=] EVENT: Call to Arms 2026 [=
zulu.tango and 22 others reacted to Dr_Ruminahui for a topic
Call to Arms is returning for 2026!! I’ll be running it again this year, so you can expect it be largely the same as last year. Only one big change - in addition to standard and Jobs a Bigg'un vows, there is a new "Rapid Deployment" vow. We've all had that instance where there's something we suddenly need to paint RIGHT NOW. A Rapid Deployment vow will allow you to make an Emergency Vow that you may work on immediately, out of sequence with the standard vows. Unlike Job's a Bigg'un, it must be completed before completing any other vows in that Stronghold. WHEN: 15th June to 15th September 2026 The Stronghold threads will be posted and locked for two weeks prior to the Event to allow everyone to familiarize themselves with the rules and points value for the Event. WHERE: Work in Progress Forum in the Forge The Strongholds will once again be located in the WIP Forum in the Forge. Rally Points will be located in each Forum for that Faction and will contain Faction specific points values. These are also intended to act as hubs for strategizing and organizing the Forum's efforts with a Stronghold. WHAT: For those who didn't participate previously, each model is assigned a points value, based on it's size, complexity, and time it takes to paint (generally). For example, a Primaris Intercessor is worth 1 point, but a similarly sized Primaris Captain is worth 5 points, this is because typically the Captain will have more detail, and generally be painted to a higher standard, taking more time. Models MUST be pledged to their Stronghold, designated by the Forum's location within the B&C's structure: Astartes, Imperium, Chaos, Xenos and Heresy. Any models that fall outside of the Strongholds, such as Necromunda, Blackstone Fortress, terrain, etc, may be pledged to ANY Stronghold. You may participate in as many of the Strongholds as you wish, having 5 Vows per Stronghold: 3 Vows that must be completed sequentially, 1 Jobs' A Bigg'un Vow, this is for models worth 10+ points that may take the entire event to complete, and 1 Rapid Deployment Vow, described above. All Stronghold vows are "all or nothing" - you must complete all models in all vows for a given Stronghold to score for that Stronghold. For the duration of the Event, the Strongholds are competing amongst their consituent Rally Points to pledge and complete the most points worth of models, with Badges and bragging rights going to the Victors. Once the Event has concluded, the Stronghold will be measured against one another, for fancier badges, and ultimate bragging rights. As I'm not very good at arranging such things, I don't have any actual prizes lined up - should that change, we'll let you know. Here are the five Strongholds from the 2025 Event for you to peruse to get a better idea of how it all works. ASTARTES | IMPERIUM | CHAOS | XENOS | HERESY Feel free to contact me, @Dr_Ruminahui, if you have any questions.23 points -

Re terrain not being fair to certain unit types trying to score objectives, that used to be the point. Back in the day, one of the inherent ways that punished lopsided builds was that if you took too many monsters, cavalry and vehicles your opponent could just put objectives on the top floors of ruins and you wouldn't be able to contest them (or score if your plan was to dump troops out of devilfish or serpents). Now I know being penalized for making wrong decisions is a big taboo these days (see heavy weapons giving the extra bonus even if you still move up from literally can't do anything if you move of the past), but maybe not everything should be viable for every occasion?22 points -

I mean, he gets plenty of romantic action in the books, so there must be a bit going for him. Cain that is. On the faces, I did a workshop with Erik Swinson the other day and he showed the difference the paint job makes on a model. He redid the derpy Uriel Ventris model and it's a night and day difference on the same sculpt: I think the 'eavy Metal paint job just isn't all that suited to faces.18 points

