wooday_218
:) I've been following this thread for awhile , And I thought my thinking was outside the box but you sir have smashed it open and crammed it full of melta bombs ! Kythnos
http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh347/shortsonfire81/IMG_1746.jpg  :) What is that vessel in the background? Shortsonfire79
Dark Apostle Thirst: Thank you. I might, eventually. I'd like to add some freehand on all of my models, at least a little. Crusade badges, personal heraldry or something. But this is for a 'competition' and I only have a few days until its due. Thanks Wooday. I'll go check out your log, I can always use some more ideas to steal ;) Thanks Doghouse. Kythnos: The vessel in the background is The Glory, a ship that I made using Retribution, Battlebarge, and SM Cruiser pieces. The thread is here.  And TerminatorinHell from the B&C said that I should repose him to look like hes stomping on something. I argued that I couldn't get a stomping pose out of him, with his chest like so. So I met him in the middle. I added a bit of detail, and glued him together. I just need a couple rivets and cabling and I think I can call him done. :) http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh347/shortsonfire81/IMG_1749.jpg  And the servitors are done too I think. I can't stand guitar cable, so I won't be adding more of that, and I'll think about adding some rivets...maybe. http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh347/shortsonfire81/IMG_1750.jpg  Now to paint... I have 7 days...which I also have an essay and two exams in...this may be close. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2666093 Share on other sites
Shortsonfire79
I've started painting for the B.O.B, and I at the slow rate I'm going....I'm going to be squeezing it for the 28th... The servitors are halfway done. The skin is supposed to look like it does, since they are half living mechanical beings. We'll see what kind of update I'll have tomorrow night. ;) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1759.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2671144 Share on other sites
Dark Apostle Thirst
Hmmm, maybe a brown wash for the servitor skin? Other than that, looking good  Perhaps just leave a blank spot on your dreadnought's hull that's the same as the area surrounding it, and don't do a freehand until you have time? GooseDaMoose
I agree that the skin could use a bit of darkening, it's abit too, well, white at the moment :P Â But hey did you use a squad standard as a tabard for you dreadnought? Cuz that's a pretty cool idea. And the pose looks good this way, the top-heavy-ness actually works out pretty well! And the serviors are still looking badass as ever. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2672409 Share on other sites
Shortsonfire79
Thanks guys. :) Apostle: Thanks for the idea. Originally, I didn't want to add a brown wash to the skin, as I wanted them to look pale (gave them a blue wash at the beginning), so I ended up adding some brown wash to Dheneb stone (I didn't have any skin toned paint) and did that instead. They look a bit more human now.  Goose: Thanks. :D I solved the skin problem I think...hopefully. :) I did use a squad standard for the dread. One of the Dark Angel ones actually, since it had a nice border. I attempted to make it look wavy by bending it...but it just cracked and went back to its original position :D Thank you! :D  Alright, so I had to rush these guys since I wanted to get finished with them so I could play with my new toys. :D http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1770.jpg  Heres the Dreadnought, yet to be named.  http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1766-1.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1767-1.jpg  And the servitors. I added some brown around where the metal bits met the flesh, as I figure the flesh would be a bit worn. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1768-1.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1769-1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2674508 Share on other sites
Shortsonfire79
Another hour's worth of progress. These updates really suck, haha, I make a bit o progress, and I post a picture. ;) I should find something else to update with next time... I chunked out the blue and the black. Usually I'll spray the models, paint the bases, and go over the entire model in black, covering the parts missed with spray and cleaning up feet/legs. This time, I just went straight to blue after the bases, and then did the black. Much easier, looks the same, and I skipped the most tedious part of the whole painting process! Score! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1936.jpg  At this rate, I should have highlights and maybe more done by tomorrow...though I'm going out to San Francisco to visit the family again...Dang Chinese families and having to see each other EVERY WEEKEND!! Shortsonfire79
