Lamenter's Actual Scale Space Marines

Not good enough to work at GW? Don't be silly, they would do well to have your talents working for them. There is the whole ~$150.00 per teminator thing though. Making that kind of cash for a model why would you WANT to work for them? Plus when you work as you do, you can keep putting up all the lovely tutorials and pictures for all us true scale freaks to keep looking at, pondering, and eventually trying to ape. Keep up all the good work. Your site helps a lot of people who are into the truescale.
How long has it taken you to hone your sculpting skills?

Been at Space Marines a couple of years, but I've a long time experience with lifesize sculpting, as well as various design experience.

Quick update:

Just a quick post to show the beginnings of my latest Artscale Terminator character - Abaddon.

The sword is to be based off of Be'Lakor, The Dark Master. The topknot is obviously from the original head but the metal head itself is just too tiny to use, hence the head swap. The claw I plan to scratchbuild to look something like the artwork from the Horus Heresy board game from Fantasy Flight games.

Could you do a tutorial for your yellow, including what primer you use? It's truly awesome.

That's a small tutorial for using old or more recent inks/washes depending on what you have.

If I'm painting over a black or dark undercoat I favour bubonic brown as a base coat and highlight up through golden yellow and skull white. Of coarse this approach isn't as easy as a white undercoat like in the tutorial.

This is my second attempt at the Talon of Horus, the first being mediocre at best so I started completely from scratch. I've spent a few days on just the talon by building each segment of each finger separately and really devoted a lot of time to it. Ultimately I wanted to use the previously mentioned artwork from the Horus Heresy boardgame as inspiration and make something that betters the much swooned over claw on FW's Huron miniature (not an easy task).

It still needs some more work but I'm very happy with how it's developing. In all, more than 40 separate pieces have gone into it's construction so far.

This turning out so well I'm giving serious consideration to making some more claws to get cast (yes, in pairs) to sell in an online store.

Lamenter those Talons look awesome. I can't ink right now for a more fitting word. I even went to the length of going to my bitz box just to take out a Temie PF tp appreciate the size & scale of what you are doing!!! You must have lots of patience & very steady hand-eye co-ordination. Very very similar to the picture, hats off to you!!!!

Thanks guys.

Very close to finishing this guy, hopefully will be done tomorrow.

Without a doubt this is my favourite conversion so far. I'll save the lengthy description of how I did it for the next post. For now enjoy and feel free to throw questions my way on how i did it.

Still to do: details on the belt buckle, the left knee pad, the shoulder pads, the daemon weapon, and the trophy spike tops.

Yes I would love some of those claws!

I'll be making some to cast very soon.

I forgot (as I always do) to take size comparison photographs. I can tell you that including the base he stands 75mm tall, which I'm guessing is almost dreadnought height (the trophy rack helps)

Without a doubt my favourite conversion that I've done so far. From what I started with I wasn't certain it was going to turn out as well as it has, but if there is anything that comes to mind through the process of doing this conversion it is the need to be willing to take step backward to actually make progress.

There are more (360 degree) photos on my website for anyone interested.

Nice model, but erm is the bullet feed the wrong way round?

Yeah you're right. After adding on the power cable I suddenly found no way to comfortably fit it on the correct side. It's a compromise.

Any tips on making our own claw? I think something along those lines would make an excellent lightning claw.

Can't wait to see what you create next.

Cheers, and good luck!

I crafted each separate piece of the talon individually and only when they were all made did I assemble them. Using 2mm sheet plasticard ensured that each finger/claw stayed the same width. The main tool is just a scalpel. I was always careful to cut the bits bigger than I needed and then trimmed them to size. Also used a liquid cement to bond the pieces together, superglue is just too messy on this size of join.

Technically this is a lightning claw. I like to imagine this is the pre-heresy design of lightning claw, though I have no official evidence. I personally dislike the post heresy design and never use them.

The next project (along side a series of claws for casting) will be an Alpha Legion Terminator.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is a bare bones Alpha Legion Terminator that will be pre-heresy. The claws I've been working on for a few days, initially as masters to be cast, however, I think claws on a slightly smaller scale would be better for resale (so I'll be starting fresh and using these on this model).

I'll try and have updates for in a few days.