Glad you can see it at least. this is a hugely varied hobby. People enjoy different parts of it, and have time and or resources for different parts of it. theres a huge portion of people that enjoy the hobby for the gaming, not the building and painting or the models - therefore wanting to get things to “tabletop ready” asap and leave it at that. Equally there’s a bunch of other people that have zero interest in the game but love to make loads of cool custom models, then there are people that love making terrain and cool scenic boards. There’s even people that take their enjoyment from customising their models extensively and learn to sculpt with putty or in the modern era, CAD, to do so, wonderful! Then there’s people who like to buy just specific models to paint for competitions and nothing more, hell there’s even people who love the setting and lore but have no interest in the games or building painting. There’s even some that do all of the above. all of those are 100% valid and no less indicators of a love for the hobby. We all could do with remembering that we are not the individual arbitrators of what is acceptable for the hobby, people dip their toes into different elements to different extents and that’s fine. i myself love all of the above except scenery, which I typically find to be a tedious chore to build, let alone paint. I’m a decent sculptor, a decent painter, I’ve customised most models I’ve made over many years in the hobby (some of which can be seen on these very forums), I have made gaming tables for personal use and worked on them for GW when I worked there. I’ve listened to and or read a huge portion of the black library offerings, I’ve watched most shows or films that have been made, I’ve played most computer games, I’ve entered painting comps (and won a few). so I just found the idea of you saying if i don’t want to make scenery, it’s not the hobby for me more than a little galling.17 points -

Thanks, fellas :) Ok, getting to do something I've wanted to do for AGES. We finally played Kill Team again last week and I've just finished writing it up into a proper, old-school narrative battle report. What do you guys think? First time I've done one of these in ages and would like to do more of them. I've tried to create some narrative hooks - namely, veteran Sur'gesh will now be promoted to Devastator sergeant in commendation of his actions on Relay Station Chi-Omega 714, and the Condors will be following up to find out who their mortal assailants were in future games...16 points -
I normally try to stay out of these debates these days, but as an "old hand" I feel like this applies to all sides and may draw me some flak. If we are genuinely resorting to telling people they are playing with their toy soldiers "wrong", then the spirit of what made this hobby all those decades ago is already dead.16 points

I think I'll call the Assault Squad painted. I only need to make base them and the 12MoH vow is done, too. Apologies for the strange green tint on the desktop in the group photos: I've now idea where it came from. Let's start with the worst bit: I kind of hate what I did with the tilt shield, but I don't want to redo it: Initially, I wanted it to be white. Then I painted on the yellow chequers and blue cross and... it all sort of blended together. I decided to glaze some purple over it and removed the paint entirely from the chequered stripe. I think it looks better than it did when it was white but, yikes - that wasn't the best of choices. On the other hand, I'm very pleased with the sergeant’s helmet - subjectively, I think it's one of the coolest ones I did. I also wanted to paint a charging-in-progress effect on the fist - as if the guy's running and energising the power fist in an attempt to shield bash his foe and then deliver mighty blow. That's why I decided to add some glow and lightning effect from the front and back, as if the main power generator is located around the middle of the weapon and, when fully-charged, spreads to cover the whole thing. It didn't turn out exactly how I imagined it, but I think I like it.15 points -

Man you guys are so gloomy. i thought it was a fun little video, their method for the intercessors was good and mirrors what i imagine most converters do too; come up with a small narrative behind the poses and who “their guys” are. Daz is a good guy, loves his space marines and is (in my experience) always happy to give hobby advice so it was cool to hear his thoughts on the models, and process that got them made. you can see the similarities with the grey hunters in the new intercessors, many similar armour details and mixing bits in much like the wolves which makes sense as Daz lead the wolves design too. Obviously they’re a bit more generic in terms of icons, they’re generic marines for any chapter. the reasoning behind the ancient was good actually and makes sense, it also ties into art nicely in that there’s usually a LOT of banners, but each company has one, so the others being specific campaign banners makes a lot of sense. the note on providing head swaps was good, whilst some don’t care about bare heads, I love them and giving the option without forcing it is great, and unexpected in monopose kits like these. the vanguard still have the armour variety and their poses look great from different angles, I like that he explained he wanted some that weren’t in flying poses and know that those ones have been well received too, but I like the flying poses so having a mix is again, great (and what i had done with some commissioned 3d prints I got a while back) the idea that the characters for both sides were designed in pairs is cool, it makes sense for when you’re just setting stuff up on display to look nice. the little note of part of the desire being to recreate some childhood feel for people was cute lol I do agree that references to customers and the public were a bit jarring, but that is fundamentally what we are. id have loved to see some of the behind the scenes maybe, but yeah, interesting stuff all the same (for me)14 points -

