Ultramarines 1st Company project

Hmm, what does the Codex say?! I think the difficulty with painting his armour in camo is keeping the association with the rest of the force. I agree that it would make more sense in a tactical respect, but what soldiers would truly go to war in bright blue (or yellow) armour, unless camouflage was not one of their interests... I'd love to see a demo version of what a camo ultramarine scheme might look like. With regards to the cloak, it's potentially part of a "cloaking device" - maybe his armour changes colour or bends the light around in a predator style...

Just my two cents.

There is canon precedent for space marines painting their armor camouflage. The best example of this that comes to mind is that old picture GW made of the Badab War participants. If you do a google image search for "Badab War camouflage" you'll see it. There were also similar pictures in the old Rogue Trader book and I think maybe in 2nd Ed but they definitely started to phase it out in favor of just showing the standard chapter colors paintjobs as the game grew. I'm not sure how the Ultramarines in particular would feel about using camo power armor but I don't think their fluff would rule it out. Just make sure that you leave the chapter markings, either as a complete shoulder pad or just a badge.

Thanks Guys

Im tempted to just paint them red and trim them in white and make them more ceremonial but then the back packs wouldnt tie in

Fluff wise (and this thread is definitely not about fluff) in Courage and Honour the marines go off in full plate with only camo cloaks as they push into Tau territory. Then again in Fall of Damnos they just seem to wander around in full plate scoping out what the necrons are doing.

I dont know if I should just pull this set out of the 1st company and paint them up separately. Ive a set of sternguard on order which should be here next week so thats going to grab my focus

Well the sternguard squad arrived on Friday so Ive found some time to start the first one.

Ive managed to build 12 sternguards out of the one box and Ive still got biz left. Its a fantastic kit.

Heres proof the seal and aquila were done prior to assembly. The grav guns going on tonight so I'll never see it again!

Damn you, you're making it difficult to resist getting the new Stern box... Great job on the classic helmet and the robes, your 1st Company are going to look fantastic on the table. When will we get to see such an auspicious day?

I dont play any more so this probably wont hit the table.

What I am thinking about doing is an armies on parade next year with my 1st company (possibly mcragge)

Buy the kit though, its awesome

Heres the first one done apart from the base and back pack.

Im having real trouble getting a decent picture. The whites and golds are washing out. I think I need a light box to do these justice.

beautiful job as per the norm for you dude, what color scheme are you using for the grav?

Do you mean the green?

Its Iyanden darksun highlighted with sunburst yellow then finally highlighted with white.

I then washed it all in a mix of medium and dark angel green. I repeated this a few times until it looked ok.

honestly that work there is a great....the new special weapon there is well done indeed...and that fact that the sternguard kit seems to be as good as the old Dark Angel upgrade kit and Black Templar upgrade kit when it comes to lasting awhile makes it awesome indeed

That's a shame, but perhaps for the best. Any opponent seeing such mighty sons of Guilliman placed on the table opposite him would resign the game immediately in full knowledge that the dice gods would show him no favour...

That method for grav sounds pretty easy and looks great, I think I'll give it a go for mine :)

Now onto number two

The Alan Sugar of Space marines issuing the "You're fired" command

I need to clean up the base and weather it in and I managed to wreak the scroll on the leg but that should all be fixed tonight.

Might I ask for the recipe you used for the Sternguard loincloth/tabard things? Love the depth of shade you've got going there. The aforementioned grav gun is very well done as well, and your blue really pops. Bravo!

Thanks

Its pretty Simple

Its Steel legion Drab base

Washed with Agrax Earthshade

Then various blends of Steel legion drab + what was bleached bone mixed with medium

This is right up to a final white highlight.

Its a lot starker than the marines on the front of the box but I think it looks better from a distance.

Anyway onto an update. Ive had a few real life things that got in the way but this weekend I caught up on Breaking Bad and got 5 hours in

Heres my sergeant. Ive jsut read Rynns World and the sergent in there had a deathwatch pad that was still in silver as he had rejoined the Fists.

Ive basically followed this for my sergeant. The sword and hilt all need finishing but you get the idea.

And heres the next one

Ive convertedhttp://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/IMG_0431_zps2f5f6c21.jpg the had to swap the gun arm then used a GK sword on him. I think its nice and dynamic

Ive got the next two finished (top right) but running true to form something else has come along and caught my eye

Well that was a long tea break!

I havent been near my brushes for about 2 months thanks to work/family/christmas etc etc

So this weekend I made myself paint something. I stuck breaking bad S03 on and started painting.

Heres the result. The bolter, gold and base need finishing and I can see I need to clean some highlights. Im fairly happy with it and Im glad to say Ive found my painting mojo again..... expect to see some minis cranked out in the next month (at one per week :) )
