Gibil started his career within the Astral Claws as many did. He was a loyal and dedicated Space Marine, willing to give his life for the Emperor and the Imperium. When Huron became Chapter Master, Gibil had only just been promoted to full Battle-Brother from the ranks of the scouts. Displaying remarkable aptitude he was quickly promoted to the third company. He served with distinction, helping Huron in his quest to cleanse the Maelstrom. When an Astral Claw strike force was ambushed by the vile Eldar Gibil's squad was cut off and faced with almost certain defeat. Once the squad's flamer bearer was brought low Gibil retrieved the weapon and proceeded to immolate the remaining xenos, saving the lives of his surviving squad mates. This action saw him promoted to the ranks of the first company and the Sternguard.  Once Huron declared war against the Imperium he was reassigned to the ranks of the Retaliators. At first he was wary about the changes he saw occurring within his Chapter. He didn't understand some of the darker urges taking over his Brothers or their complete disdain for mortals. He was deeply conflicted. These were his Brothers whom he would gladly die for, but he could not abide by their choices. On several occasions he came close to trading blows with his fellow marines. After the Astral Claws began losing ground and started pulling back towards Badab, Gibil was finally given his chance at redemption.

Not wanting to follow his Brothers into damnation but unable to turn against them he sold his life during a particularly brutal boarding action. A Red Scorpions fleet had them caught completely off guard as they prepared to make the jump to the warp near the outermost edge of Badab controlled space. While the majority of the Astral Claw fleet was able to withdraw safely, the strike cruiser carrying Gibil's squad was hit with boarding torpedoes as they fled. As the loyalist marines tore their way to the bridge, Gibil stood defiant, blocking their path in the final hallway. Arming himself with his Heavy Flamer and a reserve bolter and combat knife, he stood on his own to allow his squad time to circumvent the attackers. By the time Buvalu and the others made it through the ships twisting corridors to attack the Red Scorpion's rear only a few still stood. The rest littered the floor as burnt and charred corpses. Unfortunately it was to late to save Gibil, who laid unmoving, slumped against the far wall, his promethium tanks empty and his body riddled with bolt holes. Thus was his tortured conscience laid to rest, serving his Chapter to the last and ending his betrayal of the Imperium.

Post-Badab War:

While initial reports stated that Gibil died defending against a boarding action in the closing phases of the war, Inquistorial reports compiled from first hand accounts and numerous interrogations point to a much darker fate. According to several chapter serfs captured after the fall of Badab, Gibil did not actually perish. When he was found slumped against the wall, the faintest trace of life still lingered within him. Although he would remain out of action for the remainder of the war, it appears he was kept alive within the Chapter's Apothecarium in a comatose state. As fate would have it the strike cruiser he was aboard was used by the traitors to flee the Imperium's wrath. Further accounts tell of how any attempts to awake him by traditional methods once within the safety of the Maelstrom were met with failure. Not wanting to waste a valuable Astartes with so few numbers remaining, Huron authorized a dark ritual to revive Gibil. While none of this can be verified as completely true, battlefield reports indicate a horribly possessed and warped Red Corsair matching Gibil's description. This marine seems to throw himself headfirst into the enemy lines, spouting green warp flame from his twisted form. He seems intent on seeking his death and is only restrained by his Brothers bodily hauling him back with chains and sorcery. Whether this is in fact Gibil, or if any of his souls remains may never be discovered.

Started on two of my Tactical Marines. I really want to have my whole army painted for the Badab War event at Adepticon next year, so I figured I best get started. All I really need to paint to have enough points are 5 more Tac marines, my last sternguard, my 4 remaining terminators, 2 bikes and an attack bike, Corein Sumatris, a Predator and a Land Raider. Though I may switch out some stuff.

Not much to show, but it's more proof of life. This thread is not dead! Hopefully I will have this pair done within a week, then I'll probably switch back to Fantasy for a bit before coming back to my Claws again.

Pict Capture of an Imperial Civic Building's wall during the latter phases of the Badab War.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/tyrant_zpsfyiaywyz.jpg

This message was found defacing several Imperial monuments and symbols of power on the world of Caustas VII after the secessionist forces were forced to abandon their hold on the planet in their retreat back to Badab. At the time who this "Tyrant" was was unknown, however in hindsight it is clear that Huron's forces had started to become unhinged even at this stage in the war. Whether it was scrawled in the blood of their victims or some unfortunate member of the Tyrant's Legion's own is still unknown. This record will be purged from Imperial records following your review...

Nice!!!  Welcome back!

Your work has always been great to sift thru, just caught my attention again.  Unfortunately with it doing that it has me considering a new project...  Of course after completing most/all of my coming Black Consuls, it has me looking at a Chapter that participated in the Badab War.  Was thinking Executioners, mostly for the ease of paintjob(compared to many) and their near crazed loyalty to the Emperor.