Thanks you three. That squad has been back in the foam for a few months.. :$ Since then, I have made a few new acquisitions. Mostly in the region of over priced resins, in the form of mkII,III, and IV. I had the pleasure of spending 9 hours clearing flash and mold lines off of these three squads of FW marine goodness...and I have yet to start on the bolters, heavy weapons, or conversion packs...so I still have a few hour's worth of work ahead of me. :) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2255-1.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2254-1.jpg Not only have I made some new acquisitions, a couple days ago, my father said that he bought a Dremel set from Orchard Hardware Supply during their weekend sales thing. $30 for 3 Dremels of different specialty isn't bad. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2269.jpg So I got to use those to clean out the underside of the marine torsos. Now I actually have an excuse to buy Dremel bits. ;) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2271.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2270.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2272.jpg For these guys, I think I'm going to make them my 'Second Company,' since I already started the First. Although the older armor (and the hopefully better paintjob) would suggest that these guys are of more importance than the other guys, I'm hoping to squeeze all 100 of these marines into a 2000 point game, if I ever run into the opportunity to play one. They'll be just like the Ultramarines, in the sense where the second company is more famed than the first. =) Since the school semester is still fresh (and this week consists of 2 papers and 3 exams) I'll be taking these guys slow...very slow. But in order to promote completeness, I will be (I think) assembling and painting them individually, and giving each a small story. Â So if you fellas see any bloops or anything on the models, I'd appreciate it if you would point them out, I want these guys to be near perfect. ;) Man...it is good to be back. Shortsonfire79
It'll never be dead! Thanks Dark Apostle.  Heres what I have so far, three days after assembly. (Which has to be a new high score for me) I think I'm confident enough with this to consider the blue done. It is still pretty dark, but to the naked eye, I think it looks pretty good. And I think that after that long break, this is probably the best painting I've done yet...which is actually quite pathetic, seeing as I've been doing this for so long.. -__- I really like the way the helmet turned out. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2276.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2277.jpg Black Spray Paint Chaos Black: Water 2:1 Necron Abyss: Water 2:1 Asurman Blue Wash Regal Blue:Necron Abyss: Water 3:1:1 Regal Blue: Water 2:1 Regal Blue: Ice Blue: Water 3:1:1 Thin Asurman Blue Wash  And to show you a comparison with the past. Left is the most recent, probably one of the better ones. Middle is current. And right is one of the first few completed. You can see that there has actually been some improvement over the months. ;) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2278.jpg  And theres a wee bit of spray coming off the etch where I handled it on the shoulderpad, but I think that after I give it a spray of varnish, that shouldn't be a problem...hopefully. :)  Physics lab and quiz tomorrow, then a midterm on Thursday. English paper due Monday, Psychology midterm on Tuesday, and Sociology midterm on Wednesday. Then I won't have to stress half as much about school and maybe do a bit more painting. :) Also got my  back, and its doing fine. The speaker still sounds the same though, which I think may be some sort of vibration when the comp is too loud... :/ Thanks all! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2874254 Share on other sites
Shortsonfire79
I hadn't started on the black yet, though I did put some basecoats on this fella.  http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2263-1.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2279.jpg  I'll be giving him to my sister's boyfriend, so I'll be working extra hard on this one. :)  I don't currently have that many tanks..but if I can get my hands on a couple of Leman Russ', then I'll be sure to convert them up. ^_^ http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2284.jpg  And at the point in time where I left my last message, I have worked on the black a bit. I don't currently have a Badab Black wash, so I'll be trying to pick up one of those after I go to UC Berkeley to visit my gf. Overall, I think it turned out decently, a bit light, but the wash should help bring that back down. I'm really hoping it brings it together actually, because right now it just looks terrible on the back! D:  http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2286.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2288.jpg  Also been playing the crap out of Minecraft again. Probably logged at least 18 hours in the past two days... -__- 18 hours that could have been focused to exam studies.. :P oh well. I think I did pretty solidly on my physics exam, there was only one I couldn't entirely do (out of 5...) so hopefully that won't be too bad.  And what do you think I should paint the rims of the armor in? I didn't really think I would be leaving them the same color as the armor, but I think that silver or gold would be far too gaudy... I dunno.. my paint selection is very small, and its not like all of my marines have this mk of armor with the lip. I'm also thinking of white bolter casings, I think they'd stand out in my army quite well. Though I am tossing the idea for basing back and forth.. I was thinking either a snow theme, mud theme, Or just the standard rock, grass, and dirt. :P I would like to try some chipping and weathering on these guys, but not all that much. :)  Thanks all. Hopefully I'll be able to update you again with the new black later. The Normish
