Hey all!

I stumbled over this forum looking for some inspiration for banners and venerable dreads, got sucked into the big 6e threads (that made me aware 6e was a thing...) and decided I'd register to keep thread views in check. Then I decided I should toss up my small contingent of dudes since I recently just about finished them and I'd love some feedback. There are fantastic painters on here.

HQ options, not including a WIP armless power armor Librarian. "Belial" needs a banner. I have parts coming to kitbash up some much better looking claws/hammer/BAMF varieties:

Deathwing squad #1 (Tactical, need to magnetize arms and get a bunch of assault boxes), lead by Veteran Brother-Sergeant Trajan, who will get a banner:

Tactical #5, the in progress, made-of-guys-I-started-painting-when-I-started-40k-in-6th-grade (they've been touched up some). The Plasma Cannoneer is new though:

Devastator #9:

and, for kicks, the small collection of BFG models I picked up just because of how awesome they are. I'd like to play it someday... I also consider these the first models I painted that actually looked somewhat good:

I had a hell of a time getting a picture setup. Most of the photos are a bit too blue while the Devastator picture is much too warm, but average them out and you should get an idea of the colors biggrin.gif I'm second guessing how I've done all the Deathwing, too: it's a flesh wash or Bestial Brown undercoat, with a heavy drybrush of Bleached Bone, then a highlight brush of Skull White. I've never had a great time just painting on BB straight and don't like how GW is doing the robes now but these are coming out, I think, excessively white. I really like how Elmo has said he does them here though, might have to try that.

Cheers!

Welcome to the Rock. Your models are awesome – particularly the ven dreadnought and Deathwing squad ;). The drybrush technique gives the impression of their armour being hewn out of stone or just very ancient. Great to see some DA BFG too, a very rare sight here.

Cheers

I

Welcome Brother Artemid - better still, welcome to the 4th Company ;)

Go for it - but I have to say I really like your take on the Dread and Termi armour :)

You could try a few text lines on the green banners on the Dread and loin cloths on the others - I would suggest watered down white squiggles with a few winged swords to break it up FTW.

Thanks guys! Will get around to the Dread text, was sorta thinking of doing that actually.

Giving a ligher base on this Belial-to-be a shot. I think it looks good, but so do the other guys really. I guess a command squad done like this with the Hitech minis could all have super relic armor.

What do people think? Preference for one style over the other? Do you think they mesh well enough?

And does anyone have suggestions for how to paint his face to super enhance the shadow of the hood, like the other version of this model in the Belial thread (by Priog? I think?) and on the Hitech website? So it mostly looks like a black faceless recess kinda thing. Instead of like Emperor Palpatine as he is now, lol.

Aaaand he's (mostly) done! I haven't decided if I'm doing anything with his left shoulderpad or not, and I need to finish his base, but otherwise, he's ready to rock and roll! Seeing come together was extremely gratifying. I've also magnetized arms for 10 more terminators, a full tactical and full assault set. Waiting on some FW shoulder pads and some upgrade bits atm.

Belial with some termies, his much less impressive SB/PS self, and your average bear Tactical Marine:

The different shades of bone blend together much better than I thought they would, much less concerned now. I'm still going to paint the regular terminators as they're pictured here and leave the yellower color of armor for characters/relic sets (like a very awesome looking command squad).

Most of my army is from 3E days when you couldn't field all Deathwing, IIRC, and if you could I didn't really like the old models so wasn't interested anyway :) (bear in mind I started in middle school, and now have just graduated college). Now that you can, and the plastic Terminator sets are loads better than the old ones IMO, I'm working on shifting to a mostly Deathwing force if possible... though I think I'm mostly going to be playing lower points games so I should keep the boys in Green up to date too. I have a bunch of Veterans boxes I got to make individual robed marines for special/heavy weapon rotations through squads that I'll work on finishing up, but they're a lower priority than getting my Deathwing numbers up ;) so no plans on Company Veterans at this point.

My Path to Redemption vow! 5 new terminators and as many additional magnet arms as I can stand!

And I'm going to just throw these up, too:

thoughts on robe color?

I've been sitting on this color scheme for a while now. I was thinking maybe it could be a BT successor, since that's my favorite other codex, until I had the thought: a crusading DA Successor? Say, a Dark Angels Company or Grand Master who decides that the path to redemption involves zealous crusading in the name of the Emperor (and the Lion) to restore honor and glory to their Chapter? counts-as BT who mostly, but not entirely, eschew the Fallen and mean to make a zealous Emperor-swearing face for the Unforgiven. Total side project, though, I have plenty of Angels to keep me occupied, including a nice collection of 4 scibor/hitech TDA fellows to make a relic command squad to go with my Hitech Belial...

