Boc's 2025 WIP Thread (Bile and Jumpy Lord complete 2/19)

I think I wound up painting 3 different armies last year so having different threads seemed a bit much.

 

Current armies are:

Chaos Space Marines, paint and play

Chaos Knights, paint and play

Dark Angels, paint and ebay (i didnt really like the playstyle)

 

It's been a long time since I've updated anyways, so this will help to keep me disciplined on progress beyond just the annual paint challenge.

First dump!

 

It's been a very productive start to the year compared to how 2024 ended, and I've already finished up a squad of heavy intercessors, a LT, 10x Sternguard, and a Land Raider.

I just started trying to use inks for OSL. I'd stopped doing anything really other than dry brushing for the last year or two, but I really like the results.

I'd been on an infantry binge since finishing up my Knight Rampager in the final stretch of Call to Arms, so getting back to it with a land raider redeemer.

 

I had some sloppy ink application on one side and some of the matte varnish on top dried odd (I think the oil may have still been wet)

 

One of our local players is buying it so I'll be able to see it on the tabletop

Sternguard squads! I finished the second one last night so we're all caught up on the year to date stuff.

I've currently got a 10 man unit of Hellblasters assembled and ready to prime and am working on finishing up assembly on a repulsor. 

 

I'd say the backlog continues to shrink but I just picked up 3 Predators for my CSM... so... yeah...

Productive night, was able to finish up all the reds on the hellblasters, and threw in a repulsor and land raider for funzies

Had some good progress today as well as a couple "oh nooooooooo" moments

 

 

 

I've got a new type of painting tape because the last rolls had horrible hold and kept getting blown off. This stuff is apparently too sticky...

 

 

Other than that... the hellblasters are ready for trims and metallics. I'll do these in 2 batches of 5 since that's worked well for washes a few steps down the line. They should be finished up by... Thursday? Maybe?

 

 

Tomorrow I'll need to varnish and retouch a few spots on each of the tanks. I got bad overspray from the metal from a poorly angled spray while working on the levitation things, so that'll be a spot touch up. Then the giant chunks of red that came off.

Not yet, I'll pick some up next time I'm at my FLGS.

 

So after a few weeks of hobby slacking (pronounced "rediscovering Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2"), I finally got around to finishing metallics and applying decals to the hellblasters, repulsor, and land raider.

 

 

I love the Reaper decal. I've got two more big ones that I've got no idea how/where to use them, but they look awesome.

 

 

I'll have a few more applications of microsol/set to do on the hellblasters shoulder decals, so I'll likely drive forward with another gloss varnish on the vehicles tomorrow followed by first round of washes.

Washes all done on the hellblasters. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Reiver helms come out. I'm thinking these will be done on Sunday night, so just in time for the January challenge as overtime. 

 

 

 

Bases are all prepped (I do the snow and grass after putting the models on) and vehicles have the first of 3ish washes applied. After the black is a red brick, then umber, then spot applications of streaking grime. Because cleanliness is for nerds (Ultramarines)

The Reiver helms work really well on the Hellblasters

So many things completed... first the hellblasters. Finished these just in time for OT for the monthly challenge. I really like how the helms turned out, and feel like I toned down the glow to a reasonable amount. 

 

 

Individual shots because I want the image loading time to be unbearable:

 

 

I think, if I do hellblasters again, I won't try the glow effect for the underside of the weapon. Too small of an area for my clumsiness.

I'd forgotten that I'd turned off my air compressor when it was annoying me right before doing the ink on the headlights. It came out unevenly and I tried to touch it up as I could. Literally the very last step of the whole thing haha.

 

Switching back to CSM for February by the looks of it.

I like your scheme, as I'm working on a quite similar one. Nowhere near as clean as yours though...

The glow effects are impressive!

Ugh they have so much trim...

 

Got about 90 minutes in tonight, was only able to get some flesh colors on Fabius and steel trim on both lords and 5 legionaries.

 

 

I used washes instead of contrasts for the brown and red tinted flesh, and got the ensuing coffee stains. I'll need to figure out how to fix those or just cover them up with grime (that's my favorite part of weathering, covering up mistakes!)

Boc, you've done enough chaos marines you should be well acquainted with the amount of trim.  That said, I definitely feel for you.

 

I'm not much of a fan for the current Bile model, but your work on his coat is absolutely fantastic.  I really like the individual tones to the different panels, both in their individual execution and as a whole.
