Only War Introduction (Pre-Game Topic)

Would be ok with Schola? I guess my guy would be more of a trained marksman*, but that works?

*as opposed to a talented, press-ganged poacher if it was Frontier World!

I'd probably pick Frontier first, though.

Survival and Navigate are worth it alone. Dispersed formation even more so.

Cut off from sustenance supplies? No problem.

Cut off behind enemy lines and your data slate don't work, and satcom is down? No problem.

Need to find a scumbag evading you, and want to make a skirmish/search line? No problem.

I'm not sure I'm properly understanding how the Regiment rules affect what gear you get?

You get a favoured basic and heavy, which makes it easier to acquire, you also get 30 extra points at the end of regiment creation to add other gear such as weapons and equipment - so it'll be easy enough to add a single longlas.

Remember boys, you have to buy Dodge and Parry if you don't come with 'em.

There's still your doctrines to pick from yet which can give skills too! I can't remember which (if any) give Dodge and Parry.

Just so we can rule it out, can you agree with this post if you're in favour of using an existing lore regiment (e.g. Cadians, Valhallans) or disagree if you're in favour of making an entirely new one, respectively.

I'd assumed with doing a Homeworld, we were doing a DIY? I'm happy either way, but I'm leaning towards DIY. So, disagree? I'm not using the Reactions for that, it will impact your rep without merit.

Yeah, disagree.

But I realised the Frontier Regiment I was creating was basically Tanith 1st and the sniper was basically Larkin…

so I'm changing my vote from Frontier to Fortress or Schola.

Daniel Hagman, from Sharpe.

Fehr Englund Chames! Wait. Wrong one.

Thee dun't jest wander intee Mordaw. No...hang on...

Haykeswill, Yer Bastid! There we go.

EDIT: Then again, if you're read Gaunt's Ghosts (I have not) I am led to understand you've read Sharpe (I have).

Don't mind either way, but DIY (especially by committee) could lead to an interesting combination.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Gaunt's Ghost for inspiration (except if you take Cuu as the inspiration)

Can one of you guys set up a group message for me please with all players - so I can share links

Done!

No I've never read it, but I have watched a few of them

Frontier world does look interesting with its ability to spread out comrades, which i'm sure will be useful for things like medics and ordering your comrade to hold the door.

Yeah, I think I'm back to Frontier World as my vote... it's easily one of the better ones?

(Sorry to be annoying GM! )

I'm just trying to mentally distinguish them from Tanith Light Infantry... maybe, if we did go Frontier, we should go with a 'standard' Line Infantry Regiment - lasguns, full Flak and grenades is nothing to be sniffed at?

Picturing a tough Frontier Regiment, maybe from a more mountainous, sparse world rather than thick forests or jungle?

So standings appear to be Frontier as first choice, with Schola a few votes behind.

Frontier World

Spoiler

Cost: 4
Characteristic Modifiers: +3 to any two of the following Characteristics: Agility, Ballistic Skill, or Perception.
Skills: All frontier world characters start with Awareness, Linguistics (Low Gothic), Navigate (Surface), and Survival.

Life on the Verge: While frontier worlders are sometimes less refined that members of other regiments, their skills in the field are undeniably useful. Frontier world characters gain
the Combat Sense or Quick Draw Talent.

Independent Operation: Frontier worlders are more accustomed to working far from others than many of their counterparts in other regiments. Their activities on their home planet often call for them to range far and wide, often alone, and as a result they develop a sense of confidence in this solace. On the battlefield, this frequently translates into a willingness to strike out beyond the sight of allies, confident that their compatriots will react swiftly to danger. The Comrades of a frontier world character count as being within Cohesion so long as they are within 15 metres of their Player Character.

Distrustful of Authority: Though they are valued for their ability to act independently, frontier worlders can also be difficult to control thanks to this tendency. This can be particularly problematic for newly raised regiments placed under the command of officers from outside, or for regiments merged with others after suffering losses. However, with time and patience, this friction can be overcome by outsiders who prove that they can stand on their own and contribute to the regiment. Frontier world characters tend to distrust outsiders, especially those handing out orders. They suffer a –20 penalty to Interaction Skill Tests made to interact with unfamiliar figures of authority (such as new Commissars, officers from other regiments. Senior members of the Ecclesiarchy and Adeptus Mechanicus, and other such individuals) and impose the same penalty on Interaction Skill Tests made on them by those people. These penalties can be waived at the GM’s discretion, if the frontier world characters are dealing with individuals who have earned their trust.

Starting Wounds: Frontier world characters generate their starting Wounds normally.

You don't have to make your choices on skills/talents until the full regiment is statted out. Start having a think and throwing brief ideas around about your homeworld's fluff, flavour, culture, etc.

Next up, Commanding Officer personality:

Spoiler

Source Personality Cost
OW Bilious 2
OW Circumspect 2
OW Choleric 2
OW Fixed 1
OW Maverick 2
OW Melancholic 2
OW Phlegmatic 1
OW Sanguine 2
OW Supine 1

For all of the remaining selections available after CO personality, you can be more free with your selections. You can have a maximum of one Regiment Type, but can have multiple doctrines (if you can afford them - remember that Drawbacks can award more points). Any leftover points go towards adding more items to regimental standard kit. After this we can add a homebrew step to get an individual item, e.g. Lysi's longlas.

Do we all get the Starting Talent from the Commanding Officer as well?

Afraid not, that one is specifically for the CO's statblock.

Or how about something completely different, say Mechanised Infantry, or Siege Infantry, really there are lots of choices that can move us away from feeling like a Tanith clone, even some of the choices that might feel Tanith directional such as Guerilla or Reconnaissance (and its many variants) can be played differently.

Or what about an Armoured Regiment, who doesn’t like to have a Leman Russ?

Supercontinent with a sea of grassland broken up by island of small mountain ranges. Historically each mountain range was the heart of a separate kingdoms/nations (due to ease of defending that terrain) and the grasslands were a ever changing set of borders constantly being fought over in small skirmishes.

Edit:

For CO I am leaning towards Maverick or Phlegmatic but probably fine with any.

I like it, gives it a Scottish Highlands sort of feel? Opportunity for inter-party conflict depending on which kingdom you are from?

However, this:

is suddenly giving me Wild West vibes, which would obviously work with Frontier? So maybe North American style mountains surrounded by scrublands?

A mix of Highlands and Wild West could be fun?

I'll meet you at the Loch at High Noon for a showdown.

*Bagpipe and whatever that distinctive sound in westerns is playing in background*

'I'm Connor McCloud of the Clan McCloud. Y'all.'

This pleases me. Y'all from Montana, and I's frae Monmouthshire.

The only niggle I have is that mountain troops are generally lighter infantry. Ain't no-one heaving a Basilisk up Ben Nevis.
