Aw I was hoping your DP was as heavily converted as everything else! My own Night Lords have been shelved for a bit, been working on some renegade guard as their "auxillaries". I'll resume my Night Lords after I've finished probably 1-2k of renegades.

Tanith Ghost

Obviously, I have plans for all of my non-converted miniatures: Daemon Prince, Raptors, Lord. These are very interesting for me without any conversions, like collector miniatures.

But I will realize my plans after I finish this battle force.

Look over there! It's The Nostalgia!

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/6825/img0292800x600.jpg

Well, as you can understand, this is nostalgia-update. I think, it's already the time, when I can recognize my past csm-army and think about today. But lets talk in order...

Today I've finished last veteran for my vet-squad. He (his model, actually) has back-story, and I want tell it really.

3 or 4 years ago I've started to collect my first csm-army. There wasn't that much conversions and cool stuff indeed, only clean ranks of unmodified power armor. I'd really wanted to post here my first attempts in painting, but a can't find any of my old shiny marines. So the oldest pieces of my collection are just on the photo above. Returning to those times - thereat I painted miniatures by one, don't converted or even added some spare bits from the box to them. Pretty simple and medium-looking - a usual army of a beginner. And then I've assembled this guy:

http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/852/img0275640x480.jpg

He's not that badass indeed, both in term of painting and model. But thereat I was fascinated with that bulging right shoulder pad, his pose. He looked special among the others. Maybe this was my first miniature that I enjoyed myself.

It took a while, my collection increased. Remembering the oldi, I've decided to revive him and build the second incarnation for the chosen squad:

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/3539/img0278640x480.jpg

I can't remember, why the choice of bits and equipment was different. But this version I like even more than the first. Here is some basic kit-bash, I've tried keep right shoulder pad bulging. It's one of the last miniatures I painted before a big break indeed.

And finally, the third version of this guy. When I've assembled veterans, I've felt lack of ideas for poses. It's difficult to assemble something new after 23 marines indeed. And I've remembered this nice guy. "If he wouldn't be in veteran squad, it will be my greatest miss in this army!". As soon as the csm-box came, I've assembled his legs, torso, head, backpack... and then realized that the pose has two problems: 1. He must take meltagun in the left hand. 2. His pose is very similar to this guy:

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/6153/img0106640x480a.jpg

but there wasn't any way back. If I would change anything - he wouldn't have something common with the previous except bits he build of. After some thinking, I've changed pose slightly. I hope that this little difference in pose and that he is left-handed distinguish him from the others. So, here he is:

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/346/img0283640x480.jpghttp://img607.imageshack.us/img607/5620/img0282640x480.jpghttp://img848.imageshack.us/img848/2528/img0281640x480.jpg

I understood that just copying all bits will be foolish, because the previous version sucks before any of my Night Lords. So I chose something new and something similar to the previous at the same time, to keep him special. I've added new stuff like augmented left hand and battle knife and modified his right shoulder pad a bit. And also master-crafted meltagun will be a good gift for an old friend ;) I need to finish some gs-work, add some trophies and give him more personality... but I'm pretty happy with this old guy already :) it's really nice to see him back in line.

Because of this guy I've realized that my army has something more than just the inspiration with DtD stuff behind it. And that this army is made by me, and isn't just a copy of his works.

Well... I have also something to speak about :) Can't remember if I said it earlier, but I wanted to change paint-scheme slightly. I really like contrast in miniatures. And also I was amazed with glossy style of paintings, when whole armor was almost black and highlights gives the armor a color. Though I wasn't sure I want shiny Night Lords, so I painted them dark-blue, almost without any highlights. But yet I've risked and tried new recipe for the armor. It'll be really cool if any of you would compare this variant with the old one and say, which looks better. I think myself the new one looks much better though...

So here is the end of this update. ;)

DV

Quick update, progress with my Land Raider and my second Rhino:

Really nice to see old and new side-by-side, and how they were the foundation for what you're doing now. I am the same kind of builder, who tries to remember if I've 'done that pose/load-out before', and make a few intentional variations so no miniature looks exactly the same. But you take it to a whole new, wonderful, level. As always, you make it look so easy, and the results are awesome. Great to see some left hand poses too, it's so uncommon it really adds nicely.

I'm with you and the others, stick with the new paint scheme. It adds a really menacing glow to the armour, without making it too bright. Very nice.

Couple of questions about your greenstuff technique;

Your 'holstered' Chainswords always kick so much ass, seriously. I usually avoid swords and knives on the belt because they usually just look 'glued on', but the leather banding you add makes them feel so plausible. Are you 'wrapping' the sword in a 'ribbon' of greenstuff before adding it to the model or after it's attached? And, do you file and/or shape the back of the weapon to get it sit closer to the model?

