The Forgotten of Isstvan - Iron Hands - update, 12/4/13

Recommended Posts

Also - new package from FW arrived today - has anyone else had a model in a blister pack like this?

Yep, my tank crew arrived in a similar one, so I think it's FW's new packaging. Makes sense, I suppose.

Interesting, whenever you order a single thing (character/small unit) it arrives in a blister - but bulk orders don't.

I can't see how it's any safer than the old/current transport system, since everything still arrives wrapped in miles of snappy-bubble stuff (it's early in the morning for a student and the actual word escapes me...)

Well, I'm finally home for Easter :ermm: Anyway, more work.

Anyone able to work out who or what this chap is going to be?

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011821.jpg

Someone pointed out my version of Valyund (or is it Vaylund?) Cal isn't 'technically' game legal. So here comes my latest version:

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011817.jpg

Do you think he needs bulking up anymore? For a character who is described as massive, he still looks a little on the tiny side...

And finally - still awaiting parts which FW forgot to send (his hips, crotch and conversion beamer) - the first of my clan's dreadnoughts. Not sure how to pose him - any suggestions?

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011820.jpg

Cheers folks!

Not sure what it was called, but I saw one of the new purple/pinks in GW today and my first thought was "that'd be perfect for pre-heresy ECs." I'll check next time I'm in but I think it was the darkest pink layer.

Finally! Despite the Iron Hand's love of Dreadnought I think this the first Iron Hands Contemptor I've seen on the B&C forums, I can't wait to see it finished, judging by your previous work...

Cheers AGPO, it wouldn't happen to be Xereus or Genestealer purple would it?

Did a bit of tinkering, this is what it looks like so far

It's big! It's purpley-pink! It's killing all my men! It's the Emperor's Children - coming to a drop site massacre near you!

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011806-2.jpg

Thanks very much SanguiniusReborn!

I know what you mean about IH contemptors - I haven't been able to find a photo of an IH contemptor for love nor money!

Well, I hope this (WIP photo) doesn't disappoint

I've tried painting directional plasma lighting on the claw - I've never tried that type of painting before, so I have no idea if it's any good or not. The claw is magnetised at the elbow so I can replace it with any weapons I might buy in the future.

Cheers folks!

Criticism, questions and comments all welcome

Excuse the double post, but I've managed a bit more work on the force.

Firstly - Vaylund Cal - I've painted 2 heads for him, but I'm not sure which is more suitable for him (big, imposing, lots of bionics, servo harness)

I have 2 option - Korvydae's head, or the character conversion head. I honestly don't know which looks better, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

(Please note that the arms are not finished, I just needed them there to see what he'd look like with shoulders)

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011806-3.jpg

On the plus, at least you can clearly see the resculpting I did to his legs.

For those of you who are interested, I based his (and my command squad's techmarine)colour scheme (red shoulders and knees) on the Sons of Medusa techmarines from Imperial Armour 10.

And finally - my dreadnought now has legs!

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011807-1.jpg

Hopefully you can see my attempts at painting running oil and stains from soot on the legs.

I'm looking for criticism and suggestions. (Especially regarding the head!)

Cheers guys :D

I haven't seen that picture, but I'll look out for it, thanks Brother Khairon

Gawain Veteris - I hadn't actually made that connection to be honest! B)

Anyway - look at what Forge World finally delivered today - shooting stick!

They also sent me an entirely new Contemptor, because the origional didn't have any hips/crotch area. This now means I still have a dreadnough without hips... I'm sure I'll find a use for it.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011805-2.jpg

It's magnetised so I can swap it with the claw to change the pose.

And finally, more work on Vaylund - work started on the harness. Criticism and suggestions for Vaylund are needed.

Right, cheers again folks!

Once again, criticism is more than welcome.

Ta very much for the pic Brother Khairon, very useful.

Bit more work - Venerable brother Ferrox. Well, his legs.

I'm not going to mince words, I'm actually pretty happy with the free hand scroll :D First attempt at that kind of thing.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011804-3.jpghttp://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011805-3.jpg

A bit more work on the tactical squads (in all my excitment with the dreadnought, I forgot my army actually needs troops...) I'm still working along on the bases, trying to decide what to do with them.

I wanted to make the squads a little different - so I've placed the checked pattern onto the squad.

Here's a close up of the missile launcher and my attempt at blast marks.

C&C welcome!

Cheers guys ;)

I've only just read through this plog and I must say that I really enjoy the look on your squads! Black is a really hard colour to pull of when you take painting seriously, but you're doing it!

And your freehand stuff is looking great, I salute you courage sir! I seldom dare to try anything like that.

Keep 'em coming!

Thanks guys :)

Didn't know if my highlighting was working on the black or not.

The freehand Iron Hand isn't too hard, it just takes a bit of practice to get it right.

Bit more work done, Ancient Ferrox now has something to stand on -

An EC marine!

Currently work in progress (needs more paint, visible green stuff, the marine probably needs a head...), but I quite like it so far

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011808-2.jpg

And this is the other side of the base -

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011809-1.jpg

Juuuust out of reach, lies this marine's melta gun...

Cheers for looking guys!

C&C is welcome as usual ;)

Do you prime your models or do you just paint right over the plastic? If you prime it, the purple guy would have been a bit more even in his color ( I would suggest a black or white primer depending on how dark you want to go) For the edges I would say either make thinner lines or make a darker mix of grey and highlight with that to dull it down. Other than that the minis are awesome, particularly the "Ivan Vanko" style dude with the whips.

