Machine God
It's a good job that Characters in Ogryn Regiments can only be non-support characters. It would be taking the Dumbness to another level. Imagine playing a character with -11 or - 13 Intelligence? Mazer Rackham
I should be writing one of my novels, but I appear to be procrastinating. Strange, as I've never done that before...anyway: Here is ma boi: Spoiler Conrad 'Blackjack' Thorne. Soldier. Hero. Imposter. Those were his terms. Once upon a time, they were known as the 21st Antares Stormtrooper Cadre: The Blackjacks. Not favoured, but neither were they scorned. Conrad Thorne was determined to be the Prime, because of the 30 men in his platoon, he was enlisted as the twenty-first. A lucky man, they said, born for it. Seven operations, in the same theatre, everything going well until Operation: Grim Jester. A combined ground and air assault, designed to crack open the nut of a rebel keep, and all the hardened shell to get at the poisoned nuts inside. Only, the heretics were waiting, informed by a mole in the Crusade force that the Blackjacks and all their pals were coming. The Operation faltered, as the joke was laid on the Imperials. Thorne's Valkyrie carrier was shot down almost at once, and the flight he was with suffered the same fate. For six gruelling hours, the Antares Cadre fought in the depths of a ravine blocked at one end by rocks, and at the other by an armoured spearhead. One after another, in almost rapid-fire succession, the others went down, until there were only five left, and one of them the officer, and another the last surviving pilot. Thorne fought in the hull of the Valkyrie, sheltering from all the grenades, bullets and lasfire the enemy threw. He ran from position to position, firing, ducking, moving, firing, to trick the enemy into thinking there were more of the Blackjacks inside. It's easy enough to pull the trigger on a dead-man's lasgun if you don't have look at the crater now occupying his face. Well, he can't aim it, can he? At the last minute, as the final charge gathered to wipe out Thorne and the survivors, he threw every grenade he could lay his hands on. Out of ammunition, he threw ration tins, bits of debris, bottles. He shouted, he swore, he tired, but he didn't stop. In the end, a blast knocked him unconscious until dawn. When he rose, he was greeted by the sight of broken enemies and friends alike. The Officer had died in the night, but the pilot lived, and would not shut up about how Thorne had saved him. That made him feel churlish, because he hadn’t thought about the useless bastard at all. Not the pilot’s fault – but if he had just shut his bloody mouth! They gave him a gallantry medal. He even shook the General's hand. That ravine didn't even have a name, just another map code for a topographical feature of low importance. Just another anonymous graveyard to the Imperium's wars. People called him a hero, and his exploits preceded him, but he wished they did not. How he wished, still. Maybe the new Regiment would be better. He stroked the carapace helmet’s scuffed and scraped dome, fingers finding the embossed shapes of the cards. The ten of clubs – the weapons of war, and the ace of spades, the ditch tool of the soldier. Aces high. Blackjack! Blackjack! We're ready to attack! Blackjack! Blackjack! We never turn our back! Blackjack! Blackjack – ‘All dead in rubber sacks,’ he said aloud, blunt. It wasn’t part of the mantra – just a post-script, or post-mortem, perhaps. The call came that his transport was delayed, and cheered him up not a jot. He ignored the eyes of the greenhorns as they stared at his sable dress uniform and noticed the stressed kitbag, initial dismissal of a preening idiot suddenly gone to wariness by his scars, beaten kit, and steady manner. Then they saw the medal, and soon the process would start all over again. Thank you for your service, Trooper. Let me get the door for you, Trooper. Not their fault. Not even when his smile of thanks was hollow – not even when all he could hear were the thunder of guns, the burning Valkyrie, and the snap of broken bones and split rocks. The irritating bloody peeping of ‘low battery’ from the lasguns…screaming the rallying call from hoarse, defiant, terrified throats…Blackjack! Blackjack! BLACKJACK! Something struck his foot! He was hit. Damn it all! Not now! He was struck again. This is it! I'm- He woke up with an almighty jerk, breathing hard. Settling a moment, he realised he was staring into the soft brown eyes of a woman. The tiredness around them showed her experience immediately. Her dress was that of a Sororitas Hospitaller. He looked down to see she had wisely kicked the only part of him not liable to lash out and kill her. The unwritten rule of those in the know: Never, ever, wake a sleeping soldier by the shoulder. Ever. Stand back – and kick his boot sole. 'My apologies, Sister,' he managed. ‘You were far away, I think. Are you with us now?’ she asked; or at least her mouth formed the words. ‘I don’t...I don't know.’ Desperately, he tried to sit up. Ladies present. ‘Recaf?’ He checked his chrono. He had an hour. With a nod he joined her, if nothing else to keep the dreams away. EDIT: Could the fine Moderator who approves this tell me what triggered the filter so I can avoid a repeat instance? Cheers. Lysimachus
Okie dokie, thank you very much to the gents who offered/were able to assist with reading materials, I shall peruse at my leisure... I don't really have anything specific in mind, or how our choices interact...? Maybe a regimental sniper? Is that a bad call? I don't really fancy doing a ratling, but I don't know if a sniper is possible (or just really, really rubbish?) outside of that archetype? Lord_Ikka
For me, getting a regiment decided on is the first step, as I have no specific archetype I want to play. I'll be able to work up a character from there. My preference for world would be something like Fortress World or Schola Progenium. We can work something up for sure, it's not just ratlings who make good snipers. Look to Weapon Specialist for now, then see where we're at post-regiment-selection. Also folks, we ideally need someone to step up and go for Sergeant specialty. Lysimachus
Frontier World sounds kinda cool, bit expensive (4) but the Abilities look quite good? Side point, but just seen the Sharpshooter Archetype in the Hammer book, looks like it would do the trick for a non-Ratling sniper? Fortress World: Provides bonuses to 2 of Ballistic Skill, Toughness and Willpower, alongside Common Lore skills. Talents included are Hatred (pick one) with a slight debuff, and either Nerves of Steel or Sprint. Also, must test against disobeying orders. Schola Progenium: Provides bonuses to Willpower and either Weapon Skill or Ballistic Skill, alongside Common Lore skills. Talents included are Air of Authority or Unshakable Faith. +1 Wound. Frontier World: Provides bonuses to 2 of Agility, Ballistic Skill, Perception, alongside Awareness, Navigate and Survival. Grants Life on the Verge (Combat Sense or Quick Draw), Independent Operation (Comrades can remain in Cohesion up to 15m away), and Distrustful of Authority (-20 both ways against unfamiliar figures of authority). Agri-World: Provides bonuses to 2 of Fellowship, Toughness and Strength, alongside Operate and Scholastic Lore (Beasts). Grants One With the Land (+10 to interactions with beasts or food crops), but imposes Blind to the Horror (doubles the first Insanity point gain and penalizes Scrutiny). +2 Wounds. 6 minutes ago, Lysimachus said: Side point, but just seen the Sharpshooter Archetype in the Hammer book, looks like it would do the trick for a non-Ratling sniper? Definitely, but you don't get Specialist Archetypes until you hit 2,500 xp - so something to work towards. Don't worry, we can start you off with a Longlas or something if you're keen on the idea. Lysimachus
Oh, I see... they aren't starting archetypes, they're like the DW ones that you progress toward? Scratch that, thanks for the heads up! 15 minutes ago, Mojake said: Don't worry, we can start you off with a Longlas or something if you're keen on the idea. Please, if it's possible. I'm not sure I'm properly understanding how the Regiment rules affect what gear you get? It looks like you can make a long-las (Basic) one of your Regiment favoured weapons, but that seems like a waste of the slot if only one PC (me!) wants to take that type of gun?
