across the open ground between the habs and the main facility, aiming for the nearest entry. He was going to be known to security the moment he entered the facility, but as the wailing klaxon indicated, that was inevitable. He just hoped that the prisoners -- and his target in particular -- chose to take advantage of the alarm. If the interior of the prison was in chaos (he chuckled at the double meaning), it would just make his task so much easier. Decision made, Obadiah committed to action. As he approached, he lengthened his stride until, in a matter of steps, he was at a full sprint. He tucked the bolter away to his right side, lowered his left shoulder, and slammed into the door like a torpedo. Spoiler Strength Check to knock down the door S 41 + 20 (Power Armor) = 61 Roll 12. Iron Father Ferrum
Obadiah Until his path through the room was clear, there really wasn't much else that needed to be done except to keep pulling the trigger. Funf, funf, funf, said Fate's Eye as more boltshells leapt from the barrel. Spoiler Half-Action: Aim Taking aim at the horde Half-Action: Semi-Auto Burst BS53 + 10 (Aim) + 10 (Horde) = 73 Roll: 58. FabiusV4lcoran
Atesh Sapik Atesh nods at Fritz's opening response, before noticing the distraction. He looked around and strained to notice any changes. Unfortunately, he'd only been metaphorically underground prior to incarceration, and couldn't sense any change of circumstance. "What do you hear brother? Does the Cr...Ark-i---do you hear our lord?" he asked eagerly. Lysimachus
Atesh: Sarge looks at you, still slightly dazed from his psychic revelation. He shakes his head to clear it. "Dunno… maybe...? just got a feeling that something is happening upstairs, and now is our best chance.” Fritz nods. “I believe. I trust your senses. Brothers, go and gather your faithful as quickly as possible! You know your assigned places, and the timing of our attacks at each shaft. May The Architect bless our careful plans!” He turns to look beseechingly at you, orange-purple eyes shining. “Brother Atesh, if you wish to be set free, now is the time!” Obadiah: The silenced boltgun coughs again and another warder is messily splattered across the lockers behind him. The rest, still outnumbering you four to one, now have their weapons raised. With surprising courage - or perhaps rather a foolhardy lack of understanding of what they now face - they move closer, firing as they come. But their attacks are as pinpricks. Note that you get +10 for Short Range, which will give you enough DoS for 2 Hits, plus 1 vs Hordes because a Bolter is an X Dam weapon = 3 Hits. As before, all Hits cause Mag Dam = 3 Mag Dam suffered. Iron Father Ferrum
Obadiah Foolish, he thought. Brave, but foolish. Aim, fire. Aim, fire. Aim, fire. The idiots closed the distance to the point where he barely even had to aim.
