DXF's WIP Thread - More Iron Hands

Recommended Posts

And here we have some photos of the finished product. It's not as impressive as some other folks' around here, I know, but I do like it this for sure compared to the stock version.

I really like this. The stock Assault Cannons were just too large and I think you've fixed that. I've got two coming is the mail shortly and I'm probably going to do something very similar. My only issue with this model (stock or otherwise) is how does it land? All the weight on the turret and tail fin sounds stupid and I'm guessing since you've removed that, there is no landing gear now. Not really an issue for gaming, but something that was bothering me. Still a great simple connversion for cleaning up the look of this kit, but I haven't seen too many people comment on a solution for this.

I haven't seen too many people comment on a solution for this.

When the parts arrive in the post I'm also going to go this route with the assault cannon and try using a Storraven's landing skid as well on the front - at least it's pretty wide and looks like it could take the bulk of the weight on the front - not quite sure what to do with the tail end, but the kit landing skids, as skinny as they are, if they're seperate then one might go either side.

Still look pretty unstable, but better than nowt.

Well, there's a little eagle-stamped plate that comes in the kit that goes on the bottom of the assault cannon assembly. It's not intended as a landing skid -- there are two actual skids for that -- but that's what I think of it as, since I didn't use the actual skids. And if you think about it, the tail-fin assembly "skid" is just there to maintain balance when landed; it's not a true load-bearing structure since the chassis itself is so demonstrably front-heavy. I'd prefer it have true real landing gear of some kind, but that's life.

I didn't think the normal assault cannons were too bad once I first saw them in the flesh (or plastic), but now I might have changed my mind. Good job.

Hey, look! An update!

Basically, I'm been painting some Alpha Legion guys ever since we started getting reliable rumors coming down the pipe before someone hit me over the head and got me back on track. I'm planning on taking these guys to the FoB Open, after all... So, here's a mostly painted Storm Talon! Still have to do the turbines, antennae, and some other minor detail work, but it's getting there!

Yes, I even did the pilot and cockpit. GW gives you easy-to-paint crew and cockpits, so people who just paint over the canopies to hide their laziness in not painting the interior drive me up the wall...

I am loving that Storm Talon Brother  Where do you plan on putting the chapter symbols?

By the way, didn't you mention somewhere that you are working on some Honor Guard? Would love to see what you came up with

So....I reorganized my Photobucket account, seperating this giant jumble of pictures into subject matter albums, only realizing after the fact that my entire WIP thread and every pic I've ever posted here is going to go blank.  I won't replace every picture, but I am going to start a gallery thread in the Hall of Honor for all my finished products, as well as restart chronicling my painting in this thread.

So, for those who are fans, keep a close eye.  Storm Talon #2 is, indeed, a WIP, and will be pictured here soon!

Since I'm feeling motivated, here's a look at my finished Storm Talon, the Aquila Aurea, and a side-by-side with the WIP one, the Ferrus Pugnum.

Looking good DEF! ^_^  Are you going to paint the canopy?  I tried to paint the frame, but in the end, I simply sprayed the whole thing black.   I have plans for the pilot torso   Might have to paint some accents similar to yours (the white looks very effective ^_^ ), as it would look a little plain and unfinished looking otherwise.

I see that you've gone for the Las cannon load out.  Are you thinking of having it being able to change weapons, or are they fixed in permanently?  (I've gone for the Typhoon option, as my Land Speeder has that option too ^_^ ), but they aren't fixed in yet.

I'm not planning on painting the canopy at all, no. I'm terrified of screwing up the transparency of it after I actually spent the time and effort to paint the pilot and cockpit (I don't paint any part of the canopy on my Eldar grav tanks either, since the pilots and cockpits are painted). As for the lascannons, no, they're glued in permanently. I field these babies as dedicated anti-aircraft, and lascannons give the best chance for a single-shot shoot-down of an enemy flyer. In fact, the pair of them bagged three Heldrakes and a Night Scythe across two games at a recent tourney, all but one of them thanks to the lascannons (the other one was thanks to the Assault Cannon rolling three Rends!).

Looks good can't wait to see other images .seen your Fire Angels.thumbsup.gif

Thanks!

More work done on the Talon!  I finished up some the white banding and layered on some metallics.  I've started the two-stage hightlighting, too; you can see it on here and it looks fairly low-key, which is what I was going for -- just enough gray to provide definition to the black.  Let me know what you think!

So, with ETL II rolling up in a couple of days, I'm going to do so quick prepatory work on a couple of units that I intend to pledge for the competition.  First up, a new Tactical Squad. . . come here, sprues!  I need you!

As promised, progress report!  The pictures don't show a lot of detail and the light is kind of crappy.  First shot is the Tactical Squad at about 95% -- the plasma cannon and a couple of little details are all that's left to finish -- and the second is the Rhino, with the gray basecoats for the Chapter iconography, Tactical arrow insignia, and stormbolter completed.  The plan for that is for the gray areas to be white, the cog-wheel to be red, and the gauntlet insignia to be (of course) silver.

Looking good DEF happy.png

Are the symbols Brass etch or decals? The one on the Rhino definitely looks more three dimensional.

Progress on the Rhino!  I wanted to break up the silver and white on the Chapter icons, so I went for a red cog wheel.  It seriously stands out though, and I'm thinking that maybe it's a little too flashy. . . You decide!