This is as far as I've gotten so far :s

When my hands are shaky that shield is a right :cuss to do! They're getting close to done though. Will be putting in numerous hours on Thursday, those are going to be 40k nights with some buddies I think :D

http://i.imgur.com/KukUd.jpg

Well, those two battle brothers are done (I'll spruce up the bases with grass later)! Have an awful cell picture!

http://i.imgur.com/v2rC0.jpg

Brother 3's body is brushed with bone, so waiting on details and highlights, and the arms have been basecoated brown. More claws.

<3 Forge World Deathwing pads.

Also looking in this thread makes me realize I'm doing LCs when the squad wasn't going to have more LCs, but whatever. Magnets ftw. I don't have enough hammers to give everyone anyway, so something will have to fill in...

And done, for now.

That earlier squad is running all shield/hammer now. I have ten more shield-hammer arm sets to magnetize and paint, to get this squad and my original squad (who need their torsos magnetized) up to speed, and then HQ/Command conversions and Dark Vengeance conversions to do. not to mention I have a Predator I need to sponson magnetize (turret's done, mostly) and three Typhoons I need to paint...

Well done Artemid! I see you have quite a few things in the pipeline - good luck! November is just a few days away and that third pearl has your name on it!

Thanks Semper!

Yep, I have all the bodies and models for my 1750 list (minus a second Pred - borrowing a friend's red-white-bluemobile, dubbed the Ameritank or the Budweisermobile, atm, lol), just gotta catch up with myself and paint them all XD

And I'm going to just throw these up, too:

I like the black robe - with two primary colors already, I think a neutral color is in need and the black feels better than the brown. Second reason, it fits the whole fluffy "...path to redemption involves zealous crusading in the name of the Emperor...". It's black, like death and Chaplains - who are also very zealous in their duties.

You may want to take a look at Arkley's red for this side project.

Yeah, Arkley's project keeps tempting me to put aside my army to fool around with some test marines. I really want to match the Blood Ravens Red color that Relic tossed up, but I'm not quite sure what the closest match of actual paint is. Also, good suggestion on black robes!

Thanks guys! :)

So I had way less work to do on my Chaplain costume (party on Saturday) than I thought, so I borrowed one of my friend's unpainted Marines (he switched to Guard) to test this out:

http://i.imgur.com/iuQ4O.jpg?1

Sorry for the crappy phone pictures, but I think they get the idea across.

Still not totally happy with the red, and it's definitely not shaded properly - I think I would need a bright orange/blood red mix for edges and more Badab in the cracks for the base, or I need to more carefully paint around the black spray. I did not assemble or prime the model, so it's a bit fuzzy.

I went Dheneb Stone base -> Gryphonne Sepia everything -> Bleached Bone -> Dheneb Stone highlights with a little Skull White highlights in a few spots for the bone. The sepia wash doesn't quite get dark enough, I don't think. I guess I could do Scorched Brown like I do for my Deathwing as a base.

Both the Mechrite Red and the Bleached also need to be thinned out a bit, they're just the tiniest bit thick for doing this kind of stuff, unless I can somehow channel a superb Blanchian style of brushstrokes...

so I was looking back through your pictures...and I just now noticed the power swords....

:D I hate you.

....but in a good way. I just dont have the skill to do the awesome tiny details (my hands shake WAAAAAAAY too much to make the squiggly lightning lines).

keep it up...I wants more to ogle!

@Izzuan: But... but... then the lightning will be accurately squiggley!

That first power sword (Sgt. Trajan) was actual blending, but the one on the OOP Termie Cap was actually pretty easy: black, and then just drybrushing various mixes of gray + white up the blade. when you add more white, you start from higher up the blade.

The hammers are all just a dark blue + Ultra blue + white lines roughly on top of eachother.

@Devler: Thanks! Recipie is above, it's real easy.

That first batch of Termies in my first post is not magnetized, but will be; everyone else is.

see...with my shaky hands the right proper squiggly lines turn into blotchy swathes of color ;)

gonna have to try your techniques and see what I can come up with :P

So I TT'd an old axe PA libby I had around as a filler vow for November. Not happy, but don't want to strip him and I probably won't ever field him, so:

http://i.imgur.com/kgP4C.jpg

And now working on this fine lady:

http://i.imgur.com/O1Mae.jpg

Probably going to change the heavy bolter red bits to green, as they're additional armor plates, and then make the actual weapon casings red. I think leaving the red where it is and then making the entire rest of the HB silver would be too much metal. Need to do lenses, more red/red highlights, the front plate detail, tracks to silver, smooth out the bleached bone, checker them up, and do some markings. And then figure out some good weathering - any suggestions?
