A Daemon army in 66+ some odd days

I wouldn't look at it that way. The more the merrier. All forums like these should have their hobby aspect reflected as well as the gaming. Since I model to game I appreciate reading threads on both topics.

So have at it. -OMG

BattleStar Galactica fan?

Do you think that you will add a greater daemon becuase i think that from how you paint you bloodletters a BloodThirster would look awesome.

Also, how did Skulltaker and his bodyguard do against the assault termies and their hammers?

how did you get that blood effect on the horn?

I use my “blood ink” concoction and stipple that pattern over the area. I give it a few seconds to dry and then blot it off with a clean napkin. If you repeat that a few times you get a pasty build up of varied concentrations. I’ll go back over it with the metalics (in this case) if the blood effect covers more than I intended. It’s hard to describe without demonstrating it first hand. Does that make sense to you?

Question #1: Yes, ever since I saw it debuted in the 70’s. I do like the modern version much more.

Question #2: Yes, but not Khorne. My 2K+ lists are all based on Kairos the Fateweaver. You never know though. I’ve always wanted to paint up a Thirster so one of these days I will.

Question#3: The Crushers slaughtered the terminators wholesale. Since every terminator had the new & improved hammer & shield all my models attacked first. Even with the 3+ INV save, the Crushers are getting 3 attacks each, hitting on 3’s and wounding on 3’s on top of Skulltakers 5 attacks. I did lose one model which I believe took a wound previously and Skull Taker took a wound. If he had some lightning claws in the mix he would have done a lot more damage. I believe it’s best to mix those assault terminators squads for that reason.

Most of the first crusher is painted up now:

I should get this guy done over the weekend for sure.

I’ve changed direction for my >2K lists and looking at using Fiends over Slaanesh Heralds & Flamers:

I’ve got plenty of units that kill infantry but without any monstrous creatures I have a hard time with Dreads. I’m thinking that rending beasts with Strength 6 should do the trick. Not that they won’t tear up infantry in their own right.

That’s the theoryhammer anyway. More game table experience forthcoming.

Yeah that makes sense, and it's looking good, I'm going to do my jugger in a brass colour, but the red looks good too. Love the ultramarine termie arm on the fiends base, and I'm interested to see how it turns out too, I'm hoping someone will show me that a good paintjob can make the fiends look good. Just one thing, fiends only have S5 base, and only one model in a unit can go to S6, though 5 and rending should be enough.

Hate's a strong term. No, can't say as I HATE them. I do find them one of the blandest of the 1st founding loyal chapters and I'm hard pressed to like blue marines. So I can't say that I'd ever do up an Ultra army myself. It's really do to their popularity that they became the subject of carnage for this army. I used multiple loyal chapters when I did my Death Guard and it came off as too unlikely (if that can ever really apply to 40K fluff).

So so particular reason. Just a nice color accent that followed along with the blue tongues.

I hope I didn't offend anyone's ultrasensitivities.

Firstly, Great Work! I just discovered this thread and I'm really really glad I did XD. Anyway, I have a few painting questions:

a) What is your blood ink concotion? I know you said something about red ink, but I'm a hobby noob and so i'd really appreciate if you explained it to me (I don't mean to sound pompous and I know it's a big ask, so don't if you don't want to ;)).

:) How did you do the brass colour on the juggernaut? Pretty straight-forward question, so yeah, any advice/methods/tutorial-esque information would be greatly appreciated :).

c) Finally, how do you do the red colour of the blood on the 'letters standard? I really like it because it is a rich, full colour, but it isn't over the top. So like with the brass, any method would be really helpful :).

Anyway, I know I'm asking a lot and overall, I reckon your army is really awesome :D.

Cheers,

Ninjastone

Not a problem. That's one of the benefits of the community; asking questions. In this case, I got off easy as the answers are all related.

a) The blood concoction: It's a 1:1 mix of GW's Red Ink (by which I mean Red Ink, not the new ink wash) and Iron Wind Metals, Chocolate Brown Ink. That bottle's hard to find now (I bought them by the case as not to run out). The combination makes for a thick maroon color which passes for the blood effect that you see here. If you're interested in the Chocolate Brown, Vallejo Smoky Ink is close.

b) All my metallics are basically base color + ink + highlight + ink + highlight where the highlight color is either the same as the base or a shade lighter. For gold/bronze I use GW's Burnished Gold + wither the Chocolate Brown again or the brown from the new washes (whatever they called it).

c) That standard is just the blood concoction smeared over a white undercoat. Smeared is a bit of an oversimplification but it doesn't take all that much to get the color to conform to the surface you're painting. In other words, the nature of the ink itself will give you a nice effect if you just let gravity & surface tension draw the color to go where you want it naturally.

Let me know if you'd like more detail but that's really about it.

BTW: That first Blood Crusher is done now so I'll post pics either today or tomorrow.

Cheers, -OMG

Here are some shots of the finished crusher.

There are a few more in my gallery (link in signature).

And I post this just for Capt. Malachi:

Seems like I have seen the light when it comes to employing a DP in the list. Now I just need to find some clear plastic fly wings to spice this model up a bit.

More later. -OMG

Oh man, you went the Ultraforge route! Too cool. I can't wait to see what you do with him  I'm pretty keen to get either him or the treelord for a Nurgle DP of my own. How did you find their services? And is the sculpt up to scratch?

I've admired their models for some time but this is the first I've acquired. Actually, I bought it from an eBay auction from an independent seller. So no direct contact w/Ultraforge themselves. As per the sculpt, it's better in person than in the pics. It's as detailed as a Forgeworld sculpt if not a bit better. Note that they have a, "Plague Daemon" model now also. I'm tempted to pick that one up also.

I'm going to add some bits from the GW Nurgle DP + maybe some bits from the new mounted Chaos Knights that just came out for WHFB. Still playing around with options so we'll see what all comes together.

any idea on what colours you'll use?

I'm going to go with the same pattern I used for my Death Guard army. Lots of bone color for the armor with olive green shoulder pads & helmet. Still, Nurglization will take precedence over all other color options.

Makes me want to get started on him right away...

-OMG

They ran into some IP issues when they first got started. In fact, the model I’m using here use to look even more Nurgle than it does now. After the legal line was drawn clearly, these are considered generic enough to avoid altercations.

That’s not to say I’d be able to get this model into an official tourney unless I cover it with other GW bits which I intend to do anyway.

-OMG

Oh right, don't suppose we could get a size comparison shot?

I’ll do so upon next opportunity.

So with the NDP and everything else what does this list look like now? Also if you were to use all you daemons how many points?

Here’s the 1,750 list:

Keeper of Secrets

Skull Taker w/jugger

Blood Crushers x4

2x Daemonettes x10 both with Icons

3x Bloodletters x8

Daemon Prince, MoN, flight, noxious touch

2x Soul Grinder both w/Phlegm

1,749 pts, 53 models, 5/11 scoring units

If you count assembled models I might be able to squeeze 2,000 pts into a legal list. It wouldn’t be a list I like per se but I’d have the models at least.

Cheers, -OMG

You’ve got to pay for them greater daemon points somehow. I chose to sacrifice a non-scoring choice before a scoring choice.

He/She can rejoin the crew either at 1,850 or 2,000 pts or so.

-OMG

I do ^_^

What's your problem, OMG? Why are you so good at painting? Jeez, the nerve of some people. ;)

Looking great, and I would love to see that prince painted up.

EDIT: 111 posts! does this mean... a new Chaos God?
