A techmarine's tale

A bolter is supost to be .75 cal. Lets see a .50 cal is 12.7 × 99 mm so a bolter would be firing 19.4 x 1.48 mm rounds. Based on the STR of the two weapons a Heavy bolder should be firing roughly a 23.28 x 1.78 mm round. So that would get you a .92 cal (rounding up) round. Of course this is all based on mathmatics so I have no idea if it is what G-Dub uses, math that is. I guess you could just rount that up to 1.00 cal

Chapter seven:

The small ship to ship craft was horribly cramped. It was designed to ferry supplies like food and ammunition; not people.

Certainly not twenty six fully armed and armoured space marines.

"Quintus, must your servo skull buzz around like that?"

"I have no control over Kabal, you know that." Quintus was lying of course. He had complete control, but he used the servo skull to reduce tension, scout ahead, take pictures, and it was getting better at fetching him drinks.

"Well put a leash on it or something, before I shoot it."

The kettle (the marines named it after a few very warm atmospheric entries) flew ever closer to the collided ships. They still hung dead in space, their hulls intersecting each other.

Quintus lead a small squad of assault marines and two squads of tactical marines, the twenty six of them did a brief prayer before planning out what they would do.

"Tactical squad three will secure the upper decks, tactical squad four, you secure the lower decks. Caesar, your squad will accompany me to the point of impact. By now they'll have been informed that we're here to assist, but watch your backs all the same."

As the small ship docked, Quintus drew his force blade and hefted a power axe instead of his usual bolt pistol. Standing back and shooting was rarely an option.

+++++

"We thank you for your assistance Mon Keigh. Help us spare no one, for they would not give us such mercy." To this, Riddick merely nodded. The reports and stories of Dark Eldar torturing their prisoners were known widely across the Imperium.

"Tactical squad three in position." The sergeant acqknowledged on his vox before replying the same. Both tactical squads had dispersed themselves throughout their respected areas. Each marine was given an intersection to guard, and each was bolstered by ten guardians - the guardians would provide cover fire and in the event of close combat, each marine would engage the comparitively frail Dark Eldar.

+++++

Quintus leaped over a fallen beam, kicking one of the Dark Eldar in the head. The shrapnel of their weapons bounced off his armour and riccocheted around the corridor. It was mostly harmless to him, but it was effective against the Eldar, so they kept back. Caesar's squad was on point; they rounded up the stray Dark Eldar raiders and led them to rout and ruin.

Quintus and Prince Rain were back to back, surrounded by the Archon's retinue, until Rain backflipped and using Quintus's power pack as a springboard, moonsaulted over the halberd-like weapons of the enemy. A few quick slashes from his blade reduced three of the retinue to just another few bodies on the floor. Quintus forced a handfull of the vile aliens back against the bulkhead and used the bulk of his power armour to crush two more into the deckplates. Rain shot his twin linked shuriken pistol at the Dark Eldar that Quintus had psychically shoved, the small projectiles finding minute gaps in their armour.

+++++

Sergeant Riddick crushed one of the aggressors in his powerfist as he shot his combiflamer's one immolation charge down a corridor setting more of them ablaze. Some of his marines tallied how many they had killed, some how many more they had yet to kill; to each their own, Riddick mused as he threw the corpse down the blackened hallway.

+++++

The Eldar defenders morale was shaken when the marine assigned to guard them was forced down onto one knee

under the combined weight of the attackers. They opened fire, trying to shake them off, but the real help

came in the form of a hail of 1.0 caliber bullets from brother Cambrius's antiquated heavy bolter.

+++++

The Archon lunged at Rain but just missed him. This was a dangerous game of cat and mouse, and as one famous navigator said "There's only one way to win at a game of cat and mouse is to not be the mouse."

True, the Archon's attacks were quick and deadly, but Rain was slightly faster. The Archon's claws tore through the end of Rain's purple robe but his inertia kept him going; right into Quintus's flying power axe. Just how they planned it.

+++++

Meanwhile on the bridge of Maximus's ship..

"Zoom in on grid A7."

The screen zoomed in on one piece of space debris, and Maximus grinned openly, snatching up his helmet.

"Get out of my dreams and into my car!" were his excited words as he left the bridge.