Also, what kind of tool are you using to do the corrugated parts in the Power Armour joints? You do some much of it so well, I'd like to know ;)

Finally, the tanks are looking great. I can't wait to see where you go with them. Just love the defiler bits as 'armour hoods' for the weapons, and the modified combi-bolter.

Subtle Discord

Thanks for such a comment ;) Though I think this Land Raider is just my first attempt, like the first csm-squad was. I have some ideas for another already...

Answering the questions:

1. Well I 'wrap' all chainswords after I glue them with the model. 'Wrapping' them before gluing will be much more convenient though, because if a sword is already in place, some parts won't have needed shape or won't be in place at all.

Yes, I cut all unnecessary details which won't be visible in the end or prevent smooth contact between parts.

2. I use model knife  its blade is fine enough for making any type of lines in green stuff.

And a question for you: when will we see your new stuff? I've heard that you decided to convert a Land Raider. It'll be really interesting for me to see how you will place plastic on it :D

Thanks for the information. I should have guessed it was something simple, but now I know for sure.

The Landraider keeps calling to me, (it's partially built) but I haven't even started a plan for it, so it will be awhile. Not sure if I want to go nuts and give it extra armour and a lifting dozer blade, or just lots of crazy trim. Also, I need to finish my second predator first, and I've been working away on its greenstuff gap-filling the last few days. The sponsons are done, the turret is finally in the home stretch, and I'm starting on the hull. It has much more greenstuff work than the first, so it's taking longer.

In general, learning more about resin casting has taken away from my build time, but I've been working on some vehicle bits (Pintol mount Combi-Bolter/Melta anyone?) and some weapon clips and drums for my troops. I've got an update in the works for all that. Once they're done, I'll be back to mostly painting... hopefully. :D Building is great, but without paint it's only half done. But I have some other ideas that I want to build so I can cast them too. *sigh* So many ideas, so little time. :D

Beautiful work on the highlighting, these are going to look amazing once completed! ;)

I hope :) I doubt a little though... we'll see as they will be completed.

"Death from above!"

Yes, I've started my raptor squad :) Well the old models are also cool and look badass, but they are too heavy and have too small smoke-fire-pillar connecting them to bases, so playing them can be dangerous. Also I wish my force be full-converted, so few plastic-conversions was only a matter of time. The inspiration came suddenly yesterday, and I've spent whole evening, searching for some cool stuff like raptor models, drawings, etc. I've also searched for predator, eagles, hawks and demons pictures. Raptors have something common with all this creatures, and I'll try to bring this things together in full squad. Three more stand now, but I will show them later with more progress.

And also I want to show some changes with my Atramentar squad and Command squad (count as 'zerks):

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/1003/img0306640x480.jpghttp://img32.imageshack.us/img32/1305/img0308640x480i.jpg

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3281/img0309800x600.jpg

Nothing interesting really, just magnetized this guys.

And also little surprise :) my brother asked me yesterday evening to give him a marine to assemble. I helped him a little and here is his first model in life. And he isn't THAT happy often. Anyway, he's only 10, so please be gentle ;)

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/3681/img0304640x480.jpghttp://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9904/img0305640x480y.jpg

I gave him a codex and we decided that this one will be Death Guard marine, so I'll show you as my brother paint this :)

Cheers,

DV

Thanks guys for your comments about models :tu: I'm happy that not only I enjoy this miniatures.

Biohazard

Atramentar helmets are pretty simple, nothing special I think. It's just terminator helmets from wolf guard kit with drilled air-filters. I haven't worked with my terminators much, all interesting stuff will be in future. But of course, if you wish to see it - why not? ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

AVE DOMUNIS NOX, ladies and gentlemen! :)

It's been a while since last update. I'm sorry, but I've tried to figure out things at the university - follow Codex Studenticus.

Slow and painful, I'm returning to my force. Ain't done anything really BIG, though there is some minor progress. So here it is:

3 raptors, 1 more.

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/1074/img0331vc.jpg

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/9237/img0333nx.jpghttp://img833.imageshack.us/img833/9954/img0335im.jpghttp://img641.imageshack.us/img641/8739/img0336wv.jpg

I'll try to sculpt a bit and make their armor more aerodynamic and agressive. They are far from the end though, but it'll be interesting to compare 'before' and 'after' versions.

Also minor progress with retinue for Azanael:

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/551/img0338u.jpghttp://img42.imageshack.us/img42/5974/img0339sz.jpg

Another change of concept, another change of models... my fantasy is running low at the moment. I can't figure out bolt-pistols design for this guys - though all other things are clear. Any advices would be helpful.

And painting progress for this plague marine:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9011/img0340iu.jpg

Though it's far from its end, first painting experience for my brother is very impressive ;)

Cheers,

DV
