Arcamedies
As the title says, I am new to WH40k. I decided to buy into Ultramarines and Imperial Knights to start and figured I'd get my knights painted first so I can get an army to the table faster. I am trying to learn how to play on TableTop Simulator while I slay the gray. I look forward to learning what I can from this community and hope to one day be able to contribute to the discussion in a helpful and informative way. Any advice or tips & tricks are welcomed and I appreciate any help the members here can provide. I expect to do a lot of lurking in the beginning and eventually ask some questions as I familiarize myself with the rules better. I have a core rule book and index cards for SM, but still need to pick up a codex. Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge! Anyone in Oklahoma? ;) Firedrake Cordova, Xenith, Bouargh and 3 others 4 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385479-hello-all-new-to-wh40k-and-looking-forward-to-learning-from-some-veterans/ Share on other sites
Dr_Ruminahui
Welcome! As a fellow knight player (though on the chaos side), in my opinion there is a real value in magnetization if you are comfortable developing the hobby skills to do that (the knight kits are actually pretty easy to do, you just need to be sure to get strong enough magnets for the arm weapons). It gives you a lot of versatility and helps future proof your models - always a good thing when you are starting out and still getting a feel for what works best and what doesn't work as well as you might have thought. Thanks for the tip! I have magnets on the way because I have read about how Knight weapons get nerfed off and on. Right now I am just trying to learn how to thin my paints down well enough to paint such large surfaces without it looking streaky. I am considering getting an airbrush in order to make it look better because I have just enough OCD that it will bug me to not give them a proper paint job. I bought the munitions terrain to practice painting on and have not done very well with figuring out how to think my paint properly. I want to get an army to the table to get some games under my belt, so I thought this might be a better alternative while I get my painting figured out. Dr_Ruminahui
Well, thinning your paints is really a matter of painting style, and may not be strictly necessary - for example, I don't thin my paints and get acceptable results to my eyes, anyway (though, you are free to disagree - different tastes for different folks, after all). Anyway, here is a link to my own knights if you are interested. This, obviously, will depend on the colours you use and your paint style - lighter colours (white and yellow in particular) and cleaner paint schemes (you can hide a lot of painting sins with rust and dirt) both require more even paint consistency to get to look good. Air brushes can help, of course, particularly for large smooth surfaces like knight carapaces. That said, they aren't essential but may greatly speed up that aspect of the painting (though, you will have to factor in the time spent cleaning and trouble shooting your air brush). sbarnby71 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385479-hello-all-new-to-wh40k-and-looking-forward-to-learning-from-some-veterans/#findComment-6099599 Share on other sites
crimsondave
Welcome. My only advice is just make sure you go Ultramarines because you love Ultramarines and not because it’s all you know. There’s plenty to like about Ultramarines it’s just a lot of people just paint what’s on the box before knowing much about the different chapters.
