Kapturowskis Space Wolves [Update 11 Feb]

Decided to restart my Space Wolves now that the new codex is out. I used to play heavily mechanized, but now it seems like the Wolves favour a footslogging/cavalry approach to warfare. I don't think this really suits my old army and I love the 13th company and Wulfen models and fluff so I saw this as an opportunity to venture down that lane.

First, some music to set the mood: I - Warriors / I - Cursed We Are

This is the list I'm currently building towards.

I want the army to look like they have been fighting for a long time and so I will try to paint them very weathered.

Below is my concept for the Grey Slayers color scheme. I've added a lot of brown to the shadows and tried a glowing eye effect to give them a more supernatural appearence. I'll probably change the colours on the aquila to bone colours. I'm going to buy snow flock to base them, this is just a temporary solution.

Here's a comparison to my old Wolves.

Here's a WIP of Jorin Bloodhowl (count as Grimnar).

And here's a WIP of my Rune Priest.

Anyone who knows where to get hold of 13th Company transfers?

I'm converting my Wulfen models for use with the new Codex. I've given them Bolters and Boltguns since they seem to be able to handle them now :). Theres some filling left to do.

The glowing eyes are the most noticeable feature of the models. The red looks smooth, and very blended together. I really like your Grimnar stand-in. It is a very simple conversion, but it really looks like a re-vamped version of the old, 3rd edition model.

I myself have never been a fan of the chain polearm. It reminds me of those garden tools you use to cut down high up branches. If you swapped it out for a power sword blade, or even the same axe-head you used on your Grimnar, it would look a lot better.

Give your gold a wash of GW's Devlun Mud in the cracks and a highlight of Burnished Gold on the very ends. Contrast is key in miniature modeling. Since you're looking at them from so far away, the contrast helps the eye make out the different colors. It would be like giving your models blue eyes rather than red.

The snow bases look pretty solid, but it is all one color. I think if you layered the snow on top of gravel with some static grass poking through would do a lot more for the model. I also think a black rim would be better looking than the brown one you're currently using.

Hope this helps. ;)

Great to see some more of the new Space Wolf plastics and these are definitely being put to good use. I really like your test model for the Grey Slayers. That grey is very rich, though as Alpha said, I think the gold could use another wash or two. The glowing, illuminated eyes are done very well; that orange-ish, red hue contrasts well with the rest of the model. I think my favorite part of the model is his base actually, it could use a little work and cleaning but that frosted, harsh snowy scene is very expressive of the Space Wolves. I'm also a fan of your Grimnar 'counts-as' Wolf Lord. The posing looks perfect, and I'm looking forward to the finished product and any more of your work! Good luck on your endeavors, I'll be watching. :devil:

Great work on those guys. Like everyone else has said, the glowing eyes really stand out but not in some crazy way. Those eyes really look like they are glowing. Great models and good use of the brown to shade your gray. Good work man!

Obey the Emperor.

The Bloodmaw wolf lord guy is said to change into a wulfen on a full moon, so you could be able to use a wulfen there as well, as a generic wolf lord, or as a ragnar stand in maybe.

I like the Logan counts-a, very representing in his role

Thanks a lot everybody!

@Token

Yeah, they will be used with either Grey Slayers or Storm Claws to represent Mark of the Wulfen.

@Alpha PTP

I wanted to emulate the Grimnar model a bit. The Rune Priest was built to be used with the old codex, but sadly never got to see any action. I had him equiped with a Frost weapon so the chain part was made to emphasise that. But the current Frost weapons seem to be able to take on different form. I'll have to consider this.

I think I'll swap the golds for bone colour instead.

The basing is temporary, ordered some snow flock, so I will try to give them some more attention.

@Darth Potato, Seva, Sons of Horus

Thanks!

@Marshal2 Crusaders

Hehe. I'm pretty sure I'm not the first one to do it, don't get sad :).