Great job, and again welcome back!  Beautiful stuff!

To quote Christopher Titus, "I have no words for this one."

Just amazing. Makes me want to finish up my errant Minotaurs and Crimson Fists so I can sell them to fund an Astral Claws army.

Thanks guys! I try and paint a little on them each night, but I probably won't post the pics here until they are done. If you want to follow more frequent updates on them though check out my twitter feed @mengelminis or my Facebook, Mengel Miniatures. I put up all my progress there, so that usually means pictures daily.

I just don't want to bore everyone on here with "Now the highlighting is done!" updates.

Battle-Brother Izdubar

Izdubar was recruited from Badab Primaris during the beginning of the war and through Huron's methods, had his ascent to a full fledged Space Marine accelerated. As the Tyrant's forces began to feel the toll of attrition many member of the Scout company were promoted to regular Battle Companies ahead of schedule to replenish the ranks. Izdubar was one of those Marines, assigned to Squad Illinos. Unlike Squad Numas, which mostly consisted of seasoned veterans, Squad Illinos had been reduced to just a handful of seasoned Marines during the outbreak of the war. This was a common occurrence with how brutal the fighting was. Instead of lamenting the loss of heroic Space Marines however, Huron saw it as an excellent opportunity to pair up the new recruits with Veterans. He hoped this would help the recruits gain experience faster under the tutelage of the existing squad members, as well as balance out the overall skill level of the squads.

Izdubar was a very dependable Marine, although not particularly exceptional in any way. He passed all of his tests and could be relied upon to preform any duty assigned to him without question and to the best of his ability. This made him the perfect line Marine for the Astral Claws, devoted, unquestioning, and capable. Having been raised through the ranks after the Astral Claws had already begun their slide into heresy, he saw nothing wrong with their casual disregard for human life, and the pension for cruelty. This, however, did not mean that he himself enjoyed such things, and would often try his best to avoid inflicting unnecessary casualties amongst the Tyrant's Legion. However, if it was his life, or one of his Brother's lives weighed against even 100 mortal lives, the choice was clear. Through all the many battles, Izdubar survived until the end, fighting in defense of the Palace of Thorns. With the loss of their Captain, Corien Sumatris, aboard the orbital defense platforms, Squad Illinos was under the purview of the many ground commanders abroad on Badab, with Huron at the head. Izdubar fought for the Tyrant until his last, falling to a Star Phantoms bolter amongst the burned out ruins of the Palace as his squad desperately sought to pull back to the inner defenses.

Battle-Brother Ammenon

Like his Battle-Brother, Izdubar, Ammenon was accelerated through the ranks of the Scout company to help alleviate the mounting casualties from the war. Unlike Izdubar, he excelled at most things he was tasked with and developed a penchant for boarding actions. He also began to take a sick joy in testing his skills against the loyalist Marines. This was not out of place within the ranks of the Astral Claws, and was actually encouraged, especially later in the war. Due to his natural skill when it came to close quarters fire fights he was gifted with the experimental Badab-Pattern Combat Shields. These light weight and small shields were typically attached to the wearer's left arm. Besides adding an extra layer of armor it also contained a small refractor field generator. More often then not it wouldn't deflect incoming fire, but the extra layer of protection it added to the Marine was sometimes the variable between life or death. This Combat Shield was developed illegally by Armenneus Valthex, the Astral Claws errant Techmarine. The technology was condemned by the Adeptus Mechanicus and lost after the Chapter fled into the Maelstrom.

Ammenon quickly became one of Squad Illinos' chief assets and racked up an impressive kill tally. During the defense of Badab itself his skills were essential in allowing the surviving members of the Squad to make it to the safety of one of the escaping vessels. He often acted as a scout, stalking through the ruins of the palace and ambushing the loyalists as they approached his squad mates. Caught between the fire of Ammenon and the rest of the squad, they were either cut down or forced to retreat and regroup. He was last seen boarding an escaping Thunderhawk with other surviving members of the Astral Claws.

Post-Badab War:

Ammenon made it into the safety of the Maelstrom after the chaos of the Badab War. There he flourished as a piratical Red Corsair for many decades, making the best use of his aptitude for boarding actions. Ever the pragmatist, he was last reported to have switched allegiances during the Pandorax incident and now fights under the colors of the Black Legion. It is assumed he now serves the Arch-Traitor and is part of the force massing within the Eye of Terror.

Well, i picked up a Blood Angels Sanguinary Priest to convert into a Corpse Taker Unit and found enough bits to build a Retaliator Unit. These are going to be my test units for my Astral Claws project. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions for the Servitors for the Corpse Taker?