Is that Boba Fett? That guy in the red loincloth earlier, what model is that? Shortsonfire79
It is indeed supposed to be Boba Fett. :) I'm glad you were able to kinda tell. haha. The dude in the red loincloth looks like he's from the Sternguard Squads, at least, thats my best guess. :P http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss63/Shortsonfire82/IMG_3019.jpg  Well, started off the day by waking up late-ish, and catching the bus to...wait, I posted this morning... So then. Got home about 15 mins before the game store closed, so I rushed over there to pick up a Badab Black wash, and the guy told me that they had a $5 minimum (I think paint pots are $4 now?) so I picked up another Chaos Black, I was starting to run low on that anywho. Logged a few more house on Minecraft (seems like 5 more) and then painted up this guy a little.  I like the way the black ink tied the grays together, even the parts that were pretty choppy. He may now be a bit dark, but I'd rather have the colors darker than lighter. I also put a basecoat on the metallics, just some boltgun metal. I'll hit it with badab black when I get the chance, and then mithril silver afterwards. As I was painting, I noticed several spots that needed touching up. I'll hopefully be able to get to those, because they were all on parts that the paint was mixed! ;) so we'll see how those turn out. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2291.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2292.jpg  Also painted up the bolter a bit. The white casing is pretty bright, but I think it'll look alright on this guy. I also did the metals on it too. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2293.jpg  This guy is coming along nicely, and after my two exams this week, I should hopefully be able to have him done by next Sunday. :D But..tomorrow the Cal Bears are playing Presbyterian (never heard of it) and then its my grandma's birthday...I think she's hitting 80something. So I probably won't be home until late, and I should probably start some hardcore studying...Meh... :( Oh wells! Catch ya all later. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2877943 Share on other sites
Ch@oZ
I really like Your work- the paint scheme is suitably grim, much better than the standard fists colour scheme and the way the Iron Pattern power armour turns out- the pouches and the etched parts all make them look very "commando"- like. The white bolter looks great, i r think it contrasts very nicely with the armour, which is great. Â Also- the Boba Fett guy is awesome, especially with the massive hunting rifle (bounty HUNTER after all). Shortsonfire79
Thanks Chaoz!! I was hoping to put them in a slight commando feel, though not a whole lot. Just like..feel equipment or something. Glad you like Fett too. :)   Alright, so I did a bit of sneaky painting tonight. Yesterday I finished the metals, so I touched up all the blue and black areas..then touched up the metal areas...then retouched up the blue areas... Painted the eyes, the pouches, the seal, I think he's pretty tabletop ready now...sans the base... http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2307.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2305.jpg  But now, the question stands, how do I paint the company colors? I did some deep research in the huge compilation of 'Index Astartes' that I have...and came up with these. Basically taken from the Dark Angels codex, and threw in some yellow, black, and blue (basically what I did with my color scheme, I think they're just blue Desciples of Caliban...) Excuse the crappy paintjob. :P I so far have three votes for both 2 and 4...which doesn't help me all that much...just need a couple tie breakers. :) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2308.jpg  And also, I have two votes for the base theme. Two for the snow, and one for the mud/snow...? So I'm still taking ideas for that as well. :) No progress on Fett in a while.. Thanks gents. Shortsonfire79
Alright, this should combine into a double post I think. So here it goes! I assembled him last night, and I just finished putting on some of the details for him. I'm pretty pleased. My dad just got home, so I probably won't be able to spray him to start painting tomorrow.. :( But, please take a vote on the company colors! :) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2309.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2310.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2311.jpg  AND, thanks to my sister moving out, I have inherited both her 7 tier bookshelf, and her 5.1 Logitech speaker system!! :D :) :D So I since I only have a couple shelves of books, I wonder how many marines can fit on a 10 x 30in shelf... We'll see. :) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2313.jpg  I also got this from Ikea, and I think its super cool, 8 x 4ft poster of the world. I just have to start marking it up where I've been, which has to be at least 10 different countries, and where I want to go, which is probably more than 30 countries.... :D http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2314.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2882866 Share on other sites

