Gawain Veteris
Weeell... technically it's a helmet with a 'Sarum' pattern respirator (noted as being a component in MKV suits). In lieu of a proper name, I called it a 'Sarum' pattern helmet. Semantics! I'm making one! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262448-horus-heresy-tutorials-thousand-sons-magistus-amon-160217/page/3/#findComment-3211791 Share on other sites

FeelNoShane
Gawain Veteris First I must say you have inspired me to pursue these extensive conversions for my 30K Iron Warriors I have recently started on this forum. Keep these tutorials coming they are easy to follow and Ill let you know how they are working for me soon. First it's time to go pick up some modeling tools. Once again thanks for the inspiration!! I'll take a hard look at Betrayal, see if I can figure this out... Edit - Found it. One of the Sons of Horus has a Mantilla-pattern respirator, whereas another labelled example called the helmet Sarum-pattern. The one thing that had me tripped up before was an example in the World Eater entry calling the respirator as 'Sarum-type'. So... Mantilla-pattern it is. My bad. <_< Edited October 21, 2012 by Olisredan Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262448-horus-heresy-tutorials-thousand-sons-magistus-amon-160217/page/3/#findComment-3214924 Share on other sites
Antarius
Fantastic thread! I'll probably fork out the dough for FW stuff since I've got way too many thumbs for army-scale GS work but this is a wonderful ressource and presented in an extremely clear and easily "graspable" fashion. A thousand kudos to you, Veteris :D And I'd love to see a take on Night Lord helmets that were less over the top than the current GW version (I somehow don't think they wear wings longer than their legs on their helmets...). Gawain Veteris
Hello, Brothers! Once again sorry it's a day late but without further ado, here is MKIII Veteris style. MKIII Iron Pattern http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1044.jpg One word however on the fact that this is basically an add-on to MKII. The two suits are so similar that it makes more sense to see MKIII not as a mark in it's own right but as an adapted suit of MKII. So when I make reference to the MKII tutorial, it's just because the way you do something is the same as for that one. The backpack for example needs no more info as they use the same one as previously 'tutorialified' ;) Preparation http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1018.jpg http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1019.jpg The praparation stage is more or less the same as MKII with one or two exceptions. These are simply that instead of removing a layer of armour from all the way round the shins and thighs you just remove it from the backs of them. For the torso, those who've been following my tutorials will already know the drill for this stage as you do the same as with the MKIV and MKII by cutting a line across the cleared torso linking it to the backpack. Part 1 http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1020.jpg For the legs you use the same method as described in MKII where you create layered plates by rebuilding the removed armour plate with greenstuff and scoring lines across them. After which you flatten the top or bottom of the line respectively to for the plates for the shins and thighs. However note you should only do this for the back of the MKIII leg plates. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1022.jpg For the torso you should place an appropriately sized blob just below and in the middle of the line you scored in the preparation stage. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1024.jpg Spread this blob across the chest area to form a similar shape to the MKIV tutorial but make sure to have the lower part much wider. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1024.jpg Once you've made the curved T shape you should push the middle of the bottom of the plate up to make a slight alcove, making sure to leave some excess below in order to form the cod piece. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1025.jpg After this you can use the rim making method described in the MKII tutorial to form the rims on the edge of this alcove. The flank plates are optional as you can opt for the MKIV exposed cables instead but they are done in the same way as the MKII aswell. Once this is done you can add additional details. I for example added a gorget and some minor battle-damage. Green stuff is excellent for adding subtle battle damage. Part 2 http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1026.jpg To form the cod piece simply form a square from a blob of green stuff and use the above rim making method on the lower edge. (you should do this at about the same time as you do your shin and leg fronts as this will allow you to adapt the shape according to pose restrictions. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1027.jpg I may be sounding like a stuck record here but the leg front plates simply use the rim making method aswell! place a blob on each of the fronts (ideally once the backs of the legs are set) and then spread each across the plate, being careful to square off the edges in the tidying stage. Use the rim making method to form the trim at the top and bottom of each plate (accommodating the cod piece where necessary). The wrist guards are achieved in much the same way but the photos of the one I did don't seem to have made it onto the computed :S I'll be sure to stick them to an edit. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1029.jpg For the knee pads and toe caps add small blobs to the... you guessed it, knees and toes (not shoulders) http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1030.jpg Then simply smooth these over the area into circles for the knees and to wrap around the toe area for the toe. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1039.jpg For the shoulder plate rims just repeat the MKII shoulder plates and once the lower layer is set add a thicker sausage across the top, taking care to leave space from about the middle to the corners of the rim. Repeat the process used to create the MKII shoulder pad rims, just on a larger scale. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1040.jpg A sneaky tip for this is to (and trust me on this) lick the thumb of the hand you're using to hold the shoulder pad, and place it against the back of the rim. This will allow you to push the rim up and make it taller without it sticking to your hand. Add bolts where desired. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1033.jpg Finally the helmet (which is IMO the easiest part). Once prepared in the same way as MKII place a blob on the smoothed down face plate and spread it across into a very rough triangle shape (like a knight's helmet).Gradually tidy this up by applying a little pressure to one side of the central ridge or the other with the flat edge of your tool. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1034.jpg Once you have a cleaner triangle shape score a line across the top of it. This will form the 'crown' type plate. Gently push the plate just below this line down with the flat of your tool to separate the crown from the face plate. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1036.jpg Add the eyes by poking the area either side of the middle ridge (making sure to leave some green stuff between the eyes, unlike the MKII which is one visor). After this add whatever details you like (eg. Vents, holes, crosses) The story so far http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/DSCN1043.jpg So there we have it  Hope you find this useful. This one was down to the wire too haha MKV is next, followed by MKI GV Edited October 28, 2012 by Gawain Veteris Ursa Doom 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262448-horus-heresy-tutorials-thousand-sons-magistus-amon-160217/page/3/#findComment-3222602 Share on other sites

Gawain Veteris
Just gonna go through a few questions which seem to be stacking up on this thread :P Olisredan and Carnosaur93: MkVIII would be interesting to have a go at but perhaps not on this thread as It's my aim to get through the Heresy Era :P Also, Greyknights are always good for MKVIII IMO. Also, Olisredan with regards to the Mntilla/ Sarum Pattern respirators, they look a lot like MKV. Not sure if they're the same but if they are I hope you're looking forward to next week's installment :) Antaris: My plan for Nightlords helmets is similar to the command squad of Calgar where the wings will be sweeping back from their visors :) Jolemai: The process for making these is designed to be condusive to the 'batch' or conveyor belt methods. You have say five guys and do each stage for them all at the same time. So for five MKIV for example I reckon it'd take two hours. furiosoprime: What is 'stickying'? :P Is that like when it goes on the librarium or something? Circusnurgling: My god man! :P Well I'll certainly look into it. My Raptors to Heresy era tutorial is in the pipe line ;) Finally, can't remember who asked but it was something to do with grey primer? I've never used it. Would you guys reccomend it? Thanks very much for the interest. MKV on Saturday 3rd November GV Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262448-horus-heresy-tutorials-thousand-sons-magistus-amon-160217/page/3/#findComment-3223056 Share on other sites
