Interested in a conversion challenge?

Recommended Posts

If I could suggest something, the Chaos Marines Squad has a banner pole for the sergeant with a scarred, cracked Space Marine helmet impaled as a trophy. It could be used to represent the cracked, borrowed armor of the Space Wolves 13th Company, a statue, a war weary Marine, an objective marker, a discarded helmet etc etc

I see the sense of a blister vs a boxed set for an outright purchase. You could run the comp with a theme and a part, i.e. Master Of the Forge using Chaplain Cassuis for example. This way the main part for the conversion is only £8 and the rest you have to bash from your bits box.. Plus we'd all get a cool combi-flamer to use somewhere in our armies. ;)

When are you announcing the details? I can't wait to get started!

On second thought, I also agree with using a metal mini. If you would use a certain plastic box/part, the entries would be too different and judging would be next to impossible.

I'm not sure if choosing a certain theme would work that well, though (like what WingsOfTheFalcon suggested). Just picking a certain mini will already be enough restriction I think...

Also, I would suggest using a mini where head/helmet and arms are not too hard to remove. These elements are most of the time the defining elements of Warhammer minis. I would also pick an older mini or one that doesn't have too much blingy-bling on it. I have wrestled with the Terminator Chaplain last week, thinking about conversions, but the mini is already so cluttered in (awesome) detail I still don't know what to do with it.

Just my thoughts. I'm looking forward to this a lot ^^

I suppose theming does narrow the range of creativity a bit. You would get a mad range of stuff if you leave the doors open! :)

I'm already thinking it's been a long time since I did a chaos conversion, been playing with loyalists for too long hehe...

A metal part, and no theme appeals to me more, plastic kits means we'll be left with a mass of models we may not actually require, and it only benefits people who already own this part, or play the parts army. I fancy the idea of converting something I'd at-least have the slight inclination to use.
metal parts, but mostly plastic would be best IMO, gives you a greater variety, and when you think we may not end up using the model; and most metal models are at least 8 pounds, the plastic commander provides greater value for money, as you then get a selection of bits to use as a model or as trophy on whatever models you do collect...

I like the idea of having a theme instead of a set part. It means people can kit bash instead of having to buy stuff. Would perhaps get more people in on it. Of course that leads to the problem of what the theme is... :P

Either way i think i'm gonna try my hand at this :)

um... wow. Okay, I wasn't expecting this kind of a turn out. The original idea as described to me was as follows:

The conversion was limited to requiring the use of a specific part. (The examples I was told about all happened to be metal parts, but there are 2 things to consider with this point I'll elaborate on below)

The Participants would have 30 days to plan their conversion, procure the needed materials and parts, complete the conversion and take pictures of it.

31 days after the challenge started the participants would supply the pictures of their conversion for judging.

That is what was explained to me.

Now, a couple points about the pieces that were used as an example to me. The individual who was describing this to me said "several years ago". Now I was figuring that would be like 5-8 years ago. 5-8 years ago the plastics from GW were only just crossing the line of entering the territory of what they have become. So metal models were generally preferred for high profile conversions due to the detail carried in the model. Second thing, GW was doing the old Bitz Ordering system then so you could order just the part you needed and not get all the extras.

Now, since this is showing a good deal of interest, I'm thinking I'm gonna have to bow out of the actual challenge so that I can judge. Also so I can have the time to make banners for the whinne... er, winners.

Now, as the for the Plastic/Metal question. With as much interest as this challenge seems to be getting I would like to keep this simple the first time out. I am going to require a metal bit for the required part. Outside of that piece you are welcome to use whatever you wish in the conversion. I think the metal bit will be less trouble because I can simply say "Cassius' body" or "Calgar's Torso" or "The new Terminator Liby's arm" and there's no confusion as to what part I'm referring to. Depending on how well this challenge goes, I may hold a series of them, say once every 2 months and as time goes on I'll pic different parts.

Now then, themes... It's an interesting idea. I can see how saying "Use this part to make a Space Marine Librarian" would help limit the contest a bit for the judges. Like the question about making the required part plastic, I think I will wait until after this first challenge is completed. I'm not opposed to the idea, I just think it will add more complications then is worth dealing with the first time out.

Okay, just make sure the said metal part is something in a blister rather than actually something like Calgar's Torso which is part of a larger boxed set and so expensive. Just something nice a simple in a blister.

okay the Calgar's torso was a bad example, but you get my point.

yeah, i just thought you worked for GW and were on commission or something...

lol

having said that i did buy the calgar set for the sword with chains on it ;)

I like this idea, but I was thinking maybe the challenge could be more concept-based? so that instead of making a blister-specific challenge, you could just use whatever in your bit box instead. might make it a cheaper challenge for us poor students ;)

but anyway, I like the idea, even though I won't get many chances to enter.

i second that!

not that i don't have the budjet, but i have 7 years of bit boxes (lituraly 2 boxes) i need to empty a bit

but either way, i'm in for the challenge

is that not the plan? i thought they would say "USING THIS, MAKE A COOL... GO!" and then it would be like scrapheap challenge, as long as you were using +specific bit A+ you could use whatever else you want....

