DXF's WIP Thread - More Iron Hands

Recommended Posts

Backpacks are done and attached! They threw me for a loop when I was mounting them since they ride so much higher above the shoulders than a Mk.VII backpack. The arms are all primed and waiting for paint (tomorrow's project). Then the pauldrons, then the guns! It's expensive points-wise (and money-wise, since I bit the bolt and ordered them all from The War Store), but these guys are carrying a total of two combi-flamers, four combi-plasmas, and four combi-meltas. I think I'm going to have to trim the melta "bottles" off though for the guys to holl the damn things across the torsos. We'll see. Here's the latest:

Here's a question: should the Sergeant get a back-banner? I usually don't put them on my squad leaders, but these guys are the elite of the clan.

Personally i dont like backbanners. If you think like a story(being a writer) how does someone fight with one of those hanging on top of him?! His manouverability would be nil and it would provide a drag even a marine would feel when running or hit by a blast.

As the previous person mentioned, a servo arm, servo skull. Depends how you mark out your guys at the moment. Do you use a lot of parchment? If not then maybe just adding a few of those to a model would show it to be the sarge.

Well, I finally got some of them further along. In point of fact, half the squad is now basically done; all that remains is some sealant to keep the transfer down and finish the sides of the bases. Maybe some extra Chainmail highlights since the first layer didn't come out quite bright enough methinks. So here's Veteran Sergant Mazrim Kross and half of his squad.

A couple of group shots:

Showing off the Forge World Iron Hands transfers. The ones I pulled off the sheet were just a touch too big for the shoulderpads. . . .

Whaddya think so far?

So, finally got some work done on the other combat squad. Combimeltas are all done; its just a pity that when they sculpted them, they put the melta bottle and skull icon on the wrong side of the gun. Some extra highlighting, fix the bases, add some transfers, and they'll soon by done!

Next up: Venerable Dreadnought with plasma cannon and DCCW. Sadly, I apparently ordered the rock drill instead of the power claw, but such is life -- its something new and different, at least.

DXF,

Good job with the sternguard! The combiweapons look great. I'm glad that you have the capability to work on your hobby in such an austere environment; it must feel very therapeutic.

On another note, what are your thoughts on some of the more "typical" marine accessories on Iron Hands models. For example, do you think tabards (i.e. metal veterans) or some of the "romanesque" bits fit in with them? What about helmet crests? I am undecided; I don't think they quite fit in, but I have some really cool minis that I'd like to use.

Thanks, and it is. Keeps me sane, though of course I get some crap from the other guys about my nerdiness.

As for the tabards and crests and such, I'm not a big fan. I always figured that the Hands would be fairly austere, disregarding such trappings, and keeping things as simple as possible. I even try not to go overboard with purity seals as a result. All of my models that do have the extra parchments and helmet crests and whathaveyous I'm going to use when I finally settle my DIY for good.

I bit the bullet and ordered a powerclaw for the above-mentioned dreadnought, as well as a base and Badad War Vol. I, so I'm going to set him aside and instead knock out some heavy weapons. I've got two lascannons, two heavy bolters, and four plasma cannons that are all waiting to be mounted on my Space Marines.

Speaking of which, anyone have any really good load-outs for Devastator Sergeants? Combi-weapons? Stormbolters? Should I even bother with a special close combat weapon?

I know that I've changed my mind now more times than a spastic 17-year-old girl trying to pick out a prom dress, but I was suddenly overcome with the need to kit-bash a Librarian. I carved the psychic hood out of a shoulderpad as is an accepted method of making one (according to the Internet at least), but I deliberately chose a bolt pistol and straight power armor for him so that I could field him A.) cheaply and/or B.) as a counts as Tigurius should the need arise.

A trouble that I encountered early (as in, right off) in this project was how to Iron Hands-ify him. I decided to use the augmetic pewter chest-piece from the IH Squad box for two reasons, namely that the cabling on the front could double for the near-ubiquitous power feeds that run to psychic hoods, and that it, like the Mk.VIII chest pieces from the Tactical Squad boxes, is difficult to get a helmeted head decently placed within it and so would force me to use a non-helmeted head which, I'm sure we're all aware, seems to be the method that Space Marines use to determine who's actually in charge. The other idea I came up with was to attach multiple servo-skulls to him, which could act as familiars from a fluff stand-point. I was having a hard time figuring out just where to attach two different servo-skulls and didn't necessarily want to place them both on his backpack -- the easiest mounting point -- especially since they'd both be looking straight ahead when he's posed in the act of swinging his force sword (courtesy of the Company Champion). This dilemma solved itself when I discovered that I still have some loose bits from the other two Iron Father models (see page 1) that I haven't put together & painted yet, and so attached this pauldron -- with its now-looking-forward servo-skull -- to somewhat correct the problem. Now it was bionicified, but it was still short Librarian-stuff. So I added a few small bits, namely a few extra purity seals, the small skull-on-a-cross icon swinging from his belt (soon to be painted as an Icon Mechanicus), and the twinned tubular bit from Tactical Squad sprues that I can only guess at being censers. I'll also be adding a spare parchment bit draped from the studded pauldron, and the head I've chosen is the one from the Devastator box that has the USMC-style buzz cut (known to us Army folks as a "high and tight"). I am going to work on the Devastators I promised, too; the Sergeant's built and I've decided to lower that project work-load by doing two plasma cannons and two heavy bolters (lascannon barrels may become important in another soon-to-be-announced project, and they're so hideously expensive on Devastators anyway).

In any case. Here's the Libby, Master Epistolary Silas Adelphian, in his rawest form:

I already used the half-cybernetic face on several sergeants and two HQs -- including my count-as Pedro, pictured earlier in this thread -- so I want to stay away from using it again. As for the Librarians-wear-blue commentary. . . well, the Iron Hands are not Codex-compliant. They don't use the Chapter structure, color codings, ranks. . . any of it, really, so why would they do the blue-for-Libbies bit?

DXF,

Here is a scanned image from the Index Astartes: Librarians that features an Iron Hands Librarian. I'm not sure if I like the all blue armor, but its a good starting point. If you like the high and tight look, how about the Deathwatch head with the bionic eye? I like your pose and psychic hood, but I think that the head should have a more bionicy feel to it. The torso you chose works great and your reasoning to use it fits. I especially like the idea of servo-skulls as familiars.

Regarding the nerdery and the guys, I feel your pain. My buddy was the FSO and had NIPR in his office. He shared the office with one dude who spent a lot of time away so it worked out for us to look up nerdery on the net. When we talked about Warhammer, it was practically in code as if it were some shady back alley deal or something. "Yo, you got the stuff? "Yeah, I got the stuff." " Is it green or brown? " "It's the green stuff of course! Whodya think you're dealing with?" etc., etc....

Hmmm. Well, my only response to that is that I don't want to paint him blue. I've always felt that altering a model's scheme away from the uniformity of the army itself made no sense -- my techmarines have red on them, but they're not red themselves. Why should my libbies be any different?

It'd be nice to have, sure, but I don't have one at hand and between Badab War, Deathwatch Collector's Edition, and my Mk.III suits, I've basically filled up my gaming money quota for the rest of the year (still going to bug the parents for a Revenant Titan for Christmas, though!).
