Chaos Space Wolves - Skyrar's Dark Wolves

I got some work done yesterday. I worked on the bases of my painted minis. As soon as they are finished, I'll post some new pics.

I also found some time to start assembling the next batch of marines.

Two grey hunters with bolters. The first one is on cork because I will place him on top of a piece of rock.

A grey hunter with pistol and chainaxe. I'm going to differentiate my squads of grey hunters with their weapons: one squad with bolters, one squad with pistol and chainsword and one squad with pistol and chainaxe.

The second wolf guard with combi-melta and powerfist. This guy also goes on top of a piece of rock.

Another long fang with missile launcher. I really had to butcher his backpack :(

Why didn't they take chaos backpacks into account when they made these things :)

I didn't glue on the head as it would be near impossible to paint it afterwards. So I'll have to paint it separately.

More to come ...

Here are the "finished" pics of my first batch ...

I got some more work done tonight. Here are the next three marines I assembled.

  • 2 weeks later...

Small update. I have finished the partial assembly of the first drop pod.

I also did some magnetising so I can swap between the stormbolter and the missile launcher.

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/8307/dsc07125c.jpg

I also added magnets to the inside of the bottom piece. If I ever want to make a display board, I can use some magnets or metal to keep the drop pod from falling off.

I'm thinking of still adding some chaos bits to the doors.

I finished assembling another two marines.

And a WIP pic of the five marines I'm painting for the moment ...

Nice work here mate..

..indeed..I'd use the wulfen heads on those dudes with meele..

I can't see a rabid werewolf aiming and shooting around..can you? ;)

It was a difficult decision but by the rules, they can still use their ranged weapons while they loose the benefits of their melee weapons.

I don't know what happend to me tonight, but I actually found some time to paint and it went so good, I pushed through and finished these five models.

I think your painting skills are rocking, so I'm a bit thrown by the eye pupils. They're very "pin-prick".

I'm not confident enough to do it with a paintbrush. When I do the dot of white, I already mess up the flesh color and have to correct that. Let alone do a smaller dot of black within the white. Or two small dots of white left and right of a black dot. Maybe I should get a finer brush just for eyes. For the moment I do the eyes with a micro pen. I do believe this batch is already better than the previous ones. Althought I took the pictures from angels you can't really see it :)

I use a micro pen too (0.005 to be exact) and I think it works pretty well. It looks like you're making a stroke on the eyeball, causing a cat's eye sort of line to form, rather than just stabbing the eyeball, which would make more of a dot. The right eye (his right) on the 2nd to last image looks like it's a pretty good size.

But I agree.. using a brush used to drive me nuts. My hands have a tendency to shake more and more these days. Trick I've found is to cramp up your hand into a fist as though you were knocking on a door, then use that grip with a pen. Feels like there's more minute muscle control.

I don't feel that unsteady hands are a problem, more that I cannot get a fine point to my brush to deliver just the right amount of paint. It's always either to much paint, not enough paint or an uneven dot ...

I did try this batch with a stroke as I thought that would be easier to do than a dot in the centre. I'll try some more dots next time :)

I started on my terminators today and finished the first one: the wolf guard in terminator armour with chainfist, storm bolter and cyclone missile launcher. I haven't glued his head on as it will be simpler to paint it seperately. I like the irony of using the one-eyed head for the terminator with the most shooting power :D

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/9154/dsc07205z.jpg

The missile launcher is magnetized so I can play with or without. In case I play without, I have magnetized another bit to hide the magnet on his armour.

I also got the seeker of the slain done. This one didn't need assembly. I haven't glued him to the base yet, so I can paint the figure and the base seperately.

A small update ... I assembled the fourth terminator today, the wolf guard with combi-plasma and power weapon ...

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1360/dsc07444k.jpg

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/5286/dsc07453l.jpg

http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/6617/dsc07447g.jpg

It was my first combi-plasma conversion and I cut a bit too much off the bolter. I covered my mistakes up with a wolf skull. I think the final result is still ok.

Normally I'd agree, but the blue color won't have much contrast to the armor's trim.

So for color I'd say: Blood Angels or Imperial fists.

Another thought crossed my mind, make it a white Veteran Smurf helmet.

I like it that you keep it simple: painting red, yellow or white. It's not like those are easy colors to paint

But those three colors are already in my scheme. So maybe something that is completely different like dark angels green ? It would fit with the space wolf vs dark angel grudge thing ...

Final terminator is assembled: the wolf guard with combi-plasma and wolf claw.