This hit a bit too close home. I think that personally, apart from being a missed opportunity, the introduction of Primaris-scale models had a huge impact on other stuff, simply by comparison. The older minis feel off, even though they're perfectly fine on their own and - arguably - offer way more than Primaris do when it comes to cool concepts. I still have ~15 squat-templars to paint that I'm adamant on finishing... but not now, I guess. I do hope that you'll continue with your Marines, though. They're one of the coolest kitbashes out there. I'm very much curious how long it'll take till GW redo the older kits. I'm quite confident that we'll reach that point within the next 1-2 editions, after they churn out the models following the Primaris design language that must have been in the making for years. *** With all the 11th edition stuff, as I'm sure you've all witnessed, I did more soul-searching and conceded that kitbashing Primaris minis is made a bit too difficult by the nature of modern kits. So, I'm attempting to sell the slightly clumsy Assault Marines, as well as a 4th bolter marines squad to make room for the slightly-upgraded updates. I've also cranked the notion of 'get only the models you like' up a notch. I want a squad of more dynamic minis but 1 squad is enough. I think that I've discovered that I don't like how much room these minis take up, i.e. their diameter when viewed from the top. The old running/assaulty marines held their pistols and swords in a 'boring' way, closer to their bodies, which resulted in a nicer gaming footprint. The new ones are more dynamic and opt for a more outreached arms' position. It turns out that this is more of an issue that I imagined. In the product photos, I haven't really notices that too much and/or hoped that it'll be easy to reposition the arms. Alas... This should also be my last squad of guys with this kind of modifications to the chest plates (though I have plans how to introduce more variety but I'll need the new kits to see if that works and with modifications to the abdominal armour. I tested a new method of getting some 'square', mkIV-inspired, knee pads and I think they turned out quite fine - I will reintroduce these to future conversions. I'll also be testing a new 'approach' to the round knee pads - I'll need to see whether simply removing the trim works for me or not. For the majority of my previous projects, I've extended the round knee pads using a bit of GS to make them slightly more oblong/tear-shaped. Since I've also noticed/discovered that the heavy bolt pistol is the same size and shape as a Primaris bolter, I decided to equip these guys with proper bolters and chainswords (let's say that they are an Assault Tactical Squad or CC Tactical Squad, okay?) by replacing the stubby mags with some from the regular Intercessors kit. I think that the tubes on the guy below are quite great - the best I've done. If I were able to quickly reproduce this, I'd be over the moon. Alas, the process is a bit too fiddly for my taste. Here's a close-up of the knee pads: And more focus on the bolters: These are also my test models for a new painting approach. As you can see, I've placed these minis on plasticard glued on top of MDF bases. These are supposed to be temporary bases for painting; after the marines are done, I plan to paint the bases separately and reattach the bodies on finished bases. The theory/intention is that I'll paint the bases more quickly (and perhaps to a better standard) without having to worry about the marines on top of them. I've also tested Vallejo's gap filler for the gaps left after modifying the knee pads (which seems to work fine), as well as adding a layer of gloss varnish to further seal the putty and the studs Im making with PVA glue. As you can see, I've been treating these guys as advanced test models. On top of all the tests at the conversion stage, I'm quite looking forward to trying the new process for painting out - I even came to realise that using the sponge won't be as counter-productive as I thought since the alterations already damage the plastic and leave a bit of texture. Do apologise if I'm a bit too rambly; it's been quite a long day.14 points -

Thanks! I'm glad you like them, In retrospect, I think I should've and could've gone a bit further, by removing the auxiliary thrusters and flaps. It turns out that after seeing the minis half-painted, I realised that they are more distracting and unpleasant that I imagined. Oh well, here's another example of my poor imagination ;) That's a great tip! I'll try it out the next time I get around to doing batches of green stuff bits. *** And here's a bit of the promised update: And some close-ups: And I started adding some glow effect to the thrusters, too: I'm quite pleased with how the yellows turned out BUT I should really get more yellow paints. Looking at the models now, I think a warmer tint would work better with the purple. Having said that: I'm not toughing these. The only thing left with the helmets are the eye lenses. All in all, I feel I'm soon to make a difficult decision. I'm liking using sponges for painting initial layers of colour more and more. I think they're great for a decent, striking and cool gradient that's a great base for adding more stuff later. This is what I tried with the helmets, by the way. The lighting in the photos is a bit too strong to see the result, but in person the helmets look a bit nicer. I'm also more and more inclined to use sponges for painting some foundations layers of entire models. The only drawback is the texture sponge-painting leaves - something, I fear, is unavoidable. I tried to dilute the paint, experimented with pressure and there's always this chalky finish to it. In the end, it wasn't that bad with on my Techmarine and - frankly - it's not as pronounced IRL as in the photos, but it's something that bothers me. Yet, the results are quicker and more relaxing. Hence, the difficult decision. The next squad that I'll be painting will be based on sponge-painting and drybrushing, followed up by a more more careful fixing-stage. Hopefully, this will result in a quality-looking squad achieved without the recurrent mid-painting crises.14 points -