What! :woot: I've been added to the story? I'm ever so humbled NemFX. Thankyou so much. I must add you now to my own story. :)

Chapter seven was brilliant! I haven't faced Dark Eldar (yet) but at least I know noe how to deal with them on ships. :lol:

Would you be horribly upset if I said it was a random coincidence? I was trying to come up with a name for a marine I've had since the 2nd edition but never named.. But yeah, glad you like, he can be named after you if you wish. He's an old heavy bolter wielding marine, and he has the shoulder mounted kind. The way you beat Dark Eldar, btw, is to first remove the flying machines with missiles or vehicle mounted lazcannons then decimate them with heavy bolter fire.

.. Though, that pretty much is my strategy for everything.

Okay, well here's something I have used: I attacked an archon + retinue with a close combat scout squad and beat them pretty much to a draw (i.e. my captain and 2 scouts lived, he had his archon still) which goes to show you that they aren't so tough in close combat.

But one of my favourite tactics is a simple one: 10 man devistator squad. 4 heavy bolters, leader needs me to make him some wargear.. Behind them is a 10 man assault squad without jump packs. 2 flamers and the sergeant (Caesar) has a powerfist and a combi flamer. The devistators get to do their thing, if anyone tries to challenge them, then Caesar's squad simply rushes foreward and wipes them out with fire and close combat.

Unfortunately, I haven't played properly since third edition, so I'm rusty, but the tactics work if you don't mind leaving the enemy to do the attacking for the most part..

Thanks again for the tips NemFX! I'll be putting these on word and putting them into my "Battle folder".

Any more news on the future chapters?

PS: My friend was very amused by the servo skull serving beer. he may make a conversion of it for the SW.

I was going to put in a line about Kabal getting damaged and Quintus being all like 'Nooo my porn's in there!' but I couldn't fit it in.. Maybe at some point later on..

I have the next two or three chapters ready to type up, I was just hoping for some feedback since that chapter is one of the few that plays out like your usual 40k story..

This is great. I mean, REALLY great. I only found it today, and may I say, this is the best stuff I have ever read, espeicaly since its about the best marines ever devised, the techmarines. And its the best techmarine stuff I've ever read.

P.S, do you mind if I "borrow" some of the names? Its just I'm rubbish at making the names. I will change them slightly.

Keep up the great work.

Go for it. You might notice that the names (literally just about all of them) are in fact refferences to other things.

I'm glad you like. The next few chapters won't really have as many refferences to things because it's kinda a tie in to something else (a brief Ultramarines / Fighting Tigers crossover) that I'm writing for the guy who made them.

Anyways, in October I'm gonna pause the progress on this story and write a story for a chapter I like (SoD. My only hint.) then I'll continue on for a short while then see how things go..

I'll type up the next chapter tonight. See what a little comment will do for you? :teehee:

Chapter eight:

"During that last battle, your squad was sloppy." The brilliant but stern voice of brother-captain Maximus filled the small ready room.

"As you are, no doubt aware, we have been assigned a new defensive lieutenant. Which means I've been promoted to captain of our offensive forces."

"Yes sir" Veteran assault sergeant Caesar said, while shushing his squad's chatter on the private communication lines.

"Luckily, the lieutenant will be bringing a number of assault marines, so you can teach them what you've learned when you get back."

"Get back sir?" Caesar asked, more than slightly confused since they were in a remote area of the galaxy.

"Yes, as luck would have it, the next time we come out of the warp, we will be only a few days journey from a planet known as Veda. Home to a fellow space marine chapter, and apparently they specialize in close combat."

Unbeknownst to the five marines sitting in front of him, Maximus, who did not normally wear a helmet, did have an audio receptor over his ear but hidden beneath his long hair. He patiently waited for the chatter to die down before continuing.

"The only problem is, some of our brothers have already visited and left a bad impression that I would like to try and correct. Read all you can about Veda and it's people before you get there. I'd like for us to make things right. You'll be there for awhile, so learn all you can, then we'll rendezvous once your done."

While the information wasn't exactly comprehensive, the five of them cut their hair into short mohawks and the two who used flamers considered leaving them on the ship when they read about the devistating brush fires. They later reconsidered them when they heard that monsoon season was coming soon.

While the Fighting Tigers did use jump packs, Caesar and his squad chose to leave them behind, so as to not frighten the locals. The time on the ship felt slow, but eventually the time came.

Captain Maximus and chaplain Pelagius waited in one of the launch corridors with an unpainted suit of artificier armour holding an iron halo. The five assault marines were confused but said nothing.

