The Tyrant Rises - Update 5/18/15 - Tac Marines Done

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I am going to keep expanding the army. I am currently painting another model and will hopefully finish him today. I also have some other "related" stuff finished as well as several models assembled and waiting.

As for the scratches, it is just black painted on in random patches then highlighted with silver. For the minotaurs I might use a scorched brown/black mix just since they have a warmer tone to them.

I have been getting requests by several people for recipes for my Astral Claws. I know the different recipes are scattered around the thread so I thought I would group them all together.

My Astral Claw paint guide:

Silver:

Basecoat with a chaos black/boltgun metal base. I have this pre-mixed in a pot. You basically just want something slightly darker then boltgun.

Line it with P3 Armor Wash. This stuff is great for metals.

Line Highlight with Mithril Silver.

Tidy up with basecoat.

The scratches are just chaos black highlighted with mithril.

Gold:

Basecoat with a shining gold/scorched brown base.

Layer on Shining Gold leaving the basecoat in the crevices.

Now the next few steps I vary, in fact going back through this thread i rediscovered a step I have left out recently, so experiment.

Wash with Devlan Mud.

Highlight with shining gold/mithril silver mix.

Wash with Gryphion Sepia (the step I forgot)

Re-highlight where needed as well as a final highlight of mithril if you think it needs it.

Scratches done in scorched brown and highlighted with the gold/mithril mix

Blue:

Basecoat Regal Blue.

Layer on with a 50/50 Regal/Enchanted Blue mix. Again I have this pre mixed in a pot.

Line with P3 Armor Wash

On larger areas like shoulder pads I do zenithel highlighting using enchanted blue. I water it down a ton and build up layers so it blends together.

Line Highlight with a enchanted/kommando khaki mix.

Final highlight of Kommando khaki if it needs it. (That color is kind of transparent so the blue should still show through a bit)

Scratches done in Regal/black mix, highlighted with Khaki.

Lenses:

Base chaos black.

Highlight lower right corner of lenses and the forward parts of the eye lenses with dark angels green. About half the lense should still be black.

Add in more and more Golden yellow making progressively smaller highlights.

Final highlight pure Golden Yellow.

Dot opposite corner with skull white.

Skin:

Basecoat with Tallarn Flesh.

Wash with Ogryn Flesh.

Second wash of scorched brown near the facial features, mostly just eyes, nose and mouth.

Layer with Tallarn/Dwarf flesh mix.

Mix in bleached bone for highlights. Do several different steps increasing the amount of bleached bone each step.

Final highlight of pure bleached bone on most prominent features.

Lightly wash lower lip with Baal Red as well as any implant in their head as the skin would be raw.

Lightly wash eyes with Leviathan Purple.

Re-highlight eyes and lip a bit as needed with bleached bone.

Bases:

Base Calthan Brown.

Drybrush with Calthan/bleached bone mix.

Wash with Devlan mud if it gets too bright.

Add snow, add grass clumps.

Rim with scorched.

Hope that helps.

Hope that helps.

Hey, Alex here, thanks for this compilation of awsome, realy gonna help me paint my claws! Know where I can get my hands on the P3 armour wash? (live in UK) do specific hobby stores stock it or do I have to order it online? Thanks again for this tutorial!

Funny that you should post the whole thing as I spent considerable time yesterday collecting all the info I could find in this thread and then I discover that you've posted it all together ;)

Ah well, cheers for that!

Ludovic

So as promised here is the next installment in my Astral Claw army, no more coasting by on squad Numas for me.

Marduk is a veteran of numerous campaigns, more than half of them as a member of the 1st company. He quickly proved his worth after being inducted into the ranks of the chapter from Badab Primaris itself. He quickly rose through the ranks and particularly excelled as an assault marine. He is level headed yet brutal at the same time. Their were numerous accounts of him seeking out glory by slaying enemy champions but he would never do this at the expense of the rest of his brothers. If the mission required him to hold an objective devoid of worthy opponents he would do so without a single complaint. He has been known to risk his own life to save his battle-brothers and thinks of the whole picture instead of just his own glory.

He was quickly promoted to the ranks of the 1st where he was awarded a suit of Terminator armor and placed within an assault squad. After experimenting with lightning claws, Marduk discovered he had an affinity with the Thunder Hammer, a weapon as brutal and blunt as he. When Huron began to reorganize the chapter Marduk thought nothing of it, he is a solider, a weapon to be wielded against the enemy, who ever they may be. He knew of Numas when they both served in the 1st but thought little of him, he was simply another Battle-Brother, someone he would sacrifice his life for and expect the same in return.

As the Badab War broke out Marduk found great joy in testing his skills against fellow astartes in true combat. His kill ratio was exceedingly high and he particularly liked to battle the marines of the Minotaurs and Carcharodons, warriors he thought were worthy of his skill. The mortal allies of the Legion were considered expandable by him, just as they were to most of the chapter. If his superiors told him to use the Legion as cover and a meat grinder that is what he did. During the final battle at the Palace of Thorns he was embroiled with the enemy near the gates and hallways of the palace proper and only heard of the fall of Huron through the distorted and confusing comm feeds. As the order to fall back was given he made it to safety with little trouble as many of the remaining brothers of the 1st did.

Post-Badab War: As far as Imperial investigators are able to determine Marduk still serves within the Red Corsairs as a member of the Terminator cadre. He has proven himself just as brutal, twisted and malicious as his fellow traitors, a personality change no doubt brought on by the warping influence of Chaos and the Maelstrom.

I need your guy's opinion. For the Guard Commander for my Legion forces, should I paint him with the same spray paint white effect as my test model a few pages back? Or should he have gleaming silver armor with gold accents like the marines he is trying to imitate?

I like both ideas, I feel like he would be arrogant enough to wear polished silver armor, but I'm worried it will make him not cohesive with the rest of the guard. Then if i go the silver route there is the question of his command squad's armor...

I would keep him in the colors of the guard not the legion. I would imagine that the guardsmen would probably be so expendable that the commander could have been promoted when the last commander was fed into the meat grinder before the legion. I certainly wouldn't think the commander would be so bold or presumptuous to imitate marines that he probably fears more than respects.

Excellent work so far by the way. I really like the look of the terminator and his shield. The snow on the bases fascinates me as well.

I don't know, in general I think of Guard commanders as being quite pompous especially the higher up you go. And I think an arrogant power hungry commander would probably have done better within the ranks than anyone else, especially as Huron went more and more nuts. I think that someone arrogant wouldve been more likely to be promoted after his predecessors death, he might have even had a hand in it ;)
Personally I'd go for the latter idea, to mark him out as a commander but I think you'd have to incorperate elements of the guardsman into it otherwise he'll look out of place. Maybe shiny, silvery shoulder guards and helmet while the torso is white? Just a thought.
First of all, simply brilliant. Hope to see more Astral Claws and I would love to see some Post-War Red Corsairs. Second, I could see an arrogant Guard commander trying to incorporate the elements of the Astral Claws into his uniform. It would make him a sort of brown-noser but that's expected in the Guard who become Traitors. Or at least to me it's expected.