@Alienerd

Yeah, that's definitly an option.

Ok, here's my first Storm Claw. I love the new Space Wolf plastics, they are so full of options that it's hard to decide what to do with them! Only thing I miss so far is Combi weapons, but I tried scratchbuilding one.

@barek

Thanks!

@commander alexander

Thank you! I will do a step by step with pics, but meanwhile I can tell you how I do it.

  1. Basecoat with Adeptus Battle grey
  2. Light drybrush of Codex grey
  3. Light drybrush of Fortress Grey
  4. Wash with Badab Black
  5. Lightly drybrush Codex Grey again, trying to keep in mind where you have your primary lightsource (top down for me)
  6. Drybrush Fortress Grey again, still trying to keep in mind of where you have your lightsource
  7. Next, I do a highlight with Fortress Grey, making sure it's about 1/1 paint/water to get a smooth highlight and painting the most prominent areas
  8. Diluting Vermin Brown heavily with water (I guess it would be something like 1/9 paint/water) I wash it into recessed and shaded areas
  9. I reinforce the Vermin Brown wash with Scorched Brown, diluted to the same level as the previous wash, trying to paint inside the previous wash to get a blended effect
  10. Then I give the whole model a wash of diluted Scorched brown
  11. Paint some small highlights with Fortress Grey to the most prominent areas
  12. Add scratches with Scorched Brown highlighted with Fortress Grey

I don't thik you tried to do a combi weapon, you more like suceeded tremendously. I have to say thoug tht that helmet is my least favourite head ever, I don't know if it is how angled the eyes are, but non th less, I love your grey, nice to see some les blue grey puppies around

the paint scheme has a much darker feel to it which i love! your rune priest is my favorate (dont tell khorne i said that) , i really want to see it painted.

the combi weapon looks great, the longer barrel suits the weapon.

keep up the good work

@Alienerd

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Now that you say it, I can see that it's a bit odd, maybe the eyes are a bit to close together?

@Lord Ragnarok

Great. Love your Wolf Priest conversion BTW.

@sword brethren

Thanks! I'm still adding some stuff to the Rune Priest to update him for the new Codex, but hopefully I'll get to him soon!

Here's a painting in progress of my Storm Claw. Only a couple of details left before I get to the basing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/kapturowski/13th%20Company/13_th_co_stormclaw_pip_01.jpg

I decided to paint the scavenged armour parts in the same colours as the original parts. I guess they would repaint the parts as a part of the cleansing of the Chaos taint.

wow that looks brilliant, a perfect combi of imperial rightiousness and chaos fury which make the 13th look awesome, i agree with you that they wouldnt keep the armour the same colour, i thought it was just me :P

keep up the good work :)

@sword brethren

Thanks. It nice to find people with similar ideas :).

I've put together a list that I'm currently building towards, you can find it here.

I haven't decided yet if I will build the Thunder Wolf Cavalry as mounted Space Wolves or as Werewolves, I think both are nice so we'll see how it turns out.

I considered doing that too, but decided to use them as Mark of the wulfen upgrades instead. I want something big and imposing for my Thunderwolfs. Perhaps I'll go for a mix.

Been alternating between painting and building, started building a Lone Wolf. Since I have them with Chain Fists and Storm Shields I had to do some carving to move the Storm Shield to the right hand.

I'm not sure if I'll go with the wolf head helmet or not. What do you guys think?

I really like what youve got going here, your painting is top notch, and the grey is perfect for 13th company. I thought i'd post another song up here for you, to aid in your glorious battles:

Viking Song (dunno the real name)- Dethklok

Cant wait to see more!

I think you are doing a fantastic job! Absolutely love the paint job and think that combi melta is easily the best conversion i've seen - not too much melta for a single shot weapon.

In response to the wolf head helmet, "I have to say though that that helmet is my least favourite head ever". I do think it is very daft. I think a bare head with lots of hair would work a lot better.
