Those are very good wolves, the grey is great, the chips in the armor is fantastic (I will steel those for my red scorpions) and the glow of the eyes is very well done but how do you keep all that hard work of drybrushing on your model, how does it not rub off when handling your models?

Haven't updated this thread for awhile but I've slowly been working on my Wolves.

My latest project is Thunderwolves. I bought Canis Wolfborn some time ago after seeing Dave Taylors fantastic conversions. Inspired by that I built this:

gallery_28439_3822_16874.jpg

The work needed to repose the model turned out to be much harder than I had anticipated and I made the neck a bit to long. I'm also not so fond of how the rider is placed so far back on the wolf but moving him forward would be way to much work.

But with the release of the plastic Bloodcrushers my work got a lot simpler. I'm planning to build three Thunderwolves at the moment and this is my first:

I'm not sure if I should add some fur to the back and hips to the wolf to give it more bulk, I would love to get some opinions on that.

When I build the next Thunderwolf I will extend the neck on the wolf a bit and raise the head to shoulder level, I think it looks wrong the way it is now. I will also make the shoulders thinner and rework the head a bit since it looks a bit to rat-like at the moment.

I have to say that I really like the Bloodcrusher models, I even feel a bit bad covering up all the mechanical details with fur, so I have left some showimg through the fur. Forgeworlds new Armour Marks are really great, I feel like redoing my whole army in mk IV armour :P.

@ sword brethren

Thanks! I also like the armour showing but I'm concerned that they will look scrawny.

@ Lord_Azoth

Thank you. I will add some pics of my process for converting the Crushers.

BLOODCRUSHER INTO THUNDERWOLF CONVERSION TUTORIAL

  • Start by removing all Chaos insignia, trim the shoulders and hoofs down. Cut off the neck at it's base and move it up a bit.
    gallery_28439_5356_93218.jpg
    ...
  • I've glued on some plasticard to cover the hole left by the repositioning of the neck.
    gallery_28439_5356_48640.jpg
    ...
  • Another piece of plasticard that will be the base for the harness is added.
    gallery_28439_5356_48515.jpg
    ...
  • Next I glue the head on. I position it a bit further up than intended to further elongate the neck. I've also trimmed the head down to make it more organic.
    gallery_28439_5356_39043.jpg
    ...
  • I continue building the harness and add some plasticard to help me building the ears and claws.
    gallery_28439_5356_1662.jpg
    ...
  • I use a paperclip as the basis for the tail.
    gallery_28439_5356_6419.jpg
    ...
  • The riders legs are cut up at the hips and knees and reassembled on the Thunderwolf.
    gallery_28439_5356_61769.jpg
    ...
  • Now it's time to add some fur.
    gallery_28439_5356_55375.jpg
    ...
  • More fur. The tail bulked out to make the sculpting later on easier.
    gallery_28439_5356_26874.jpg

  • Detailing the head. Added some eyelids and built a new nose.

ARMOUR PAINTING TUTORIAL

I've made one change compared to the written tutorial back on page one, I removed one step of drybrushing before the Badab Black wash and added it in later.

gallery_28439_4229_45128.jpg

1. Basecoat with Adeptus Battle Grey

2. Light drybrush of Fortress Grey

gallery_28439_4229_69971.jpg

3. Wash with Badab Black

4. Lightly drybrush Codex Grey, trying to keep in mind where you have your primary lightsource (top down for me)

gallery_28439_4229_9983.jpg

5. Drybrush Fortress Grey again, still trying to keep in mind of where you have your lightsource

6. Add another light layer of Fortress Grey.

gallery_28439_4229_68889.jpg

7. Next, I do a highlight with Fortress Grey, making sure it's about 1/1 paint/water to get a smooth highlight and painting the most prominent areas

gallery_28439_4229_9790.jpg

8. Diluting Vermin Brown heavily with water (I guess it would be something like 1/9 paint/water) I wash it into recessed and shaded areas

gallery_28439_4229_60772.jpg

9. I reinforce the Vermin Brown wash with Scorched Brown, diluted to the same level as the previous wash, trying to paint inside the previous wash to get a blended effect

gallery_28439_4229_56077.jpg

10. Then I give the whole model a wash of diluted Scorched brown

gallery_28439_4229_50406.jpg

11. Paint some small highlights with Fortress Grey to the most prominent areas

gallery_28439_4229_14356.jpg

12. Add scratches with Scorched Brown highlighted with Fortress Grey

Beautiful paint job!

Would love to see how you do the glowing eyes.

@ husi2100

Thanks. I've started painting the Lone Wolf so I think I'll have to save the pelt for the next one.

@ Lord_Azoth

I'm glad you find it helpful. Be sure to post your Thunderwolves, I would love to see what you do with them.

@ hmk17

The glowing eyes are done trying to emulate Cyrils technique.

@ Natanael

Thank you!

Hey man, these are absolutely awesome, I love the Thunderwolves and the grey you painted your Space Wolves with. I have always had a problem with the "grey" GW uses so this is just great to see. Also the eyes are wicked cool and I will most definitely try it out for my marines. Thank you for the inspiration! B)

After finding some inspiration around the internet I've decided to update my version of Logan Grimnar, which can be found in the first post of this thread.

I'm reusing the Forge World Space Wolf Terminator torso from an old model and have addd some hair. By adding a Belt of Russ I'm also able to give him some additional height.

gallery_28439_3822_12917.jpg

I've also started work on his Axe Morkai.

gallery_28439_3822_16395.jpg

Still a lot of work to do but I'm feeling quite positive about this :).

@GooseDaMoose

Thank you! I've never been a fan of the blue-grey either.

@Lord_Azoth

Tanks!

I'm using the wolf pelt from Wolf Guard Terminators box but I will resculpt the body of it so it fits better. It will also be layered with one pelt around his waist and one hanging down the back.

The Stormbolter is from a Dreadnought and looks a bit big, but it balances the size of the axe.

Allright, finally took some pics of all the models I'm currently working on. I've also decided to use them as regular Space wolves belonging to Ragnar Blackmanes Great Company instead of 13th Company.

On to the Pics!

Logan is coming along nicely, need to finish sculpting the fur on his cloak.

Some Grey Hunters.

gallery_28439_3822_7555.jpg

Lone Wolf.

gallery_28439_3822_121766.jpg

Lascannon Long Fangs. I've used the legs from the old metal Space Wolves Long Fangs and plastic heads and torsos. I got the idea from Megalodon.

gallery_28439_3822_63802.jpg

gallery_28439_3822_46048.jpg

Missile Launchers. For these I've used the regular old metal Space Marine Devastator legs and sculpted some fur pelts for them.

gallery_28439_3822_58804.jpg

Thunderwolf Cavalry with Wolf Claw and Storm Shield.

gallery_28439_3822_55170.jpg

I've started updating my old Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour. The old ones were mostly equipped with either Storm Bolter and Power Fist or Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield so I've started swapping their weapons for more interesting combos.

That's it for now. Got a lot of painting to do ;).

thats an awesome Logan... but

i hear him as a scrawny prince seconds before shouting "by the power of Grayskull"

the wolfguard are cool too but not personally sold on the wolfskull helmet; however, the charging thunderwolf guy is fantastic.