Okay, apparently I need to spell a few things out to address the confusion that seems to be creeping up.

What is this Conversion Challenge:

This conversion Challenge will be a 30 Day challenge where in each participant will create a converted model. The final model may represent anything the participant wishes. At this time, there are only 2 limitations.

Limitation 1:

The final conversion must use the required part. I will go into more detail about the required part in a moment.

Limitation 2:

The conversion must be appropriate for this forum (Remember, we are on BolterandChainsword.com after all)

Those are the only limitations. If you want to build a gigantic Army A clashing with Army B diorama where the leaders of the two armies are conversions utilizing the required bit; Fantastic idea! More power to ya! I can't wait to see the finished product. If you want to create a loan model to represent you're newly inducted Chosen Space Marine; Outstanding idea! I want to see what you convert to pull off the idea.

When is this Challenge:

I will announce the start of the Challenge Saturday, the 15th of May at or around 10pm eastern time. The challenge will run for 30 days, until June 9th. By June 10th, 10am eastern time, ALL entries must be in. I (maverike_prime) will conduct the judging.

How do I submit my conversion:

Post pics of it. There are several free image hosting services available online including Photobucket and Flickr. You can upload your pictures to those services and then post links to them in a thread on this forum. If you encounter difficulty in getting the pictures uploaded, I encourage you to ask for help.

What do I need to submit?

Pictures. I'm not going to sit here and try to work out a systems of requirements for the pictures so I'll just ask that you submit however many pictures you think you need to show off your conversion. If when viewing your images I can not clearly see where you used the required piece, I will send you a message asking you to point it out for me.

Where do I send the pictures?

On this forum. When I announce the challenge Saturday night, I will open a new thread. Post all submissions in that thread. I will post a link to the submission thread here in this thread and utilize this thread to answer questions that may arise.

What were you saying about the required piece:

The required piece is the primary point of the challenge. Anyone can make a cool conversion with their own parts. But when you're limited to needing to use one specific part, it becomes much more of a challenge. In that spirit, this conversion challenge is limited by the fact that you will be required to make use of a specific part in your conversion. Please understand, that I am only requiring you to use the part. I make no requirement on how the part is used.

For example; Lets say the required part is this Space Marine Body. To have a qualified entry for the challenge that body MUST be used. You may want to use it as the central part of the conversion and convert a Space Marine Sergent directing his squad forward under fire. Perhaps you want to convert a scene where a Chaos daemon just ripped a gigantic gash down the length of the body so you take a dremal to the body carve out the gash and green stuff in the ravaged armor edges. The final conversion has a Blood Letter standing over the recently ravaged marine. That would be fine. Perhaps you want to swap out the head so you take your dremal and core out the head to put the half-cybernetic head in it's place and go on to convert an Iron Father who just wreaked a Tyranid warrior. That would be fine.

Will the required part be metal or plastic?

For this first challenge it will be metal.

What? Why? Metal is hard to work with

The main concern raised about this challenge as been cost for the required bit. Generally speaking, acquiring a part that is available via blister is cheaper then acquiring a part in a plastic box set. Using the above example, the cost to acquire the body would be $11.50 USD because that marine is available in a blister. Where has if you to build the same body out of plastic you need to acquire the Tactical Marine box set for $35.00 USD. From a planning stand point I am making these decisions on a worst case basis, and that is "If I had nothing, and I entered this challenge, that am I required to have?". Blisters are generally cheaper then box sets. Plus I never said you had to go out and buy the blister. Maybe you have a friend who has that piece laying around from an old conversion. Offer to trade for it.

Any other questions?

Just one, do you want the pictures of the conversion to be completed as in painted, or are you happy to judge on the calibre of the build? :)

hehe I ain't running no Golden Daemon competition. If you want to submit a painted model, I won't say no. But be prepared to show me the required piece.

so prove the required piece is in there? so a photo pre painted and then one after

Good idea, just be aware you won't be getting extra points for paint jobs. This is a conversion challenge.

thats okay i can't paint for :cuss

but, having said that, i do tend to greenstuff OVER torso's and what-not, so it may be difficult to prove it...

hmmmm, thinking now, can't wait for saturday now. YAY

i do tend to greenstuff OVER torso's and what-not, so it may be difficult to prove it...

Which would defeat the object i guess. I could start with a metal space marine model, plaster it in a pound of clay and sculpt a greater deamon around it. "yes sir, the model is in there somewhere" :cuss I think conversions should be used to show off the model in new and exciting lights. Re-pose, re-arm, re-head, add a jump pack or not, <snip>, muzzle efect, big guns, icons etc.

Al

oh, the <snip> was because i had an great idea, wrote it down and decided to keep it to myself for a possible conversion:D
