The Unbroken Vow - Black Legion warband

Hey everyone, have lurked on this site since I was a small lad and I finally believe its time to share with you all an army project of mine, my black legion warband, The Unbroken Vow. I have a sizeable force already but this is definitely ongoing and not just a show case. but for the sake of trying to show you guys the journey so far I'm gonna try and post in the order I built and painted the minis 

 

first up the first Chaos space marine squad 

 

This was the first squad I painted after first getting back into Warhammer after a long time away. this black Legion army really means alot to me as it helped me get over alot of really hard times a few years ago when I was struggling through some irl trials and tribulations, I always loved the Word Bearers and they will always be my favorite Legion, but I read ADBs black legion books and the themes of renewal and escaping the past really resonated with me personally and I did something I had never thought I'd do, paint an army that is actually on the box!

 

as these models were my first time back their paint is a little wonky but I still love them!

Alright time for some money shots and a bitta lore 

 

The Unbroken Vow is a warband comprised of mostly Former Word Bearers that grew disillusioned with the dark council and threw their lot in with Abbadon, they were sorted into the children of torment under the lord Purgator and the Lord was ordered to try and build a waystation in real space for the black legion to have a safe harbor while they persecute their wars and push forward into the now split imperium. this means they have to build and not just conquer and have come into alot of conflict with red corsairs trying to do the same, dark Eldar raiders, and of course the imperium itself! 

 

that's where the name of the warband comes from, The Unbroken Vow Made by the Former Dark Apostle Tor Garen to the Warmaster himself. to serve. in the strike cruiser the Testamentum inferni (the testament of hell) the warband goes about building space stations and conquering worlds to serve as cogs in the black legions greater war machine.

 

now onto the characters that make up the HQS 

 

Alastariel, Formerly of the 1st Legion.

Alastrariel was one of the space marines raised up on Caliban under Luthor in the days just before the legions return and the climatic battle that tore Caliban apart, Alastariel was cut down during the final battle for Caliban from sternum to groin he was split by Legion heroes Greatsword, as he lay dying the world finally cracked and he was spirited away by the warp to an abandoned Deamon world, His only companion a powerful neverborn bound into an axe, the Deamon whispered how she could save the quickly dying Astartes if only he opened his mind and soul to her, enraged by the betrayal of his legion and his seemingly inevitable death he accepted the pact and took up the axe, fighting for any warband that would hire him he eventually found hinmself as the master of executions for The Unbroken Vow.

I wanted to make his armor appear looted and put together as he literally had to scavenge nearly every piece, his legs are red because of an old warband that was in space marine one' customizer called the disciples of blood, they looked like blood was dripping up from their boots, I always liked that scheme and thought I'd put that in there to hint that he ran with them for a while before finding himself in the black legion

Barharradon, Equerry to the lord Purgator, Formerly of the sons of Horus 

Some within the Lord Purgators ranks don't believe in the sincerity of Tor Garens Vow and Barharradon has been sent as his Equerry to make sure that Tor Garen is doing the Warmasters bidding and not his own

Kol Kerphas, Formerly Corphyus of the Word Bearers 96th Host

Kol Kerphas is the right hand of Tor Garen, his former Corphyus, strategic advisor and confidante, now his warp seer and demonologist, he is staunchly loyal to Tor Garen since the days of the great crusade, when they were both line sergeants

Kael Akeron, The Jester Prince, Formerly of the IIIrd Legion 

Kael Akeron is a mysterious character, it is said that he has died or gone missing several times since the siege of Terra, but he always returns, at the head of another warband, this time he has been sighted as a dark apostle of slaanesh within the black legion. Akeron is a giant of an astartes. standing taller than even the new Cawl created space marines, he keeps to himself, revealing in debauchery within the bowels of the Testamentum Inferni or in the darker corners of the battlefield, he adorns his giant armor with the corpses of imperial holy servants, sisters of battle, ministorium priests and especially devote astartes.

Tor Garen, Former Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers 96th host, Former member of the Dark Council, Former Member of the clandestine Brotherhood

Tor Garen was once a powerful lord of the Word Bearers, he served his legion with loyalty throughout the great crusade, the shadow crusade, the siege of terra, the scouring and the legion wars. he even made war upon the black legion several times in the name of Kor Phareon, Ultimately after thousands of years of ceaseless scheming between the dark council members he took his host and went searching for answers, for a purpose, His eventual searching led him to a seer, an old crone hidden upon an abandoned Eldar world, the crone told him thus

 

"the velvet of the Urizen is squandered, wash oneself in the onyx of retribution and become a prince of the blackest hate"

 

and so the Unbroken Vow was born, Tor Garen took his host and swore fealty to the Warmaster

I love the conversions, and the character of each of the named minis. Really like the Reaverzerkers too, great way to integrate some HH flavor into a BL army. Thanks for sharing, keep it up.

