For all that I'm not the biggest fan of the design (they look even less steerable than the previous design, which already looked like they would suffer from a very wide turning circle!) they aren't awful and they are at least still bikes with wheels. Man there is something funny about the old RT bikes being arguably the least impractical looking Space Marine bike design, even with the spiked wheels! Agreed, there’s always been a Judge Dredd thing going on with them. Totally bonkers. Anti Grav stuff just sounds like too much sensible nonsense. I highly doubt the number of people not buying Primaris outnumbers the people who are, and I say that as somebody whose never liked their fluff. The vast majority of Primaris haters have long ago bought into replacing their Firstborn with 99% Primaris armies, all the while grumbling about it - but affording GW their money all the same. I see a lot more Gladiators and Repulsors on 40k tables than I do Predators these days. I think they just know they can do two things at once: sell you Primaris while also winking at the nostalgia factor of tracked vehicles, kinda like with Terminators. "Oh yeah those giant Indomitus Termies who are way bigger than Chaos and 30k Termies? Uhhh, sure dude, you can totally say they're actually Firstborn under there if you want... haha, cool dude, sure, sure, whatever helps you sleep at night, just hand over the money dude." Either way, they're still getting your money and nearly everybody's still buying Primaris. The recent White Scars character on his Primaris Jetbike or whatever seems like foreshadowing for the inevitable anyway. That these are still called Outriders (incidentally also the classification for tracked bikes in Heresy) probably lends credence to them doing a different style of bike (probably jetbikes) in the future. Crimson Longinus
I like the outrider bike design, but I also like the grav-bike Suboden Khan has. I'd like to have both grav and normal bikes, but it would be hard to give them sufficiently different roles in the game. Perhaps, the grav-bikes could be ridden by phobos marines, and be some sort of super fast recon unit? As an enjoyer of the Light/Medium/Heavy paradigm I'm gonna argue and wish for both phobos and gravis bikers; the Phobos ones should be on dirtbikes, stepping on genestealer toes left and right, while the gravis ones get grav(is) bikes like suboden. Evil Eye
Re: Primaris causing the "biggest growth in GW history" this is incorrect; Contrast saved GW from going bankrupt (post Primaris even) and the lockdowns motivating a lot of hobby spending was also a huge contributor to GW's current success. I think Primaris coinciding with some very good fortune on GW's part should not be confused with Primaris saving GW. Anyway let's not let this devolve into another argument between fans of classic Marines and Primaris. Scout bikes returning would be nice, for certain. Attack bikes too, especially as their planned replacement (the Invader ATV) is slated for the chopping block. phandaal
Something else that came to mind from my own experience - Outrider kits have been dirt cheap for a long time thanks to so many unwanted box set kits out there. Wonder if that will hurt the sales of this new box, since people who wanted Outriders only had to be resourceful enough to use eBay to get them for way below box price for many years already. This new kit does have more options in it, so maybe that will get more people to pick it up. I just don't care for scout bikes, never really got the point of them. Otherwise I mostly agree with the rest of Evils post. I don't think Primaris is solely to blame for GW finding new found success, tho I do think they'd (naturally) downplay the impact it had. A new paint line for sure also didn't save GW on its own; it was multiple things plus also the pandemic giving a good reason for a lot of people (and in American cases, a good amount of free extra spending money) to splurge on inside hobbies. Orange Knight
GW's exponential growth started in 2017, long before the pandemic. Do you know what happened in 2017? Oh, sure, definitely, and I'm not saying otherwise. I think this may largely be a creative decision that's not important enough for a whole lot of management involvement. It's also possible that certain subsequent Primaris models like the expanded Grav Tanks released in 9th didn't sell as well as hoped, while Leviathan and its new-but-mostly-unchanged Terminators were apparently absurdly successful - like, possibly the best-selling product in GW's history - and that's motivated GW to go in a more conservative direction. Hell, both could be true! Or neither, and there's some other sset of reasons for this that we, as consumers, are blind to. Regardless, whatever's motivating it behind the scenes, I think we're definitely been a change in approach, with GW starting to prefer simply re-doing older Marine concepts in Primaris scale rather than pushing for new things. brother_b
I like the bikes. Although my white scars army is mostly foot sloggers and generally performs like a regular army. I of course want to add that chunky quick bike squad so the options are appreciated. I wasn’t a fan of Primaris not because of the models, I thought they were always pretty wonderful if a little plain. My issue was all of the Miniatures I had spent time and money and battled with over the years that were obviously going to be invalidated. I think a lot of people’s angst revolved around that reality.