Shortsonfire79
I hate you. Hate you, hate you, hate you (in the most positive way there is ) The conversions you did here are totally brilliant  Haha, thats interesting. :) Thank you very much. Most of the conversion work is really simple, but it makes me feel happy that I can still do smaller stuff. :)  So..last night my skype friends and I were noodling around on the internet..playing Minecraft, Transformice (hilarious game! Good thing they say laughing makes you live longer, I'll probably be living an extra 8 years after all the laughing I did last night) and we did a couple d20 quests. (Yeah...I went to the nerd side.. ;) ) Managed to go to sleep at 4AM, and woke up at 8AM sharp! Which is an odd situation, because when I go to bed around midnight..I have trouble getting up, and end up feeling crappy all day...today I feel amazing! :P ^_^ Probably lack of sleep causing more adrenaline to pump through me...  But, while I d20'd, I was painting my second guy! Since it was so late, I didn't bother running back and forth to the bathroom to clean off my brush (and wake up my parents) so..I just...stuck it in my mouth... :$ ..odd... But it worked well, there wasn't too much color bleeding...I mean..I did the white gun after the blue and black. Thats not too bad. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2319.jpg I tried some of the weathering using a sponge brush, then touching up. Its very interesting. I think I may just end up painting it with a brush, or practice some more, because mine came out..not so well. :/ http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2324.jpg Also went down to my LGS today, to get some snow flocks and gloss varnish for my bases. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2320.jpg ...walked out with some Instant Mold, to replace all that polymorph [someone needs a cooling off period] that I bought... and I came home to find my scout bits came, so I can test it on these. :P http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2322.jpg Also found a ton of Malifaux, I may go back and grab a set or two of those..but its really expensive.. Shortsonfire79
Good luck with the mold stuff, I got some the other day and it works great for single part molds but two part molds are a NIGHTMARE! and I have clear its not that, just lining them up again. Anyway good luck and look everything so far... You're so right! Lining the piece up was such a chore! The extra GS that was squeezed out of the mold line really made it difficult! We'll see how it turns out (look below) though I'm pretty sure that it will be super off...oh well! Thanks for the insight. ;)  So like I mentioned above, I tried out the snow on an older piece. I used this technique that I found, and it turned out okay, but I had trouble controlling where it would end up (it kept rolling off my sculpting tool) so I think I'll try using tweezers first next time, then the sculpting too. Disregard where the snow was actually placed, as I was just testing to see how it sits on the gravel, and on painted marines. The snow does still flake off a bit (a problem I've always had with basing materials) so I'm going to hit it with my 'basing glue' tomorrow to see how that goes. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2325-1.jpg  I glazed the mud sections of the two test bases as well. I think they require a bit more browns though, they seem too grayish to me, thoughts? http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2326-1.jpg  And I also gave the instant mold a test run on the small pieces I mentioned. Needless to say, THIS STUFF IS A WINNER!! I don't have to use any sort of release agent at all, though I'll be putting some on my fingers next time, because the GS would stick to my finger, and come out of the mold with all the details! (fantastic!). So I'm also giving the fw piece a test run as well, since they're only shipped in groups of 6 chainsaws and 4 knives. I doubt it'll turn out, but hey, it was worth a shot! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2327.jpg Mods/admins if this is against policy, I (or you) can take it down, though this is personal use only and they're only small details not meant for mass production. :)  Thanks for lookin, and if anyone is capable of adding insight to the snow base and weathering techniques, I'd be very grateful. I've already combed the TONS of tutorials on here, with limited topics on the specificity of my requests. Thanks. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/175865-black-fists-space-marines/page/15/#findComment-2886320 Share on other sites