The Huscarls of Tor Garen

 

 

Alepios Ironbreaker, Formerly of the IVth Legion 

Alepios Ironbreaker was a IVth Legion warrior taken captive by Drukhari during the scouring, and thrown into the Commorragh fighting pits for alien amusement, refusing to die Alepios fought tooth and nail against all comers eventually becoming a valued pit slave, he was kept in stasis between boughts and brought and sold as a highly prized combatant that led to any archon that possessed him winning great amounts in the gambling dens, due to the aliens long lived nature Alepios could be kept in stasis for thousands of years at a time before being pulled out for another arena match. Alepios was freed during  a raid into Commorragh by the Unborken Vow warband, not knowing anything of the changes between the traitor legions in his absence and despising his legion for abandoning him to the Xenos he agreed to join the Unbroken Vow, immediately his skill as an unparalleled swordsman became apparent, as well as his janissary nature at having no bonds to any other members of the warband makes him an extremely valued Huscarl. Alepios is a man of very few words, deeply scarred mentally by his time in captivity and possessing the extreme bitterness that many of Perturabos Gene-sons do.

 

Krull Skinweaver, Formerly of the Executioners Chapter 

Krull Skinweaver is a veteran of the Badab war, and Apothecary, sent into the eye of terror on the Executioners penitent crusade. Krull became extremely disillusioned with the imperium after being punished for what he saw as, doing his chapters duty, by coming to the aid of the Astral Claws chapter, Krull fought bitterly against the Carcharodon's during the war and holds extreme resentment for that chapter, During the Penitent Crusade the strike cruiser Krull served aboard was set upon by the VIIIth legion warship, he was taken prisoner by the Nightlords and they began to flay and torture him and his remaining brothers, flaying half his face, before they could continue their tender ministrations, that very VIIIth legion warship was attacked by the strike cruiser of the Unbroken Vow The Testamentum Inferni, the Nightlords attempted to fight back but were betrayed by one of their own Attramentar elite, Krull was freed by the black legion and seeing his value as an apothecary and with Krull already extremely disillusioned with the Imperium already. He agreed to serve, his fellow remaining brothers though, refused, and Krull's first order as a black Legionnaire was to kill them and that part of himself, he did and now wears their skulls with numbers inscribed denoting the order of their deaths.

 

Jergal Kinslayer, Formerly of the VIIIth Legion 

Jergal Kinslayer was a Nightlord aboard the very ship that shattered Krull Skinweavers vessel, once of their Terminator elite, once the black legion fell upon them Jergal saw only one way out, to open the gates for the enemy and hope they accepted, Jergal fell upon his fellow Attramentar suddenly on the bridge killing four of his brothers and slaughtering the rest of the bridge crew so that the black legion could board easily, the warband commander of the Nightlords had been away, taking his time with the captive executioners, leaving the bridge in the hands of his Attramentar, at the close of the battle, Tor Garen discovered Jergal extremely wounded, Terminator plate sundered from battling his fellows, and accepted the cut throat but extremely deadly Nightlord into the warband, not to be trusted but extremely an competent warrior Jergal is known as Kinslayer for his act of betrayal, and has no trust shared with his brothers of the black legion

 

Seraphina'mer, Keltana 

Former Drukhari Archon of the Thorneslit Throat Kabal, and Drukhari Trueborn, Seraphina'mer was responsible for many raids into real space, watching the Xenos from a distance, Tor Garen developed an interest in raiding the Commorragh domain and set out to ambush the alien raiders during their foray into real space and thus he did, the Unbroken Vow fell upon the Thornslit Throat whlile they were stretched raiding an imperial Agri world, Seraphina'mer relished the challenge and brought her kabal to bare on her Mon-Keigh adversaries, but fate had another plan for her, seeing the compromised position she was in, her own trueborn brother, rival and second in command attempted a coup mid battle, paying her own incubi to betray her, being an extremely consummate warrior she managed to survive the betrayal but as a fall back plan her brother had also ordered the kabal to abandon her for dead, left alone, surrounded by enemies, Tor Garen seeing an opportunity, struck a deal with the begrudged Xenos princess. he would see her returned to her command within her own kind, and she would help him persecute his raids into Commoragh and let the warband fall set upon her Drukhari adversaries. And Thus has the Unbroken Vow managed access to parts of the webway, one of these eventual raids leading to Alepios's freedom. the relationship between Tor Garen and Seraphina'mer is entirely transactional and one will attempt to slay the other the second the scales run uneven, Seraphina'mer refusing to let the Mon-keigh use her trueborn name, is referred to as Keltana within the warband, a Colchisan word roughly translating to  "The blade of the moon" 

 

Dagor Nul, Formerly of the XVIth Legion 

Dagor Nul was the standard bearer of his company during the horus heresy and has kept the banner he was given all these long millennia, he was sent to the Unbroken Vow by the lord Purgator and serves loyally