"Recently, the Fighting Tigers lost one of their leaders. I have asked Pelagius to give this armour his blessing. You are to deliver this-" he motioned to the suit "to Raja Khandar Madu, who leads roughly half of the chapter."

"Their chapter has two leaders, but the chapter master still can run the show." Explained Caesar, who usually studied up on the leaders of other groups.

"That is correct. This armour is to be given to a newly appointed leader, who goes by the name of Bahl during an inoguration ceremony. It's my hope that this gift will make them forgive our chapter's past mistakes. That doesn't mean you can get away with whatever you want. Remember, you're the guests. Follow their customs, and do as they do. Eat the food, talk to the people, and try not to screw up."

After Pelagius blessed the armour, it and the five marines were loaded into a drop pod, then fired into space.

+++++

The pod rode the wave course into the atmosphere, gradually slowing as it decended.

"Beginning EDL procedures." Veteran sergeant Caesar said into his helmet communicator.

EDL or entry decent landings were normally handled by the pod's machine spirit, but since they were trying not to spook the locals, Caesar did it himself. With careful bursts of the re-entry rockets, he smoothly landed the pod in a quarry not too far from the Fighting Tigers base. As the hatches opened, they were surprised to see at least twenty marines already surrounding the pod, and one of them was actually restraining a real tiger.

"Welcome. We've been expecting you." a voice called out.

A marine, presumably their commander came foreward. The marine's helmet, shoulderpads, greaves and bracers were white with black stripes. Except for the gold aquilla on the breastplate, the rest of the armour was black. The marine bowed while covering the skull on it's helmet with it's left hand, then made a gesture with both hands that the Ultramarines did not understand the meaning of. Caesar stepped foreward and did a passable imitation of the greeting then spoke.

"Hello and greetings to you and your men," Khandar smiled at this inside her helmet, "We come seeking audience with the leader Raja Khandar Madu. We come bearing a gift and seek training under his guidance."

The Tigers seemed taken aback until the apparent leader held up a hand to stop whatever conversing was going on via private channels.

"I can take you to the raja, but you must understand, he does not give training normally." the still unnamed marine said, "If you will follow me.."

The four marines in Caesar's squad each held a corner of the stasis capsule where the artificier armour was entombed. As they walked, the Ultramarines noticed some things about their hosts; while they walked through the forest stealthily they also made sure not to damage anything. Also, it appeared that either there were two different divisions, or possibly one was a successor chapter to the other.

They eventually got to the Tigers castle fortress, and although sentry heavy bolters followed their every step, they were all allowed in with no hassle. The fortress, while it certainly was large on the outside, looked quite smaller inside. Indeed the base seemed to just hold the many vehicles of the chapter.

"This Khandar Madu.. What's he like?" one of Caesar's men asked, their host replied without turning back towards them, "The raja? He can be brutal in close combat.. Normally he has a pair of lightning claws, but he was also given a combi weapon recently.."

"Is your vox caster okay? It sounds distorted.." One of the flamer marines asked while dodging a branch he desperately wanted to ignite. Why there was a tree branch inside the fortress, they weren't sure, but nobody seemed to question it's prescense. The question was casually dismissed as they heard the distant rumble of thunder, but one of the brown and orange Tigers explained "Might just be the humidity. Sometimes gets like that before monsoon season.."

They were led to what was loosely considered a throne room. In actuality it looked more like a shrine to a multi-armed diety. In front of the statue was a bowl of offerings, and there was a mat with what looked like extra armour.

Raja Khandar sat down on the mat and reattached her lightning claws and iron halo, then assumed a relaxed, almost medatative pose. The rest of the Tigers left to buzy themselves elsewhere.

"I believe you had something to ask me?"

Yes. The raja is female. The Ultramarines do not know this. In fact, the Fighting Tigers of Veda are approximately 1/3rd female, and the females generally make up the assault squads.

Hope that female marines doesn't scare anyone off.. But oh well, such things are trivial. If you like the story so far, then you should have seen this kinda thing coming.

Yeah, basically this is a little diversion from the main story.. I'm trying to decide what army they'll fight at the end. While i like this story, I didn't really plan it at all.

Anyways, expect a Hallowe'en story in the liber section from me once a person gets back to me on it.

I'm also planning on doing a story around christmas time, but it wont be christmas related..