I took the twitch of the Emperor's eye to mean "The Emperor is wracked by non-stop agony, guilt and shame from what His failed plan has done to the empire He built and the people who live in it, and He is suffering just as much- if not more- than the souls burned away to keep Him alive. My guess is they'll make it a time limited thing and whichever side loses gets theirs in the following wave of free Detachment drops. Now if that's the case, the question will be whether they'll officially declare that's how it'll work, or if the losing faction will just 'coincidentally' be among those gaining one in the first batch post-launch. I'm assuming these two Detachments are already written, so I can't see them just sending the losing one to the shredder for eternity.13 points -
Astartes aren't heroes and the Imperium isnt good, they are inhuman killing machines mutilated and bred to perpetuate a genocidal regime that grinds billions of people each day. "NOTHING THAT SAFEGUARDS HUMANITY CAN BE EVIL, NOT EVEN THE MOST STRENUOUS INHUMANITY. IF THE HUMAN RACE FAILS, IT HAS FAILED FOREVER" -The Emperor of Mankind That quote, imo, encapsulates what the Imperium is, a tragedy as it burns its own humanity to safeguard humanity, but what will they have saved when all that made them human is burned to cinders? I find it amusing that people turn their nose up at this, or try to talk it down. For one, like everything else, it's completely optional. Also, if I see entire tables of terrain painted like this, they will look better than 90% of the tables I've played on over the past 30 years. I have some nice gaming mats and terrain that I've painted myself for personal use in games I arrange, but most people really don't make anywhere close to the same effort with terrain as they do with their actual army models.13 points -

This type of behaviour is not acceptable at B+C. Plus, its largely devolved into the perennial go-around about people's opinions on the primaris models generally, rather than these models specifically (it is noted, kicked off by the pro-primaris camp this time round). As such, I'm giving the thread a time out and will unlock it later this week. Your orange using mod, Dr. R.13 points -

Thanks for the feedback and reassuring me that this was the way to go! While I did decide to limit distinguishing battle roles' by altering the livery, I figured I want to add at least some variety and with these guys, the choices seem to work surprisingly well. Probably not as fun as painting larger surfaces with a secondary colour, but the result definitely visually striking. Truth be told, I wanted to take a break from 40k and finish my AoS Sigmarine Guy-Commander-Person on a Stardrake (I'm not really into AoS lore and don't really care to even remember the name of what I'm painting), but I think I'll postpone that larger project and see how painting 5 guys will actually be like. And this shift in priorities could also be a great reason to test my v.3 conversions and do my bolter and chainsword guys... So yeah, I expect that I'll keep on posting here with another 5 guys. I'm not sure yet. I suppose, it'll be something simple. IIRC, box-art assault squads of old had simple combat shields schemes, with the board following the chapter primary colour. Since this seargeant is supposed to be a homage to the "original" Assault Squad (i.e. the box that was available when I started), I think I'll just paint it purple and slap a cross or some scribbles on and call it a day. On top of that, I think I'd like to finish this squad ASAP - despite all the time and passion I put into these, I'm not a huge fan of the poses and deep inside treat this squad as another 'test run.' I feel it's time to rush it and call it a day, similarly to what I did with my Tactical Squad sergeant’s banner. This is what I have after today's painting session. I quite like how austere it looks at the moment, too. But I think a splash of colour and/or detail won't hurt.12 points -

If you leave ambiguity, you will get people arguing or making different assumptions. A lot of people have been clamouring for tighter wording on rules for a long time and this is what it looks like. It ain't pretty but it gets the job done!12 points
