A little experiment

I'm throwing this out there as a little experiment. I am considering whether I should publish my stories as an e-book on Amazon, but also as an audiobook.

This passage is me reading the previous entry to my blog and I'd really like some honest feedback. Even if you say "Shut it, GSCUprsing!" that'd be more than welcome. All feedback and constructive critique I take in-hand and I will thank you for it.

Please bear in mind, this is a pretty rough cut. My smoke detector is going off in the background telling me it needs a new battery, haha!

Going to be honest, I think you read very well, and I found it an enjoyable listen.

I would say that I am a little ignorant of Amazon's policy regarding your plans. The problem  is that I have published through Amazon KDP a few times, and the problem is that they charge a minimum delivery fee for the book/work. I've never been able to set the book as free other than as a timed, once-in-90-days-special. The problem this causes is that the IP is not yours (as you're aware of course). Unlike original artwork, you can't profit by it, and must state that your work is Fanfiction.

GW policy wording can be copypasted onto your document.

I think if you're looking into publication, look at Calibre. This will allow you to publish your Docx as a PDF, EPub or Mobi file, and will give you the opportunity to attach your own cover with the disclaimer. You have to be very careful, as the lads who did the Liber Badab found out. Note that you CAN use KDP to format your book as well, just be careful about uploading it to Amazon.

All that being said, I think you should proceed. Your narration and script/writing are good - not my bag - but good all the same. Have a good look at Amazon's terms and conditions, and see if you can't spot 'audible' alternatives - I am certain I have found some in the past, but it has been a while since I researched publishing methods.

Good luck, and keep going.

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to write back to me. Yes, I am aware GW can be a little, let's say, 'litigious,' so I will definitely de-40K the text. In fact, this story started out as a GSC story, but has, quite unexpectedly, turned out to be more of a Star Wars rebel situation!

The mp3 I posted is a very rough draft. I just wanted to experiment a little. I worked in radio for some years and have all the tools, mics, software, etc. to clean it up. I am glad you enjoyed.

Thank you, again, for your advice.  I'll be keeping that in my pocket as I go forward.

The story does as it wills!

Did you indeed? Very interesting! We might have to talk again at some point (rubs chin thoughtfully) - you certainly have a good 'radio' voice.

Indeed. My Mum always said I have a face for radio.

On that theme, I sound about twelve, so my squeaky voice is certainly suited for print.

I wish you success with your work.

I'm glad you thought about removing some of the "shared universe" material. I think a good story can not only stand alone, but be more interesting, as I won't know how the story will end.

In shared universe stories, you can't really push the status quo too much.

If you blow up the USS Enterprise, you must create a solution that returns the ship to its pristine condition for further adventures.

In your own work, you can make your own rules... and then ignore them.

Thank you. I am a big fan of the lore of WH40K,. Its depth spans across of most of my 40-ish lifetime and I really enjoy reading the Black Library stuff. However, my story, which originally started out as a GSC story, has taken its own turn, so it feels more appropriate for it to become its own thing.

I'll continue publishing here, but, if I take it elsewhere, it'll be de-40K'd.

That said, without playing WH40K, would I have dreamed up our Narrator or Laska? Would I have created the stalwart bastion that is Brutus, the Malcador, or the terrifying howl of 329? I think not. I may have come close, but there is nothing like looking over from my keyboard in front of me right now and seeing 329 and the Iron Duke painted and ready to defend my Resistance guys and gals.

Having played and collected for some 30+ years, would I even be the same person without that influence? I think not.

After years of grief over the passing of my beloved wife, the hobby softened the blow as I could turn my hands and brushes to my models and for that I am most grateful. And I am grateful  for that distraction it gave me; to be creative in a time when I just needed something to anchor me to the real world.

I've probably said too much. Time for an early night.