Thanks folks, much appreciated.

gunbabe, do you mean it looks too bright, or too bold? If it's too bright, that's partly my camera's fault, it honestly isn't that bright in real life. If it's too bold/thick - I'm a messy painter! :D Nah, the highlights are far from finished, they won't be too thick in the end.

Terminatorinhell - I do basecoat (with GW spray normally), but with the EC marine, my white primer didn't work properly. It came out blotchy and lumpy, I had thought I'd managed to cover it - evidently not well enough! Until I started painting the 'Ivan Vanko' marine, I'd never painted purple/pink before.

Right, more work.

He's far from finished, but I've reposed Vaylund, as I didn't like the pose I gave him. I think he looks much better now

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011810.jpg

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011809-2.jpg

Need to fix the highlights, finish his base, smooth out some rough edges and a few other things, but I like what I've done so far.

And Ferrox.

I call the base "I'll give you a drop-site massacre!"

Hopefully the pink doesn't look as rough as it used to. I've given it a heavy wash to make it look well worn and damaged.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011806-5.jpg

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011805-4.jpg

As I said earlier, Ferrox's arms are magnetised, allowing me to swap them. Allowing me to put him in this very casual under-arm shooting pose.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011807-3.jpg

I've still got a long way to go on the dreadnought and the base - I've only just started painting his torso! But I thought I'd post this.

C&C welcome, as usual :RTBBB:

Cheers guys!

Hey guys, more work done (although not as much, as I was recently told my eye-sight had fallen, so I need new glasses ¬_¬)

First off, the devastator squad marines are finished - the sergeant isn't.

I put them all in MKIV armour to make them look like the youngest survivors of the Dropsite, being the newest members of the Legion to join the veterans. (None of that Morlock rubbish in my army!)

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011832-1.jpg

Secondly, my Vaylund Cal-count as has recieved an... 'upgrade' of sort. For a character who is meant to be massive, I wasn't happy with his spindly little legs. I think he now looks suitably... 'bulky' Hopefully his legs aren't comically oversized now :P

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/Untitled-1.jpg

And finally - it's big, it's mad, and it's crushing all your marines, it's -

Ancient Brother Ferrox

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011838.jpg

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011837.jpg

His arms are not glued in place - and the same goes for the claw. It can be rotated around, so be either right-handed (in photo) or left handed.

C&C Welcome!

Cheers.

Hello!

I have been lurking around in this thread for a while and I find your work solid! I love you color scheme and choice of armour!

And I think the Standard looks way better with the red added.

But that guy up there...that guy looks awesome! The edge highlighting looks ace! I simply couldn´t hold my opinions to myself anymore

Solid work mate, keep ´em coming. I really enjoy this thread :)

Cheers Doghouse, I really wasn't sure if I'd gone too far with his legs or not. Glad to know it doesn't look silly

Thank you so much! Elspikeo. I'm really happy that you like the dreadnought, and the army so far :D

Well, Ferrox is about to be joined by two brothers, Ferric and Ferrum.

To cut a long story short, when I initially ordered my first contemptor a month ago, I was supplied with 2 contemptors - neither of them had the crotch/hip area, meaning I couldn't build them. FW sent me another (with all the parts), and kindly let me keep the 2 incomplete dreadnoughts.

After a long search on eBay, I found the missing parts. Initially, I was going to make a diorama, and have one dreadnought beating an EmpChildren's dreadnought over the head with it's leg - but, I realised that was a tad silly...

I was at Nottingham with my Dad yesterday, so picked up some more parts for the force - enough to complete the 2 dreads, and create a 5man veteran squad.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011870.jpg

The army managed to get a draw against my dad's SoBs, by turn 6 it was pretty much a stalemate.

I was pleased with Vaylund and my captain - together they managed to punch a landraider into a pile of scrap :D

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/Untitled-2.jpg

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011833.jpg

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/Untitled-3.jpg

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011850.jpg

First squad moves away from the drop site, whilst Second squad splits into combat teams and secures the deployment area

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011837-1.jpg

Ancient Ferrox, supported by techmarine Ullen provides fire support to Sergeant Ajax's devastator squad

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011841.jpg

Iron Commander Bulla, along with his command squad are joined by Forge Wright Vaylund at the drop site.

Bolters spitting and with liberal use of the servo-harness, Cal and Bulla charge headlong into a squad of battle-sisters.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/Untitled-4.jpg

So, that's the army so far, in the field, rather than my work table!

Coming soon - 2 new dreadnoughts and some veterans :D

Cheers folks.

Well, this is going to be my last post for a while, as I've got to return to my student flat tomorrow morning so I can revise for my exams at the end of the month.

So, I thought I might as well try and make it a little interesting...

Although they're only 1/4 done, here is the current status of the second and third dreadnoughts - bringing the army some much needed fire support. Ferric (heavy bolter, left), is based on the art of an IH dreadnought from the Heresy art book (or card game, I can't remember).

C&C Welcome.

Cheers!

Well, I kind of sort of forgot about this topic...

A bit of an update -

A veteran squad. My first attempt at weathering something, I can't quite tell if I've gone over the top or not far enough.

[/url]

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/vet1_zps582324d7.jpg

And finally, WIP of my army's new warlord.

The moment I first saw the Deathshroud, I knew I could make some sort of techmarine/Iron Hands character out of them...

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011950_zpsad0a4d0c.jpg

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011960_zpse441543c.jpg

Also on the books, a four man retinue for the Iron Father, and 15 tactical marines.

Opinions welcome, as always.
Cheers!
